This is the "off year" update (second year of the same model design). It's more akin to a new coat of paint or the insertion of a slightly higher performance motor in a car than it is a whole new design.
Just out of interest - do you consider the physical design of the tablet upgrade between the iPad 1 and iPad 2, significant. It is slightly thinner and lighter but essentially the same. Same size screen, bezel, aluminum case...
I would consider it significant but I can see why someone wouldn't.
. . . I think it's a bit of a stretch to call this a "significant update." . . .
Or not enough of a stretch, maybe. It will be the first real iPad.
What an all-screen computer that you hold in your hands should really look like.
People will become deeply involved with that screen. It will change photography. Movies will be made, books will be written and illustrated, to take advantage of it. It will change everything, as someone said here awhile ago, again.

Why should there be always a new design? I look at my iPad 2 or my iPhone 4 and still think wow they really did this perfect. Jonny Ive is for me a hero. He together with Steve brought consumer electronic design to a level that is unprecedented. Its long lasting, and doesn't have to change every year. Like that they can put more emphasis on what lies within. An other advantage is, that they can cut costs and let their design departments focus on new products.
While I think they are right about the sales and will certainly buy one myself at the earliest opportunity, I think it's a bit of a stretch to call this a "significant update."
It will look almost identical to the second generation version. It will be slightly faster and have a sharper screen.
Lots of heavy action going on right now with Apple's stock:
Hold tight for the inevitable profit taking dip. Only question is will it occur just before or just after Wednesday's presentation? No worries though it will be back up within weeks.
Same old same old with a better CPU = not significant.
Well we know by the invitation that the display has changed and it only makes sense to double the display so it's not crazy to assume the display is "retina". But yeah, I'm personally looking for 1GB RAM + Quad core. The display will need to be accompanied by such changes or it will slow down the device and the last thing I want is the iPad 3 to be more sluggish than iPad 2.
When I hear fanboys arguing for dual quad it actually angers me on a personal level.
I just hope you guys across the atlantic do some nice shopping, to kick the USD out of it's plummeting course. Every excitement about APPL gets a bit flattened by the diving USD exchange.
No luck. Only Drachma and Desutchmark can prop U.S. Dollar up now.

Or just some big investors want lots of cash in a hurry. They do that every morning now; $2-3 dip every morning then turns green again. So when Renaissance, Agrilcourt, Vanguard or whathaveyou want a billion or more that very morning and you retail investors guys canot keep up with margin calls?

You forgot the sarcasm tag.

Please keep posting this. I LOL every time I see it!
I agree. Certainly won't be 'significant' enough to satisfy the whiners.
"why doesn't it slice and dice???" , "Apple are doomed" etc
Brace yourselves, I can smell the unwarranted disappointment already.
LTE
Retina Display
Quad core chip
1 Gig RAM
Siri
All together = significant.
Same old same old with a better CPU = not significant.
It just gets funnier every time!
Actually it gets less funny.
When was the last time desktops or laptops received such a significant upgrade?
Probably when Wintel went from the '386 to the '486.

Lots of people said the same thing about the original iPhone.
Imagine the software possibilities!
Hardware is just an enabler for great software.
And text in Pages will look like print. The fonts will be gorgeous.
Keynote presentations will be just incredible.
iBooks will look like you're reading a real book, the resolution will be so high.
