OK since you don't have the new iPad how do you know it will look thicker and feel heavier when you get it in your hands? I could care less if a spec sheet shows it's slightly thicker or weighs a little bit more. It's all about how it feels when you're holding it in your hands. My guess is it won't even be noticeable for most people.
The word from those at the event that handled it say it doesn't really feel any thicker than the iPad 2 but you can tell the weight difference going from one to the other. However, when compared to the original iPad it feels and is lighter than the new iPad.
So it's not "better" because it's thicker and heavier?
JIC you are being serious let's look at what they did to the overall product. That added 4x the number of pixels to the display without losing battery life. The only solution that would work to keep it lighter and thinner is to reduce the battery size to a point that it has to changed much more often and can't go a full day of use. Is that really "better" to you?
PS: The iPhones have gotten both thicker and heavier in YoY releases.
Apple is working within the confines of battery technology. My guess is the #1 goal for this iPad was to have retina display with the same battery life. If that meant it has to be every so slightly thinker/heavier than so be it. I'm sure most people would find that an acceptable compromise. And I'm sure if Apple could have made this iPad even thinner and lighter than iPad 2 with all the new features it has they would have.

I think that is the most logical answer. I had said long before this was announced that I'll take a heavier and larger device (and even pay more money) to get the Retina Display sooner rather than later.
What a ridiculous, ridiculous analogy. The similarity of those 2 phones is analogous that cars have tires and wheels? How many phones looked like that before the iPhone?
Not a "ridiculous" analogy. I'd say its the perfect analogy. Every car has tires, steering wheels, 4 doors, etc. They all look "similar" like you've said. Yet, they dont sue each other for "copying" each other.
