I can understand Laurene wanting to finish the project if it's something she wanted herself but if it is because of what Steve wanted, there's little sense in having a boat without a captain.

You didn't think that Steve was going to be the "captain" did you? He would have hired a whole freaking crew (probably the best money could buy, according to his reputation) and relaxed on his yacht with the family.

Life goes on, and I'm sure Mrs. Jobs would find a way to have fun on her yacht with family and friends all around her... even though she misses Steve.

Appalling ostentation. All that money could be going to help others. Instead, Jobs, and now his widow, prefer to wallow in it. I hope it hits an iceberg and sinks.

How about you give with your own money instead of pretending you have the ability to tell others how to spend theirs. There's really nothing else to say in this argument.

You mean paid for by Apple and given to Steve Jobs as a bonus in December 1999 and now owned by Mrs. Jobs.

$90 million was charged as "executive bonus" for the quarter.

Steve was reimbursed for fuel/travel expenses when he used it for official Apple business but it was his personal property.

I'm guessing that Mrs. Jobs leases it back to Apple for Tim Cook and others to jet around when needed.

From the February 2000 10-Q for AAPL

    "EXECUTIVE BONUS

In December 1999, the Company's Board of Directors approved a special executive bonus for past services for the Company's Chief Executive Officer in the form of an aircraft with a total cost to the company of approximately $90 million, the majority of which is not tax deductible. Approximately half of the total charge is the cost of the aircraft. The other half represents all other costs and taxes associated with the purchase."

Man, screw houses. Why have a single location when you could have this yacht and go to anywhere in the world you wanted?

Steve Jobs did spend his money on helping people. He funded millions of dollars into cancer research and his wife still does as well.

Why pour all that money away and not enjoy some of it yourself?

Hell, if Mrs Jobs doesn't want the boat I can guarantee that someone will buy it off her because it was Steve Job's boat.

That thing is sweet but I hope it's strong enough to handle the smashing of the wine bottle.

Yeah, I didn't mean he'd literally be the captain. This seemed like Steve's idea and could easily have been a way for him to ensure he spent more time with his family. If that was the intention, the feeling of being aboard that yacht without him would be incredibly depressing, especially considering he didn't even get to see it finished.

It was probably the only way to word it to avoid people narrowing it down quickly. Like when Steve said Apple had a 'product transition' when he meant stepping down for Tim to take over. It could also have been a misinterpretation. It was a French radio interview and he may have only mentioned that he met with Steve and there was secrecy and then people assumed he meant Apple.

Maybe but they were married for 21 years. Waking up next to someone for 21 years and then have that change suddenly must leave a void that even the biggest yacht in the world can't fill. If it was me personally, I think I'd feel much worse with that particular yacht but then again, there might be some innovative technology on board that the world should see...

    ...like an Apple television set.

Thing is, the alternative is that all the money stays in digital accounts that can increase or decrease in value. Most of it is in Disney stock. It's probably wise to use a lot of it on physical assets no matter what they are.

I've seen people mentioning that. That's not his yacht, is it? I thought that was just A yacht the company made.

Not even that. It is a picture of a concept.

Jobs didn't design anything by himself, but he was actively involved in the design of every Apple product developed during his time as CEO.
