Purported next-gen iPhone home button has modified design
A new component from the Far East is claimed to be a home button from Apple's sixth-generation iPhone, featuring a new, modified design.
The iPhone home buttons remain circular, but underneath the button they are attached to a more squared-off plastic piece. The black and white parts, advertised as a "home button key" for Apple's "iPhone 5," were discovered on Monday by AppleBitch.
While the purported iPhone parts suggest the next-generation device's home button will look largely the same as it always has, they also indicate that the component will be redesigned internally. That could support speculation that the next iPhone will be a redesigned model with an appearance different from the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.
The original listing for the new iPhone home buttons at TVC-Mall.com notes that the design is different from the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4, with the round button in the center accompanied by a more square piece outside of it. It also noted that the black and white versions of the home button are identical.
The parts, if legitimate, suggest Apple is working on prototype models of its next-generation iPhone. In March it was said that Apple was reviewing potential components for the new iPhone, which is expected to be released this fall, one year after the iPhone 4S.
Rumors surrounding the next iPhone have picked up steam in recent weeks, as one report said the handset will feature Qualcomm's "MDM9615" LTE 4G chip for high-speed wireless connectivity. Reports have also claimed that the next iPhone will adopt in-cell touch panel technology, which will allow Apple to make the next iPhone thinner by 0.44 millimeters, or fit in a larger battery.
It has also been rumored that the next iPhone will have a metal back, replacing the glass back panel that has been utilized with the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4. The alleged metal chassis has been compared to the aluminum backs Apple has created for the iPad.

On topic though, I have found that the home buttons have always been temperamental after time, sometimes working and sometimes not.

I took my 3GS apart once to clean the glass & accidentally caught one of the little metal pins with the cleaning rag, buuuuummer. The internal parts are extremely fragile, in my opinion unnecessarily so. As 1 of 4 buttons on the phone and the most frequently used it ought to be extremely sturdy.

The phone is sturdy, as is the home button. Must have pressed mine hundreds of thousands of times in the 2.5 yrs I've owned my iPhone 4 and it still works like when I bought it. Apple's target audience isn't people who take apart their phones and in doing so damage internal components, so it's pretty irrelevant.

The phone isn't designed for maintenance by clumsy people.

I can't help but wonder is this is legit, does the home button have a multi function beyond what it does now? Will the iPhone 5 have a sensitive home button for muti gestures?

I haven't used the home button for about 3 months and I'm loving it. All my actions are done with gestures via the Activator app (requires a JB). I don't see why this isn't possible for Apple to do on the new iPhone if people have been doing this for a long time already via JB. I'm sure Steve intended for it to be done with as well. The home button defeats the whole purpose of the technology.

Because it is, and has been possible since iOS 4.2, stock, no jailbreak.

What are you talking about. A stock iPhone needs the home button. That's why it has the home button. You cannot get to home with many apps without clicking the home button.
You're not talking about those accessibility options are you? Cause they're very different.
The home button has a few uses that aren't covered by the multitouch gestures. For example, when you hold the homescreen icons to go into edit mode, you pretty much have to press the home button to get out of that mode.
Without Activator you cannot do away with the home button 100%. It just isn't possible.
