Amazon has reportedly begun pitching to advertising agencies the opportunity to advertise on the welcome screen of its Kindle Fire tablet for a price of $600,000.
Another reason I will not be buying a Fire. And I suspect others will feel the same
Reports have suggested that Amazon plans to launch a larger Kindle Fire with a 10.1-inch display later this year that would more directly compete with Apple's 9.7-inch iPad. The new, larger Kindle Fire is believed to be in development under the code name "Coyote."
now this makes way way more sense than the rumors that Apple would make a smaller iPad to compete with the Fire which hasn't yet made a dent in their 9.7 inch model sales.
And now I sit back and wait for someone to link me to those patents of Apple's regarding advertising within the OS. News flash: they're not being used! And I wouldn't be surprised if Apple patented them simply so Google and Friends would either have to pay Apple to do that or so they couldn't at all.
I forgot about those patents. Can't wait for Amazon to try this and Apple to pull out those patents and sue for infringement saying that the patent isn't specific to computers but would include Android etc.
Aha! Just like I said before - it's more than just about making up for losses in hardware with contents sales.
No that's still more or less what it is. Trouble is that most of that content is selling for pennies also. if anything. It doesn't help that Amazon has that whole Prime program where you get hella discounts on titles even to the point of being able to read some of them for free and/or share them with friends. Plus they don't make that much off what books you do buy, especially older titles the publishers put up at mass market prices (i.e. 5.99-7.99) and so on.
so basically they are trying to make up the losses with content sales and failing. But either there is no system for in app ads or Amazon didn't cut themselves in on that with the developers (or can't) so this is their great idea to try to make up some of the missing money. If they can get the other side to buy in, which they probably won't at the alleged price since they can't promise any kind of numbers.
Wow! Seriously? It is sickening. It seems that everything is AD driven these days. Next thing you know, Charmin will start selling ad space on every sheet of toilet paper.
oh that is a great thought. I would love to wipe my butt with some of the lame ads that are out there.
Apple constantly mentions how many credit cards they have on file and how people use them to purchase items through their iOS devices. How is that any different? Apple even mandates use of their store so they get their 30% cut.
Actually they don't. You just can't link to your outside store inside of your iOS apps
No, all iOS devices are limited to being POS terminals only for Apple.
Again, not true. You can totally use an iOS device for a POS for something other than Apple. THey even promote other companies using their hardware for this. don't confuse using that hardware with using their store and their collection of credit cards. Not the same thing.

Indeed you can't keep devaluing your product, because you train people to do the same. And it becomes a vicious cycle.
I guess that's the future of software, isn't it? Apple's model, where you get the software, and Google/Amazon's model where they whore themselves out to advertisers in an attempt to drop prices to compete with Apple.
