I'm sick of all these rumors.  We don't know whether it's the real thing, fake or a prototype part that will never get released.  Just the other night at D10 Tim Cook commented on Apple not being fragmented, so it makes ZERO sense that the new iPhone would change aspect ratio to 16:9.  Sorry but I'm not buying it.

Going forward Apple can finally have two standard aspects for its iOS devices: 3:2 (iPad) and 16:9 (iPhone, iPod, iTV).

    iPad is 4:3.

This is definitely fake.  Why would Apple increase the size of the blank spots on the top and bottom of the phone?  Even if they decide to increase the screen size they wouldn't make the blank parts so large as they can already fit current components into a smaller area.

I'm convinced the new phone display will be larger (thankfully). I am also convinced the most logical way to do it is to keep the PPI the same and extend the number of pixels on one axis by 176 to make 1136x960 display. This will allow the most minimal impact to uses and devs.

Gruber stated he doesnt think Apple will increase the case size. I think Apple would ideally not want to increase the size but with a larger backlight, more pixels, LTE, and potentially other new HW that might not be possible. Gruber has also stated that Android phone had gotten so big because of LTE which I think could very well affect the case size despite likely getting 3rd-gen LTE tech.

In the end it will be what it will be and I trust Apple to balance size, weight, features, performance and battery life well as they successfully has done many, many times before, which is not something I can say for other vendors.

If they stretch it like this I won't be buying it. I want a wider phone of the same proportions. I bet plenty of people think the same.

I expect the new iphone to be bigger too, just not 16:9.  Why in the world would they make it taller but not wider?  How does that improve the viewing quality at all?  No I don't want some stupid a** Galaxy Note size phone but if they're going to make it bigger at least do it proportionally.

yes. 16:9 is just weird, only good for lcd tv's but not a phone! i agree w/ making it bigger by a few centimeters wide, not stretch it taller just looks weird to me.

Apple could reasonably recover 4mm width based on the current design. They likely cannot recover 5mm vertically from the current design to keep the proportions case size the same and the screen ratio the same. So, extending the case 5mm leaves them at a 3.7" screen. To get a 4" screen, they need to extend the case about 14mm. This would leave them at about 60% screen coverage.

Screen coverage area necessarily improves as you use a larger screen. Your "parasitic" parts drop off. If they were to do significant re-design of the phone's arrangement, it is possible they could drop the length by 5mm, but the leaked images don't seem to support that.

The widest they can go is likely the width of the iPod classic, which would add about 5mm, and let them reduce the added length a bit.

If they do release this brilliant design it can double up as a tv remote. LG tried doing it, but apple will get it right. Think different. Think taller. Use that phone as a remote.

No one wants a TV remote for a phone.  Unless these "leaks" we're seeing are not for the new iPhone but are for a new TV remote?  If they were changing the iPhone to 16:9 wouldn't that fact come out during WWDC?  Wouldn't app developers have to be made aware?

Why would a TV remote need a dock connector, speakers, a mic, a FaceTime camera, and to be a quarter of an inch thick?

Nah, the new long design was inspired by the Lost series:

    iPad is 4:3.

Here come the cries of "video iPod" and whatever else.

My mistake about the iPad aspect ratio. I know that it's 4:3 quite well (I'm a filmmaker) but must have brain farted and thought of the iPhone instead (current iPhones are 3:2)

Regardless, my aspect error doesn't affect my point.

As for a pressing need. Yes there is a pressing need for a 16:9 iPhone. Unlike the iPad, which works much better as a 4:3 device (most iPad apps orient in both landscape and portrait better with a less wide aspect, and the screen is large enough to consume widescreen letterboxed content), the iPhone would work perfectly fine as a widescreen device since the majority of its use is in portrait mode, and it would allow video consumption (most of which is 16:9) to be viewed larger; a big deal for a handset.

Finally the massive array of widescreen android handsets have proven that 16:9 works rather nicely for a phone (although rather poorly for a tablet).

So I'm fairly certain the iPhone will go 16:9. And personally am looking forward to it.
