$499 is a silly price to quote in an NYT article. That's like saying the the noon temperature tomorrow will be somewhere less than 100C.
The data so far leans toward $249. $199 if Apple wants to take a 'loss' (less than 30% profit, loss only in stock price), but they want to effectively 'kill' the new Amazon equipment before they are launched, and seriously keep the Nexus a 'boutique' device vs mainstream. I guess it's all up to Apple and how 'thermonuclear' they feel at the pricing meeting.
$299 is an outside price, and I think it depends too much on the 'app cachet' of the iPad brand, which I think overrated. People buy on price... people retain on apps (ecosystem). If someone tells you 'you need an 7-8" tablet' unless they say 'because it has app X and that's only available on this platform' and they are someone who you value their opinion, You may buy... but I think most of this is the general, 'buy an iPad... you can't go wrong... look, they have one now priced at $299.'
I really hope it's $299. Otherwise I don't see any reason to get it over the Nexus 7 if you're looking at tablets that same size.
Hopefully it will also have the same storage options as the ipad.
People will buy it because it's an iPad. Which means real tablet optimized Apps. An ecosystem where customers outside of the US also have a substantial media collection to browse. A huge selection of aftermarket accessories and cases. And even my local 7-11 sells iTunes gift cards. Where do you find Google Play gift cards.
Google has a long way to go to match the complete ecosystem that Apple and all the third party manufacturers provide.
Why can't terrible ideas just stay terrible ideas?
Why is it that it's a terrible idea? Just because you don't like it?
A lot of people here have expressed the opinion that they like it - and quite a few have even said that they'd buy one. Just because it might not suit your needs doesn't make it a terrible idea.
I still think if such device exists it will be an updated iPod Touch.
Not a chance. iPods are small, portable media players. Even though the Touch plays games, etc, its primary function is as a media player. iPads are much more general purpose computing devices - and an 8" iPad would be far closer to a 10" iPad than to an 3.5" Touch.
Plus, of course, the iPad name is a far stronger marketing brand today.

The NYT said ""significantly less than the latest $499 iPad"", not "$499".
No way in the world would Apple sell it at $199. That would send the message that they don't think it's any better than the crapware 7" tablets out there - and would simply ignite a price war. Furthermore, Apple is not going to sell it at a loss, nor are they going to compete with Fire and Nexus on price.
Well if it's not a larger iPod Touch then I'm not convinced the rumors are accurate. Most of these rumors are based the media and wall street analysts predicting the Kindle Fire or some other device being an "iPad killer" and that Apple needs to respond with a smaller and cheaper device. Google comes out with a 7" tablet and sure enough the media starts up the rumors of a smaller iPad. They created a meme and are now pushing rumors to back up that meme.
Google and Amazon aren't in it to make money off hardware so they can compete in a race to the bottom. Apple is all about making money off hardware and aren't into competing in the cheap space. When Apple does something it's because they think they can do it better than someone else, not because they're trying to compete on price or for market share. Unless Apple has a blow away device that makes the Nexus 7 look like a cheap toy I don't see them releasing anything. And after having a retina display on my iPhone 4s and iPad I would never go back to a non-retina display.

4G LTE version? Hm..., it's gonna be pricey for Apple having to license gazilions of 4G LTE patents of which Apple has none [thankfully they bought Nortel's 4G LTE patent portfolio totalled to just about 152 patents]. Android partnership smells blod with their over 30% patents in 4G LTE technology. Qualcomm is happy as an owner of about 710 4G LTE patents because Apple will be forced to use Qualcomm's 4G LTE chip. So happy will be Nokia who already won patent infringement case against Apple who now has to cough up license fees to Nokia. LIfe is rosy indeed for Apple when they embrace 4G LTE fully, and hopefully this time Apple ain't gonna be idiotic enough to sell its gadgets labelled 4G LTE but with wrong bands as they'd done with their IPad 3 in Australia and EU. Congratulations to all REAL patent owners for now, finally, they start collecting some serious change out of Apple so-called "deep pocket".
what ever it is it will crush Google's N7 and Kindle fire in one mighty blow. Just imagine the accessories! Game over for the competition.
What most people don't realize is that the so-called "iPad mini" will be available in many countries soon after launch. How many countries will N7 and Kindle be available in?
Not a chance. iPods are small, portable media players. Even though the Touch plays games, etc, its primary function is as a media player. iPads are much more general purpose computing devices - and an 8" iPad would be far closer to a 10" iPad than to an 3.5" Touch.
. I'm not convinced that this rumored device will be that big. To me it makes no sense to have an 8" and 10" iPad. I can see them making the iPhone and iPod Touch bigger. But if they do make a smaller iPad i think they'll only do it if it blows away the competition with retina display or some other killer feature/look. Personally there's no WTA I'd purchase an 8" iPad if it didn't have a retina display.
The Tech section of the NYT has never been very different from other tech sites.
The 7 inch market hasn't work. The Fire dropped dead after the holidays. ArsTechnica predicted that's exactly what would happen. the Nexus and Surface is not even out yet. Tech sites keep using the word competition when there hasn't been any. 5 inch might work. After using an iPhone for a few years, I am feeling claustrophobic. My cousin and coworker have 5 inch androids, its not too big. Maybe a 5 inch Touch will set itself apart from the iPhone and keep competitors from getting a toe in the tablet space. Like how the low price Shuffle, Nano did for music players.
If Apple sells it at $199, they can easily destroy the competition's 7 inch tablets and therefore limit the expansion of their ecosystem. It is all bout encroaching on the competition's ecosystem. As long as their ecosystem is destroyed, fewer will buy their phones and tablets.
If Apple sell it at $199, they can easily destroy the competition's 7 inch tablets and therefore limit the expansion of their ecosystem.
Google said they're making little to no profit on the Nexus 7. Some speculated that Amazon was selling the Kindle Fire at a loss. What type of device could Apple profitably sell at $199 that would destroy the competition?
Why can't terrible ideas just stay terrible ideas?
Because there is nothing terrible about it. This is a size that will be very useful to a number of users. Further it could be especially big in business where it would effectively replace Daytimer type organizers.
I think it really unlikely that this will be the case. An iPod touch serves the same functions as an iPhone. It's primarily a game playing device, and it's a great iPod for music and movies. It would not improve it as a game playing device to be almost as big as an iPad, it would make it worse. And it would basically ruin the iPod function.
Not really. Sure it is good for music, games and so forth but you would be surprised at the traction iPod Touch has in business. I know of dozens of people that use a Touch for their pocketable business needs.
Touch is a really neat solution for many users and uses. You get the same basic capability of an iPhone without the extra expense of the cell service.
I would expect that the new iPod touch will follow the same format as the new iPhone (16:9 ratio) because changing the ratio there actually does improve the device for playing games and using the iPod functions. I also expect the new iPad will be 4:3 like the current one and have the same side bezels as well.
This I agree with. The wider aspect ratio is much more suited to devices that go in your pocket.
The picture that accompanies this article strikes me as one of the least likely to be true "leaks" we've seen so far as well. The device shown is too narrow for it to be anything other than 16:9 (assuming it has the same bezels as the iPad), or maybe 4:3 with no side bezels at all, like a giant iPhone. It's possible I suppose, but it doesn't strike me as very likely that the new iPad mini will be designed either of those ways.
The fact that it's obviously been printed out of a 3D printer makes it completely possible that this is either a hoax, or wishful thinking in that it's an iPad mini that looks more like a typical Android tablet.
Any respectable R&D organization these days makes use of 3D printers. The fact that this is a "print" means nothing. Of course it is possible this is a hoax, just like many of the other so called leaks but it does seem like we have many vectors pointing in the same direction.

There is no need for Apple to take a "loss" on anything it sells. For the most part it is bad business and frankly is why companies like Dell and HP are in such bad shape. Profits are what allow you to grow a company and innovate, razor thin margins make for rather dull hardware.
$299 is an outside price, and I think it depends too much on the 'app cachet' of the iPad brand, which I think overrated.
Apps are the life blood of the iOS devices, you underestimate there importance and place your credibility at risk. Without apps I'd have very little use for most of my iOS devices.
People buy on price... people retain on apps (ecosystem).
Some things yes, price is a driver. That however is seldom the case for Apple hardware.
If someone tells you 'you need an 7-8" tablet' unless they say 'because it has app X and that's only available on this platform' and they are someone who you value their opinion, You may buy... but I think most of this is the general, 'buy an iPad... you can't go wrong... look, they have one now priced at $299.'
I once had a long talk with a business man about the customer that wants some and one that needs something. In this conversation it was about lawn mowers. If you need a lawn mower you might be looking for the cheapest push mower you can find as a customer. If however you want a fancy riding lawn mower / tractor you may not be looking for cheap. this is why push mowers are big items at discounters, hardware stores and the like where margins might be thin. Fancy lawn mowers or tractors are often sold at independent business where the margins are thicker to support that business. These businesses can survive because there is a huge difference between a customer that wants as opposed to one that needs.
So what does this have to do with Apple? Simple, people "want" Apple devices and are not going to let a bit of profit on Apples part bother them.
4G LTE version? Hm..., it's gonna be pricey for Apple having to license gazilions of 4G LTE patents of which Apple has none.
It will be far pricier for Apple's so-called "competition", since Apple's UI patents were never contributed to standards bodies for FRAND licensing and Apple has absolutely no intention of ever licensing them to anyone. Chumps.
I say it will be called The Apple 'Touch' ...not the iPod Touch, not the iPad Mini, etc... just the 'Touch'. I say they phase out the iPod Touch the way we know it today & make this the hybrid.

NYT would be the last to get any info. NYT is on the same list as Gizmodo as far as Apple is concerned

Definitely agree.
If only the ipad had a better aspect ratio...
