They have, with some even going to the extreme of suggesting Apple is doing it to force users to buy all new accessories.
And these people are not thinking ... What on Earth would Apple stand to gain by forcing users to buy all new accessories? Sure Apple offers some of their own, but the vast majority of them are produced by third parties. If anything, changing this connector is going to upset third party manufacturers since most of their products are going to suddenly become obsolete. If anything, Apple is trying to force consumers away from the dock connector in favor of AirPlay wireless connectivity, not sell new dockable accessories.

And yeah, there will be a massive incompatibility problem, adapter or no. An adapter is not going work in every case depending on how the device is constructed.

So again this article doesn't really do anything except state the obvious. There will obviously be an adapter should the smaller dock connector rumor prove true. Should have been paired with some related story that was actually newsworthy ...

Thank you. I was at a loss for the benefit of moving the headphone jack to the bottom.

I personally will probably find it annoying that all of the chargers plugged in around the house for convenience will have to have an adaptor sitting next to them, since we will have a mix of devices for at least the near future.

The dock connector is dead. Long live the dock connector.

Seems feasible you would just need to plug a different cable into the power nugget?

You know one thing I don't recall anyone mentioning in all these comment threads about this yet is that currently the headphone jack on the iPhone is on the top and right next to the front facing camera, but on the opposite side of the rear.  What is the headphone jack placement is part of what is holding back the quality of the facetime camera.  Maybe moving that to the bottom will allow them to have a much nicer front facing camera.  That would be very nice

I wonder which side the earphone jack will be on.

In the photo shown in this article, it's on the bottom-right (when the iPhone is facing the user), but in the ETrade Supply video, it's on the bottom-left.

I'd guess that it'll be similar to the current position on the 4S, which is on the left.

There is a slight, faint, possibility that I used the wrong word there, but yeah.  I think everyone agrees there are unused pins and therefore they should probably be removed.

That sucks..... For those that are interested.  The Apple USB to 30 pin connector cable that ships with most iDevices don't last long, so I found the Audioquest Forest or Cinnamon cable is far more durable and one can get those for about the same price as an Apple product that doesn't last as long.  I'm sure Audioquest will have to come out with a modified cable once these new devices start shipping.

The iPod touch (2010) has the socket on the bottom right.

I'm a big fan of being able to video chat or watch movies without having to pin the cord behind it.

While true, there are other situations if the cord is coming out the bottom, it will get in the way down there too. Im not sure there is an overwhelming need to move it, but I suppose since they did the new connector(if true)... m'eh, why not.

As for me, Im wondering if they ever get to a point where they don't need cords except for maintenance type things... . blu-tooth 4.0 low power headphones... Inductive charging, wifi syncing etc. And if they go 801.AC at some point... really fast syncing.

I'm wondering how far away those are. We still don't have 802.11ac in any Mac despite the recent update. Even once we do there will still be a limitation of data transfer speeds. We also don't yet have 802.11n at 5GHz on the iPhone/Touch. Inductive charging is slow, is less energy efficient, and seems to be less durable to wear and tear from extended use. Can Bluetooth 4.0 Low-Energy be used for quality (256Kbps or higher) audio transfers?

I think I will just wait and see myself. I'm from Missouri (well, my parents were). My guess is if Apple doesn't, someone will.

For accessory makers, this could be the golden goose, as the 30 pin dock has been around for as long as there has been iPods (2001) and iPhones (2007). This means an accessory maker investing in docks, radios, speakers and the like could have around 10-12 years lifespan with the new connectors. But for the rest of us it could be a right pain. I am sure Apple would smooth this transition, let's hypothesise what this might look like. As recent as 2009, the big tech companies agreed a new micro standard for USB, which is great, it should mean being able to use the same charger for all products who sign up for this standard. Apple has introduced a dock to miniUSB converter to comply with the EU legislation. When is a charging cable, not just a charging cable? When its an Apple charging cable, in this humble cable is a host of proprietary technology hidden inside, making it small and efficient.

I'd like the new apple charging cable to have a raised edge or something that makes it obvious by TOUCH which side is up.  There are only two times I plug in my phone: In my car and when I go to bed.  In both cases it would be very helpful to not have to look at the cable while doing it. I know, petty.  But if I start driving, and then decide to plug the phone in, i'd rather just spot the cable then, by feel, plug it in.  Right now it's 50/50 I get it right.  Same for at night - the lights will be off and I'll be messing around on the phone in bed, then i go to plug it in and have to use the phone's screen to light up the cable end.  I little bump on the top side and all is solved.  of course Apple doesn't want their smooth lines disturbed, even on a cable. ;)

If Apple changes the Dock connector, they'll have no choice but to release an adapter. /Thread.
