My bad. I see your point now, and agree in that sense. And your first point, too. They're forcing everyone to these shared plans by refusing to subsidize the phones, etc.

Does Verizon even have an Unlimited plan? I don't believe they do.

They did. And if you want to keep yours at this point you have to pay ful price. You get a subsidy, you lose unlimited

And even then, you'll just hit the throttle point faster. And those on other plans will hit overage faster. So it's really not that awesome a deal in the end

Following the debut of Apple's iPhone 5 on Wednesday, Verizon wireless announced that it will allow all iPhone 5 data plan subscribers to use iOS 6's FaceTime over cellular, countering rival carrier AT&T's plan which limits the feature to the company's Mobile Share data plans.
FaceTime video calling over cellular networks will be enabled when iOS 6 launches on Sept. 19, however U.S. wireless operators have differing views on how to charge customers who use the data-hungry feature.
In a press release regarding the iPhone 5, Verizon said customers wanting to use the voice calling feature can do so on any data allowance tier, including existing unlimited plans. FaceTime over cellular will apparently not be available for existing iPhone 4S users.

    From the release:

Customers purchasing iPhone 5 will also want to purchase a Share Everything Plan beginning at $40 monthly access and $50 monthly account access that includes unlimited voice, unlimited text, picture and video messaging, and a data plan that can be shared with up to 10 devices on a single account. And, customers wanting to use FaceTime on their iPhone 5 can do so using any Verizon Wireless data plan allowance.

Sprint also said that it would not be imposing any restrictions on FaceTime use.
AT&T, however, announced in August that it would be restricting FaceTime over 3G and 4G networks to iPhone users who sign up for the company's new Mobile Share data plans. The carrier subsequently released a public letter defending the move, saying that it was within its rights to block the app's access because it doesn't offer its own video chat service.
Pre-orders for Apple's iPhone 5 will begin on Sept. 14, with shipments to follow a week later on Sept. 21.

So they are actually imposing more restrictions than AT&T. Neither company is letting you use an unlimited plan. (Since no Verizon iPhone 5 user will have an unlimited plan), but Verizon is also limiting this to the iPhone 5. Unless I am wrong and this more than just a Verizon decision and no-one is allowing the 4S to do facetime over cellular.

Same here, when I move to the Share Everything plan, I'll be able to use my iP 5 as a hotspot for my wifi iPad, there is no extra charge for that feature. And yeah, VZ is pricier than ATT, but honestly I've been with VZ (Alltel before that) with a very, very long time and I've probably dropped a total of 5 calls in that time, and the speeds, service, bills are consistent.

Long story short, I'm not going anywhere. Especially since I hear so many bad things about ATT!

I saved $19 a month moving my iPad to AT&T Global share. Since I am either using data on my phone or on my iPad. Rarely both. It works out well.

Verizon's plans suck for someone who only has one personal phone. I called them out for that on Twitter and their only response was that if you add more devices in the future you could save. But unless/until you have multiple devices they just don't have any good options.

You mean like how verizon is forcing everyone to move to their shared data plans if you want a subsedized iphone 5? I'll take AT&T's approach over verizon.

I'm running iOS6 GM on an ATT iPhone 4 and can't make FaceTime calls over cellular. If I try, I receive the same error message that you receive in iOS5. I checked all the settings and there's no switch to enable it. Any ideas?

I expect AT&T to reverse their policy on this since Verizon and Sprint aren't charging for it. There are costs for supporting FaceTime properly but they are ultimately minimal and the backlash of charging for something that people don't understand even though they use that backend tech every day just isn't good business. Verizon has been smart to fold in the cost into other things. AT&T should take notes.

The article and press release clearly state "And, customers wanting to use FaceTime on their iPhone 5 can do so using any Verizon Wireless data plan allowance." That doesn't sound the same as AT&T to me.

I think you've totally misread what is being said.

If you want a subsidized iPhone, you are REQUIRED to use one of the new plans at Verizon. There is no grandfathered unlimited plans. You can keep your non-shared plans, but pay full price for the iPhone. Is facetime over cellular worth the $400?

Facetime over cellular won't be a changer for the vast majority of people, simply because very few people actually use it in their daily lives.

Does anyone know if Verizon is capable of voice and data at the same time over LTE?

I know their current service doesn't do this on iPhone 4s.

    I have AT

    Yes.

Why is AT&T cut off when some people type it? And why do some people type ATT?
