yes, this is true. but apple seems to have a knack for shrinking things.

I had a Minolta Dimage XT digital camera about 10 years ago. It had a folded lens design that allowed a 3x optical zoom to be contained within the body of the camera. I imagine a similar idea could be used in an iPhone.
