I would hate to be the one in the back of a court room speaking into my iPad. LOL...
Yes, I must say, this use case might not be the best one. Then again, lawyers are paid enough they can afford to learn an obscure language to talk to Siri. /s
But none of the competitors will try to sell a 128GB tablet at the same price! Ok except the always clueless MSFT, but still...
I do believe there is a 128 GB Surface Pro. But whereas the actual capacity is like 125 GB and the iOS etc takes up perhaps 2 GB of that (leaving the cx with 123 GB for their stuff) all the Windows stuff takes up like 50 GB (leaving the cx with only 78 GB) so can we really call it a 128 GB Surface. Many cx are say no and talking class action for false advertising.
... as nice as it is to have a 128gb (on-board) storage option (at a rather exorbitant cost), merely increasing capacity does not fundamentally change the functionality of the iPad.
Likely the single biggest obstacle for to having such a large amount of storage on an iPad is that iOS still lacks a user accessible file system, so as to easily acess all of those 'CAD files' etc. one might load on all that new space.
Note: Several competing mobile devices have reached the 128gb storage level already via having 64gb of built-in storage plus (fully OS integrated) 64gb microSDXC/Class 10 cards (often found for around US 50.00) with 128gb microSDXC cards soon to be released.
Not Really... at least not until it gets a user accessible file system and the abilty to run apps in individual windows etc.
Millions of iPad users don't care if it has a file system or not. It works great as is. If it was really a problem, people would be flocking to Android and Windows tablets and that's just not happening.
Why buy a Molex when you can buy a Rolex? Don't Apple's imitators realize that the existence of the Molex proves the value of the Rolex?
I hope Apple prevails on all their design patents, but not for their sake. Right now there is only one way to do things: Apple's way. If Apple's imitators are forced to be creative, they might produce products that are really better than Apple instead of just as good as Apple.
In the course of a conversation, I showed someone a video on my iPhone. He immediately said, "Wow! Look at the sharpness! Look at the colors! That's fantastic." Then he pulled out his chunky Android phone to demonstrate how mine was better. I wonder what brand his next phone is going to be.
He is cheap enough to not go for the Galaxy S III, nor the iPhone. I think your answer is "a chunky Windows Phone".
"To begin with, the iPad 4 only has space for a single NAND flash chip — and Samsung only recently released the first single-chip 128GB solution."
Is it true that Samsung is currently Apple's sole supplier for the NAND chips on this new iPad?
I think Samsung is most likely but I know Micron and Sandisk are using the 20nm process for 128GB single chip solutions. AnandTech has had a few reviews of the new Intel mSATA SSDs.
Fun to read the comments.... "Fanboy, reading a lot into storage, drank the koolaid" all very funny.
But his history is dead on, and the logic is sound.
I would disagree. His history is full of this kind of logic and it is not, in my opinion, sound. DED constantly posits that everything is about beating the competition despite Apple over and over saying they don't care about what the other boys are doing, what they are earning etc. So this 'statement' that Apple did this bump to beat anyone is likely false and is solely based on getting enough user feedback about the desire for more storage that it is worth trying out. No better test than a silent release up with basically no hoopla and see who bites.
The lack of a file system is OK if you have a few files. Once you get get past a few dozen within the same app organization starts to become a problem. With hundreds of files it becomes unusable.
That has nothing to do with a lack of centralized and user accessible file system in the OS but a lack of organization features in the apps. Which is not Apples fault as they didn't write them
Wow. Couldn't even get through that article. (and I love the Dil.),but seriously... What kind of a "bleep" would use the word "iPad" and "fat" in the same sentence?!
About 119GB since 1GB = 1 billion bytes. 83GB is available for the user so the OS and other stuff takes up about 36GB.
At first glance, Apple's 128-gigabyte iPad doesn't seem like much of an advance. After all, the company's competitors won't have too much difficulty in adding more memory to their own tablets.

When the iPhone appeared, it packed an iPod-style amount of storage, making it more expensive than most of its smartphone competition. That extra RAM, however, also made it notably more useful, serving as a phone, an iPod and a software platform capable of running a real browser, desktop class email and sophisticated apps and games.
Does the author understand the difference between storage and RAM? I think probably yes, but statements like the above, especially the second one, make me scratch my head.

Excellent presentation (save for Alisha Keys giving her celebrity impression at the end). Very focused and organized all the way through. Highly professional.
Love the clever gestures, the simple switching between personal/work screen options, the tying of BBM (like iMessages) in with video sharing (like FaceTime) with one button, and the ability to share your screen with someone. So hard to troubleshoot an iDevice if you can't see the display.
Aww, that's sweet. They're pulling an Apple. So for the last 11 months of their existence, they're changing their name to "better reflect their scope". Also, now we have two fruits in the industry.

Removable storage on a mobile device is considered an unacceptable security problem by many corporate customers.
Correct. I believe it was even stated there would be no preorders etc.

09:47AM EST - T-minus 15 minutes until this thing starts...
09:39AM EST - On the plus side for RIM, I feel like we're quickly approaching maturity in the current era of mobile devices. The next era will be mobile/desktop convergence and no one has demonstrated obvious leadership towards that end yet.
09:36AM EST - I suspect winning over the first group won't be all that difficult, it's the second that I'm unsure of.
09:35AM EST - Success will be determined in two phases imho: can RIM retain its faithful user base and then, can RIM begin to win back users who have been lost to Apple/Google
09:35AM EST - The world is a very different place today, but there are still a significant number of BB and BB enterprise users who RIM can still sell to
09:34AM EST - I was a huge BlackBerry user through college, it was the first platform I could really be productive on after my old Palm V
09:30AM EST - So far both NYC and the venue are cooperating - weather isn't horrible and upstream bandwidth is awesome
I like Daniels articles, I guess I'm a Dedhead!.
I've been watching the live stream.
