This is getting ridiculous. I can at least understand why Amazon, who has had the Kindle for years, and Mozilla would want to make a mobile OS, but Facebook is just a bit daft. Who's next, Dropbox OS and GoDaddy OS?

Well, maybe their "new home on Android" is just a new Android app. I'd very much doubt they'd release anything branded "Android" because that would mean sharing all their user data with Google.

I too think this is all it is.

PS: This reminds me of when I was 8yo and tried to build an airplane with my tool kit that consisted of a saw, hammer, screwdriver and some nails. Not a model airplane, mind you, but one that I could fly around the neighborhood. The wings were shorter than arms outstretched with no aerodynamic features to create lift on the wings or a means of propulsion.

That is so funny...I did the same thing. A "plane" totally built out three 2x4's.

It was only a plane in my imagination! :)

Google/Android is a dogshit business model.

And they are about to find that out for themselves.

Samsung is about to screw them silly! :)

So a company that can't make a simple iOS app that doesn't suck wants to make an entire operating system.
    Priceless.

Because the barriers to entry are very low... and Microsoft's is at its absolute weakest in this market in terms of influence and marketshare. These guys could've just as easily forked Linux to create a Facebook PC OS, but no one would use it because of Windows' near universal dominance there, with Mac OS X grabbing the rest of the non-Windows pie.

I say it is a new Android App for two reasons. First, Facebook hates Google, and Facebook can't call an OS Android, like it does in the announcement, unless Facebook uses Google services. For instance, Amazon doesn't refer to its Android forked OS as Android anywhere. There was a story months ago Facebook was encouraging employees to dump iOS phones to buy Android phones so that the employees could improve its Android Apps.

Second, this would piss off Apple and Microsoft too much. Both companies have allowed Facebook OS integrated access to their platforms, something denied Google. I doubt Facebook would risk that when the likely hood of success is slim.

Facebook needs to be more like Netflix: platform neutral.

Apple and Samsung have been dominating mobile. Facebook wants a piece of the action. HTC will manufacture the phone but it will be sold by Facebook. They also have the advertising muscle to make it popular.

Why are some of you struggling to understand why Facebook is doing this?! Isn't it obvious?

The have a good chance at dominating the Android market and generating large sums of cash.

You may hate Facebook, but that does not take away from the fact that this will probably be the best business decision Facebook ever made.

The ad says New Home ON Android.  It doesn't say Facebook Android OS, did it?

Are you guys sure that Facebook is going to come out with their own version of an Android OS?  That's not what I got from the invitation.

Samsung customizes Android with its Touchwiz UI layer. Facebook will likely do the same thing. If you want deep Facebook integration on your smartphone you have to get the Facebook phone. The Facebook.app will be available on Android and iOS but will not be as integrated.

Thank god. Now all the little tweens who keep posting that Apple isn't "koool" and "it's for old people, man" will have a place to go and "face", and pop their bubblegum bubbles.

Actually, what is ridiculous is that Facebook doesn't yet have a phone out yet. They have the best communication platform in the world, with the best and most popular contact management system ever.

Reminds me of the ATF fiasco whereby American guns sold to Mexican cartels are used to shoot Americans/ATF agents.

So Google makes Android, which Facebook will use to compete against...Google. Wow, what a great business idea.

Does this mean Apple will drop Facebook integration in the iPhone like they did with Google Maps?

Ping was a major failure.  I hope they don't get any ideas of their own is creating a Facebook competitor.

YES, PLEASE DO, APPLE. ALSO TWITTER.

And then just allow an API whereby an app can add its relevant options to those popup (guess they're overlays now, huh?) menus OS-wide. BUT also allow the user to turn them off selectively, even if they have the app in question.

It's a win-win. People who couldn't care less about this crap never have to see it EVER, and other apps that might want space (or would benefit from space) in those Apple app menus can have them.

I think it is all about capturing mobile ad revenue.  So basically, Facebook forks Android like Amazon did and gets the advertising and app store revenue.  Between Facebook, Amazon, and Samsung, I would think Google is pretty worried about now.  Time for Google stock to crash.

I presume you're kidding because, otherwise, you are wrong on all counts:

    - It's not obvious.

    - They do not have a good chance at dominating Android market.

    - It would be the worst decision Facebook ever made.

But, as I said, you are kidding.

It helps that Netflix collects at least $8 a month from millions of customers.

It sounds like Facebook developing its own mobile OS to finally make some money from its mobile users.
