This point should have been featured in Tim Cook's remarks yesterday.
The fact that Apple had its second-best March quarter in history was overshadowed by his revealing that we have about 6 months to wait for new product news.
If you watched after-hours trading, the financial results drove the price up around $25,and then the "no news until fall" comment wiped out the gain and started the bloodbath. The cynic in me would say that when you are announcing the biggest stock buyback in history, it doesn't hurt to get the shares at a very low price.
When was the last time HP or Dell announced a product that engenders the same excitement as a boring, non-innovative S version of iPhone? Do their stocks get pounded? This is just market irrationality, which will eventually settle down ... then start all over again.
Ocelot or Lynx, perhaps Bobcat. All the commonly known big cats are taken already. Apple might have to abandon the cat naming soon.
Everything they do in this area will be a repeat.
They've already done Puma, Jaguar, and Mountain Lion which are all the same animal. A Black Panther is also just a type of Leopard. They could do "Cougar" (the same as a Puma, Jaguar, or Mountain Lion), or start going for exotic "never heard" of them cats like the Jaguarundi or something.
It was a joke years ago, but I'm in favor of Sabertooth.
Because then when OS XI is released in… oh… fall 2015 (phew, that's early!), they can lampshade the name themselves and say "OS X has served us very well, but it's getting a little long in the tooth."

A Puma, Cougar, and Mountain Lion are all the same animal (Puma concolor) The Jaguar is not the same. Your confusion arises from the common name for 3 different animals, Panther. The Jaguar, Leopard, and Cougar are all commonly referred to as Panthers.
Make Passbook useful. I'm trying it and I can't really make it do anything. I'm not a dumb-ass and I want to make it work, so if I can't handle it, I can imagine that normal users give up on it immediately.
Apple has one more card up its sleeve with the big cat naming scheme, but that would be the end of the line. The last of the big-cat named releases should be named for the biggest cat of all:
They could streamline naming and branding into something like this:
iOS mobile
iOS desktop
The issue here is that "iOS desktop" (formerly "Mac OS X") also runs on mobile devices (e.g., MacBooks).
So maybe they could all just be unified under a single name:
iOS
Then it's just that the code that gets installed on an iPhone, iPad or iMac, etc. is different.
This certainly would be an Apple-ish simplification and would be consistent with trying to streamline and unify branding.
As far as individual major release naming, I'd love to see Apple move away from the cat naming. Maybe they could do something unique and interesting like colors. Perhaps as something of an homage to their original logo, the next 7 generations of OS X (and iOS) could go something like this:
I sure hope so. It was cute at one point. I feels like it's time to move on.
Maybe they will start the convention anew with iOS and xOS.
I think aside from the cat name "debacle" the real problem Apple has, is that OS X itself is a huge brand for them. This means that they can't really switch to "OS XI" because that would be meaningless and destroy the brand while at the same time replacing it with nothing special. There is a public perception that after "10.10" they have to change to something else however. They either have to create a totally new brand to replace OS X, or just move ahead with 10.11, 10.12, 10.13, change the cats to something else, and then try to forget about the fact that the whole mess is awkward and silly looking/sounding.
The fact that they are running out of cat names adds a twist however because they have to change the cats out soon, so that might be the same point at which they transition the brand. There are a couple of useable cats left and we aren't *quite* at 10.10 yet so my guess would be that 10.9 will still be a cat, but perhaps a cat without any obvious second act (lion-mountainlion, leopard-snowleopard, etc.), and that 10.10 will be a complete rebrand of some kind.

A cat without a second act would certainly be the saber-toothed cat. It is extinct and therefore has no second act.

How about keeping iOS as it is and renaming Mac OS X as the iOS Development Platform?¡
Seriously though, why rename them at all. I quite like OS X as a brand but if they have to rename it I'd like to see xOS and iOS. I just like the way those look.

How would you pronounce xOS? The X in OS X is pronounced 'ten' not 'ex'
Personally, I have always been a major fan of Ocelot. Lynx is just way too darn close to Linux and I could see a whole boat-load of anal-ysts stating as such. (As an aside, take said boat-load into the Pacific ocean and drop them off somewhere where they can do no more harm; like Gilligan's Island) I can imagine Ocelot because it is very sleek and nimble. Here is a picture for reference:
One other thing, I think tighter iCloud integration will happen. What that entails, I am not sure, but I am certain that they are going to do it. I think that they might actually try to bring touch to OS X as well (but that is a very long shot).
Other than that, I can't think of anything else that they can possibly do to it.

Generally, mac users like the cat names. I figure they will continue for 10.9 at least. Lynx gets my vote.

Wow, you sure can tell how many non-Apple fans are on this site when real Apple news such as WWDC is announced.
Looking forward to whatever they announce, hopefully including a new MacPro for those that have been waiting for so long.

OSX Kitteh. Never been used, and will lower expectations to market norm.

My choice would be OS X 10.9 "Pussycat."
The artwork should be obvious.

Garfield.
Can't wait for some more innovation for the trackpad like second screen or software bottoms/functionality.
Going back and forward/zoom/etc should (like safari) be an option to the OS itself and every app.
it could double as numeric keyboard when needed.
-etc.
Please Apple, just because the others are so behind, it does not mean that you can't move forward.
Also, software. More focus on pro software.

No problem attaching a document saved on the computer.
You don't send an iWork document from Mail...
You send it from the Share menu in iWork.

Unfortunately, it does look a little skittish (kinda like my cats, who are both Maine Coon kitties)
