I'm not sure why it has to have a "masculine" name though, I always thought those graphic card names like Force/Power/Titan/Fire etc. were kind of dumb myself. YMMV
Names are used for association. Like Aperture, you know it's got something to do with cameras. When it's performance and power, you tend not to think about flowers or even your eye. Iris has an association with imagery so while it does have something to do with a graphics chip, I'd say it would be more suited for something like Lightroom e.g Adobe Iris or:
Apple does it too with Airport Extreme and Macbook Pro vs Air, OS X Lion vs Kitten. The name Intel uses doesn't have to mean powerful, it's just normally the association with processors and Iris in no way means powerful, which is obviously why they had to add Pro for the faster one.
How will this improve graphics performance on the 13" Retina MacBook Pro?
It depends on which chip they use. Intel likes to make loads of versions. There will be ones with fast graphics and ones without. The ones with the fast GPUs should be 2-3x faster than the last generation. The ones with the slower GPUs won't be dramatically faster than the old ones, maybe 25-50% faster.
The slow ones being called Iris would be fine, the fast ones could have been called Tornado or Avalanche. You don't want to be standing in a field picking Iris flowers with a girl called Iris when a tornado comes along.
They could have used Apocalyse or Eclipse to signify that the end is nigh for NVidia/AMD.
Power is not stictly male and submission is not strictly female.
Who mentioned submission or being "strictly"? Physical power is typically a masculine quality. If you are in a burning building, are you expecting a woman to arrive in the fire truck, pick you up and carry you out the window? You expect someone at least as heavy as you because of the laws of physics. Same with tennis, they don't play singles together:
The problem is nothing to do with the association that arises from the real world but whether it's viewed as positive or negative. I think it's negative to give a graphics card the name of a girl but I think it's also a negative to give a girl the name of a graphics card. I seriously hope nobody considers calling their daughter Titan for the sake of avoiding sexism. It's positive to give a graphics card the name of something powerful and fast and it's positive to give girls names that signify typically female qualities. Being physically powerful isn't one of them.
I bet I know which combination of petroleum byproducts you have in your bathroom ...
I actually have the female ones but I hide the smell with male deodorant - the male ones don't give a nice lather, they feel like washing with clumps of jelly.
Could someone give me some pointers to allow me to compare the Intel Iris video chip to the NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512 Mo that came with my MacBook Pro / Fall 2008 ?

The faster ones will be at least the speed of the NVidia 640M:
It took Intel 4 years to catch up to NVidia's dedicated GPU and the 9600M is still faster in some tests. The Haswell jump should bring the IGP up to the speed of the 2012 NVidia GPUs assuming Apple uses the Crystalwell/Pro ones with the 5200 graphics and not the 4600 graphics. If not, it's still faster but only about 15-50%, which would be barely noticeable and wouldn't be a significant improvement on the 9600M:
Maybe they actually wanted people to stop thinking of strength in a purely physical, purely masculine, way. That would be cool and forward-thinking on their part.

It's utterly different. There isn't nonsense about masculinity/femininity in those threads.

Yeah, being attacked by a female Mountain Lion is no picnic.

That is one of the funniest things you've ever written, at least on here in the posts I've read.

If they end up 2.5x-3x the speed of the last gen, they'll be closer to the 650M:

The 9600M is in the region of the current Intel graphics - the HD 4000:

Its actually a reverse palindrome or Semordnilap.

Girls = raw unadulterated power.
(+ as previously stated: Iris is anagram of Siri + association with eyes/cameras).
