Not everyone lives close to an Apple Store (at least those of us outside the US).  Sadly, the Apple Store closest to me is two hours away... by bullet train and other transport (which means $200 round trip).  My local reseller may or may not get Logic as a demo (Apple decides what they get free) and they may not be able to buy it.  I'll just have to cross my fingers; I don't need X, but I sure want it... can probably talk myself into needing it...

    That said:

FCPX has a demo.  I hope that it is a matter of time (soon, please) that Apple readies a demo for Logic.

Sent in feedback asking for a demo.

What exactly do you need to see before you buy, for such an advanced, feature rich software, this is an absolute bargain at 200. There is no other piece of software in this price range that even comes close, even Fruity Loops you pay 300 for the online XXL version.

If I was in music creation, yeah, a no brainer.  I'm not.

I have Logic 9, Audtition, Amadeus Pro, Sound Studio and of course Garage Band, so my bases are covered.

No need.  Other, large expenses (cameras, air conditioning, room remodeling).  Causes some hesitation, or at least delay.

If I try it and it is much better (for my needs, which are truly basic where audio is concerned), then I might buy.  Indeed, Amadeus Pro does everything I need, and well.  But, when I want to play around and get a little more creative... that's when the others come in.  Audition piggy-backed on Premiere, which I had to get because I needed Encore in order to create BluRay.

Are you kidding? 199 dollars for Logic is dirt cheap. Had Apple kept their old pricing scheme, this software would be at least one thousand dollars.

There are plenty of articles and reviews out, and anybody should be able to make an informed decision before purchasing.

Many plug ins cost alot more than 199. 199 is nothing at all. It is the bargain of the century.

Not to mention with discounted iTunes cards you can get it for even less.

Here's somewhere that Apple can't ever afford to get rid of skeuomorphism. And here's whence Jony will be taking a leaf or two when iOS 7 doesn't pan out as well as he wants.

Logic is skeuomorphism done right. It always has been. So was iOS, mainly. I really don't think the drastic pendulum shift of iOS 7 was warranted across the board. They'll fix it in 8, though.

I think skeuomorphism works wells in certain apps, like Logic. But I think it should be confined to apps, and only where it adds to ease of use.

The problem with iOS <7 is that skeuomorphism was used *too* much, and often just for the sake of adding gloss (compass app, for instance). I don't have a problem with iOS 7 stripping out the gloss and letting the OS get out of the way. I don't think there's any rule that apps can't be skeuomorphic.

Soundtrack Pro hasn't been updated in three years. It's dead.

What were the things you liked about it? Not jabbing, genuinely curious (asked by an only ever Pro Tools user who wonders if he should learn something else someday).

Well, if you use ProTools you might want to branch out into Logic Pro X. Learning Soundtrack at this stage would be a step backwards.

Nah, Logic is a music creation tool. I do audio-for-video.

I briefly used ProTools many, many years ago and I didn't like it. Sorry I cannot give you a good comparison. All I can say is I liked Soundtrak because it had a nice cross fade tool.

There's lots to hate about Pro Tools, but crossfades are actually one of its greatest strengths.

You create it by dragging the mouse between regions. The farther you drag, the longer the fade. In preferences you can set up a default fade curve -- constant power or constant gain -- but you're not stuck with it. Double-click the fade and a window pops up that lets you drag the curve around with the mouse.

Want less of one region and more of the other? Drag the fade side-to-side or lengthen it on one side and shorten it on the other or shorten both sides or pretty much anything you want. To really appreciate it though you have to see how intuitive, quick and easy it is with Pro Tools.

Very effective, sonically amazing and very fast.

I make sure that the sounds I add and way I combine them supports what's happening on screen and never distracts from it. If I have a choice of sonic "directions" I'll try to choose one that reinforces and helps sell the product.

The picture will tell you what it wants sonically, you just have to learn how to listen with your eyes.

That is my philosophy towards doing soundtracks for promos.

    What?

    Oh.

    Never mind!

Fruity loops is not the same thing as Logic, I wouldn't compare the two.

Aw poo. My joke scored a fail. I was trying to do a play on misunderstanding "porno" and thinking you wrote "promo!" I guess I'm about as funny as I am smart!

If I ever spout pretentious crap like "listen with your eyes" in real life it is my sincere hope that my loved ones will have me put down.

You should always "see with your ears" instead.
