Well it looks like I'm no longer in remission

If she has PM e-mails turned on, a PM would, well, ping her e-mail account, and if a family member is still monitoring that…

    I did, no reply.

There's no activity logs but as mentioned earlier, the most recent access is from a device she's never used before and a different country. If she had that device first and logged it in before handing it to someone, it would have logged it where she was so it seems more likely that she gave her login details to someone else e.g by email. She said before that she'd have someone post an obituary on the forum but maybe they are checking out if it's a good idea to do this or not. It's probably a bit strange having to post this kind of thing on behalf of someone else on an internet forum.

    1) she also said she would be giving all of her devices / PC's away. Quite likely now that she indeed has passed away and devices are being / have been transferred. Hence the short logon; possibly someone just powering on a device, going 'ah, it all works, let me format the storage'.

    2) It will not only be difficult for her next of kin to post her obituary but possibly also strange as she was the techie and I don't think we can assume her husband or children are going to look for her login pw and post under her name. Then again, if she made the request one would assume it would be 'granted'.

Anyway, too many assumptions on my part. For now we don't know, but it looks like we won't ever. Well, that's not true, but a confirmation would take away the worrying.

Are you guys completely confident about the identity of this poster? The LinkedIn profile (http://ch.linkedin.com/pub/sonja-gehrig/47/114/478) that Marvin posted looks like the same person as in the video, but the spelling is different and there is no mention of CalTech.

That can't be right; this woman got her degree in 1997, which makes me believe she is way too young. But there is no 'Sonja Gerig' on LinkedIn...

Yes, a blond germanic looking woman.  /shrug

It is unlikely they are the same person.

It is possible, but odd, if relic provided Robin with a bad name or something.  The internet can be an odd place but other than getting Robin a bit concerned there's no payoff that I can see for being deceptive.

I suppose someone could send a note to the person in LinkedIn and see.  That would be easiest if a little weird.

Yes, I tried PMing her too–no luck. But then, the last couple of times I PMed her while she was still posting she didn't respond either. It was getting more and more complicated for her to use devices and post before she went dark.

I wondered at some of the info posted by a Moderator earlier (multiple accounts, sketchy explanations, etc.)–thought he may have been hinting at the possibility of our being Catfished. Always a possibility online I suppose, but seems unlikely.

Anyway, I also found that Linked In profile earlier and wondered about there being two Sonja Gerigs (Gehrig's) in Switzerland. Wish we had another Swiss on this forum who could do some sleuthing in country. I have yet to hear back from the hospital, and may not. Haven't tried the orchestra yet.

That would have taken someone very clever with a lot of free time. I also don't see how it would be that amusing to keep such a thing going so long. If you note some of the later forum posts, it's easy to see a drift in writing style where she would have been heavily medicated. She mentioned also posting on a nokia forum, but I haven't looked.

I agree with Muppetry that the linked in profile doesn't seem to match up with our Sonja (Relic). I just sent an inquiry to the Zürich Orchestra using Babelfish to translate. A similar one to her hospital has gone unanswered.

I think this has a much better chance, considering a hospital privacy guidelines.

Tried the Cal Tech Alumni Association and just got this response:

"Unfortunately, I wasn't successful in finding any information about Sonja. She did not appear in the database under either spelling provided for her last name, nor is there a "Sonja" with an address in Switzerland."

I have responded asking if her query were of just association members or of all past students.

Actually, I'm not sure if the hospital inquiry was actually received. There was some kind of error notice, and it was not clear if it meant it didn't go through or whether it was just a format or other minor issue.

Here is what I got back from Cal Tech.

"The database I used was for all graduates, and some students who attended but did not graduate. You could check at the Registrar, regis@caltech.edu, to see if Sonja attended Caltech, as they have a more comprehensive database, but they wouldn't have contact information for her."

She may be one of those who attended but didn't graduate. Don't know that I want to dig deeper. As it is, it gets "curiouser and curiouser." Does anyone recall if she said definitively that she graduated?

"I went to university in California, CalTech, I recieved my masters in Computer Science with a minor Mathematics. I was going to go to ETH in Zurich but then I was offered a scholarship."

If she got married after she graduated, she would likely be listed under her maiden name.

Good point, but Cal Tech searched for Sonja's in Switzerland and came up dry.

"Assistant of Prof. Dr. D. Steiner at ETH Zurich". It doesn't mention CalTech though.

She once said she was a VP of internal programming at the UBS bank but she was known to make things up regularly, usually to have a jab at Apple. As soon as Apple announced the Radeon cards in the Mac Pro, she went on about the awesome performance she was getting from her cheap CUDA cards that she could put in the PCIe slots the MP doesn't have and how her Modo software used CUDA nodes - she read the wrong spec sheet online as it's Nuke that uses CUDA nodes. She said she had a party and loads of girls were showing her their broken iPhones, clearly made up rubbish, just because she was going on about Nokia. The mention of the UBS bank was something to do with Chromebooks, Windows 8 touchpads or Lenovo tablets gaining popularity.

She seemed quite specific about CalTech, mentioning the years 92-97 but that doesn't match up with the above profile. She said recently she'd been married for 12 years so her entire education would have been before marriage.

Things that do check out are the variety of devices used, there are tons of variations in the access logs, the vast majority being Windows, Android and Linux devices with an iPad being one exception very recently. The programming ability also checks out from a few of Relic's posts.

Someone claiming to be a work colleague posted on the site too so perhaps they were mixing anecdotes and backgrounds to mess around.

No offense but this thread is getting a little stalkerish with a lot of information being bandied about that while being in the public domain would take a lot of time and effort to extrapolate.

Yes, I understand that she meant a lot to the forums, but I think we could be a little more discrete about it.

If she is gone, then she is gone and maybe we look to honour her memory with a donation to something she believed in. If she has sadly passed, then the charity wins.  If she rises from the dead then everyone wins.

2c.  Will not post again in this thread.

Agree. Some of us have already decided to take this to PMs and will not be posting again until something is resolved and a general announcement might be made through the Moderators.

It's not really about finding out every detail but what's genuine and what's not. There are photos posted earlier in the thread and people assumed those were pictures of Relic's dogs but those photos can be found in Google images. There's a photo of a girl in hospital in one of the account albums:

    http://forums.appleinsider.com/g/a/5796853/default/

This was sent by PM from Relic to people and again can be found in Google images. I can understand people using example images rather than genuine ones so it's not necessarily that it's made up but the fact this wasn't made clear just seems a bit odd. Normally people would say that the pictures are examples explicitly instead of having people believe they were genuine pictures.

As I mentioned before, some other info checks out so the info provided that isn't genuine could just have been a way of maintaining some privacy. In light of that, any names that might have been shared or other personal details could well be false too. Rather than try to clarify what is true and what's not, it's probably best to leave it until something definitive is produced and it might never be.

I am posting on behalf of Relic.

Dear all, my sincere apologies for not posting sooner. Thank you all for your kind words and let's just say your enduring passion to find me. I am still alive and kicking, albeit not in any shape to visit any forums for the time being. I will post more when I know the outcome of my predicament. If anyone has any questions please send me a PM as I now have someone checking in for me from time to time. Again, please forgive me if I caused any anxiety to anyone here. It was not my intention as I love being here and all of you as well. You have been my friends for a very long time and God willing a little time longer. I ask those who I have personally reached out too, to not post any of my personal information in this forum. When the time comes I will make sure all of that information is properly presented here, without all of the speculation.

Thank you for understanding and God Bless you all!
