These jackass analysts are just pulling ideas out of their butts. They have exactly no idea what Apple is going to do. They're making up these stories just to show how smart they think they are. I'm sure Apple will eventually make the Retina display standard on all of its mobile products and that should be more than enough to bring costs down. Although there are a lot of cheap plastic Android tablets available, it's likely no company is making money from selling them. Apple should just continue making high-quality products and not try to compete with the Android tablet makers in price. So what if Apple loses market share. That shouldn't be Apple's main focus at all. If Apple gets its act together when it comes to ecosystem services, consumers should be willing to pay for more expensive hardware.

I find that curious, I was expecting the Retina iPad 2 mini to incorporate the A6X from the iPad 4 as a differentiator to the A7X expected in the iPad 5 as its supposed to be a more affordable lower-end variation of the full-size iPad. The A6X already does a fine job in the Retina iPad 4, why incorporate the newer more expensive chip? Not that I'm complaining...que sera, sera.

Also it does seem that come next year, Apple will be doing to the iPad range what its now doing to the iPhone, two tier mid and high-end offerings. iPads with standard resolution displays, plastic housings and last generation SoC's for the mid-range aka the iPhone 5C and the metal construction together with the latest premium components for the high-end. A good strategy I think, Apple still retains its premium image while offering a larger more affordable range of products. Just no plastic MacBook Airs please!

Which iPhone currently on sale has a standard resolution display? Also if Apple was doing plastic iPads why haven't we seen any leaked cases or heard any rumors about it?

If they do keep it, I think they will drop the price, but going from $329 to $200 is too much. $259 is more like it. But they may discontinue both that and the ipad 2 next year for a polycarbonate backed set, as they've done with the iPhone 5C. That would cut costs a fair amount as the aluminum backs are expensive.
My guess Apple is using the cheaper iPhone as a test. If it turns out to be very popular, then yeah we might see entry level iPads with plastic backs in the future. I'm just curious how much more expensive aluminum is than plastic. Unles its not the material but the manufacturing processes that make it more expensive?

I'm not being literal here, of course there are no standard resolution iPhones. As for no leaks or rumours about such devices, that's because I wrote coming out next year, you don't have leaks of products that are a year off in the future. Anyway its just speculation, my guess is as good as anyone else's.

Exactly. I guess we'll just have to put up with months of whining from people who don't understand the difference between "less expensive" and "cheap crap".

Apple will not make a crappy product. That does not preclude offering products at different price points.

Deep inside I´m sure Apple would like to solely focus on retina screens on all their devices, but due to battery consumption and production costs, they are forced to play in the lower quality non retina displays as well.

I think they should offer both ipad 5 and ipad mini with the option to add retina screen.

I think the iPad market share equation for Apple will be greatly influenced by corporate and education markets like we've recently seen with entire school districts and airline companies adopting the iPad on a massive scale. That has a halo effect for the consumer. Most intelligent tablet shoppers don't want to get stuck with a cheap Chinese tablet. If their kids have iPads at school and they were offered one to use while on a flight or saw one at the doctor's office, I think they would be inclined to follow the trend. They might be willing to compromise on the build materials thus a lower price but not on the platform. A colorful plastic shell would be fantastic for iPad sales, and not just the mini, but even the full sized one.

Well, history shows us that this particular analyst is often right. When this guy or the guy at "the loop" says something its worth paying attention.

Both imo, Material is less expensive and so is manufacturing.

With the Nexus 7 retina at $230, they could get away with color casings low cost mini's at $250 if they upgraded the internals, like using the A6. $200 would be better but Apple must retain its margins across all products so its doesnt care whihch one it sells.

Is it just me or is this "new trend" in Apple's strategy a bit concerning?

Not concerning to me until they stick the word Performa in there someplace.

Where exactly did you hear that? Scroll to the bottom of this page because whoever is telling you that is about as wrong as can be.

I like to see a Champagne Color for the iPad Mini 2!  That would be cool!  Apple could sell a lot more with that Champagne color since Black and White are pretty stale colors - everyone has that color but Champagne is new!

I like slate.  It's not black, it's not silver.  Gold is a little too much on the bling side for me, but I could see that before Champagne.   Champagne won't sell.  Having the color and actually selling are two different things.  I still don't see a lot of people running around with the rose gold or whatever they call it, yet the watch stores are loaded with them. I think they look cheap.

Gold is popular in mostly Asia countries like India, China, Southeast Asia areas.  It is also popular in Africa and in the subcultures of the U.S.

I think that the Champagne color will out sell both black and white combined.

That pale a shade of whatever, gold, champagne, straw, looks good on metal. Seen cars where that look worked.

Forget the colors, I think it's important for Apple to just get a fifth-generation iPad out-the-door. With the unveiling of the iPhone 5s and 5c, it's likely the fifth-gen iPad will get an A7X with the M7 coprocessor, perhaps a doubling of RAM but keeping the SSD drives maxing out at 128 GB, along with the other hardware goodies in the new iPhone 5s.

Frankly, I was surprised, perhaps mostly disappointed that towards the end of yesterday's iPhone Event they didn't pull out the old "and one more thing" trick to announce a similarly updated fifth-gen iPad. Logically, I can understand that Apple's supply chain is going to be stretched thin-and-busy cranking out new iPhone 5s/5c units over the next few weeks... #sigh #sadface I don't really need a new iPhone, but I do need a new iPad. My first-gen iPad is now becoming largely useless, short of email, texting in Messages, or web-browsing (as long as I don't try to have too many tabs open) and it crashes frequently. Thus, my eagerness for a fifth-gen iPad.

P.S. I'm not going to buy a fourth-gen iPad when I know that a new one is "around the corner", that they have only a 2-3 year lifespan, and that the fourth-gen iPad is already one year old (thus one year closer towards obsolescence).
