Would they really launch in more countries than the 5 if inventory was so low?
Good question. If these stories are accurate my guess is we won't get any sales figures next week. If they're not accurate I hope Apple sets the record straight before they end up everywhere. The media runs with anything the WSJ or ATD says.
What makes you think this when Apple itself is being very reserved in its positioning of the 5S? It isn't FUD but rather rational responses to the data at hand.
Well if it's not accurate it's up to Apple to set the record straight. But I suppose we'll just get more of the "Apple doesn't respond to rumors" BS.
If I start rumors or speculation about you is it then your responsibility to set the record straight? Apple could spend forever responding to rumors. Competitors could play 20 questions to get an advantage.
I am sure this is just bs rumors spread by people that are short selling Apple stock. We will have more clarity next week what is going on. The demand for the iPhone 5 s will be sky high and Apple will be able to meet it, I am sure of it.
Let's think logically about this. There is a reason 5S' aren't available for preorder. The fingerprint scanner is very new technology that probably has never been produced at a scale this large. It's not crazy to think that they have a short supply of these models.
Luckily my local Apple Store is setting one aside for me :-)
Usually we just call our carrier and we get it when we get it. This time is different since there are no pre-orders and horrible because I sold my 4S and relying on an old Treo. Can we order online and arrange pickup at a store later? If we can is this available both at Verizon as well as my local Apple store?

But as others have asked, then why didn't Apple limit sales to US initially instead of, for the first time, making them available in China simultaneously. That decision suggests that Apple does have sufficient stock to handle the initial surge reasonably well.
Stock outs at the carrier retail locations are bad news though. My experience buying an iPhone at a Verizon store a few years ago wasn't pleasant. They tried to talk me out of the iPhone in favor of some other device. Some (hopefully small) percentage of people who head to a non-Apple store to get the new iPhone will walk out with some other brand of phone if they are out of iPhones (plus an overpriced bundle of crappy accessories).

it must be nice to have someone on the inside, I didn't see anyone waiting outside our local apple store yet, so still hope for picking one up locally , we shall see
How can you use grotesquely" low inventory and "less.. than expected demand" in the same story?
I am pleasantly annoyed at this.
Actually, this is a case where Apple's PR department should address this issue. Responding to false rumors would be a prudent move and there's nothing unsavory about squashing FUD.

Agree. I'll be up at 3:01 local. Hoping that I can order online and pick up in store the same day...probably a long shot.
You need to get up at 2:55. Allow time for your "business' and pounce by 3:01.
If I had to guess, this is probably accurate. That fingerprint scanner is probably causing the delays and these phones will be very hard to come by.
One fingerprint scanner to rule the world?

Good point

I think Apple handles rumors right.

Is "grotesquely" low worse than "low"???
It's a$$hats like these folks that will scream "Apple is doomed" if it takes more than 5 minutes to sell out of the 5S.

Thanks.
I will get up 2:55AM NYC time - order it 3:00AM.
Go back to sleep.
Wake up at 5:30AM.
Get in line at Apple Store @ 6:00AM.; hopefully have it by 9AM.
Go to work and cancel my online order.
Good plan! I'll do a Samsung and copy your idea.

Sounds like a plan- Good luck!
