With all of the marketing dollars and ads for the 5C one would think it would be selling at a higher rate than the 5S, but I guess the cost savings of $100 isn't enough to make the 5C a more attractive option for buyers over the 5S.

Higher rate than the 5s? Really? No.

    Better than the S4? Yes.

But the 5S is the phone with new festures. Of course it's going to grab the early adopters. The 5C might outsell the 5S over the long run. More importantly Apple is starting to create a portfolio around the iPhone which I think is necessary.

Well part of that mystery is that it was selling for 30 days of September, compared to 10 days of iPhone 5s/5c availability.

The other part is that Samsung’s entire business is based on spending billions to advertise for carriers, allowing it to eat up all the non-iPhone sales. So in ten days, Apple destroyed everyone else’s month, including the only Android maker to be making any money.

#2 phone on 2 of the four major carriers. Just to clarify.

Exactly. I think all this hand wringing about iPhone 5C sales is silly.

The quarterly dividend means nothing to me, and I wouldn't even care if they got rid of it. Everybody has their own investment styles, and I'm damn glad that I didn't get stuck holding any AAPL when it was at it's peak last year. I'm very glad that I didn't go long last year, because I would be pretty pissed now, if I had bought at $600 or $700. I'm not going to get caught in that trap.

And to be honest, I am very skeptical about AAPL, not because I don't think that it's a great company, but because there's too much damn manipulation and shenanigans going on.

Are people not aware of loss leaders or using sales to drive traffic to stores? Of course the media is going to spin this as the 5C isn't selling because its their job to push FUD and D&G for Apple.

I keep thinking that the holiday season will define the 5c.

If a lot of younger people get the phone as a gift it could very well take off as a 'cool' object to own. Hell, buy two or three to cover your various moods.

Actually, there are three reasons for sales:

    1. To bring traffic into the store. Selling 5 or 6 popular items at a lower price than the popular competitor will attract new customers.

    2. To get rid of overstock.

    3. Dealer driven sale (complete with spiffs for the retailer)

Because Virgin Mobile is just Sprint's prepaid brand and they do gimmicks like that all the time. They are wholly owned by Sprint, but lack access to their roaming agreements. So it's just like being on Sprint, only worse.

Who in their right mind would expect the 5C to outsell the 5S? The 5S is the latests phone with all the new features. Early adopters (who tend to buy on opening weekend) are going to heavily prefer that. The 5C is basically last year's technology. The people who wanted that could have bought an iPhone 5 any time during the past year.

NIEVER has a previous generation phone outsold the newest one. It would be insane to expect it to.

At $550 unsubsidized, I doubt people will buy 2 or 3. At $450, I could see it as a second phone.

It's not being marketed as a "previous generation phone," though. It's sort of like the Moto X. Google isn't calling it "last year's technology" even though it is. Both are devices marketed as new to people who don't need or care about the latest technology but want a "new" phone. It's entirely possible that over time, the 5c and its successors become the volume sellers. Most of Samsung's volume is at the low end, though virtually all their profits are from the Galaxy line. Apple doesn't want to go to that extreme, but they might want to go from selling 25-50 million phones each quarter (based on cyclicality) to selling 40-70 million.

The 5c must be selling ok, because I just got an email from Ebay's daily deals in my inbox for an iPhone 5c. I clicked on the link to see what kind of deal they're offering, and it's an amazing 3% off, for a price of $535! <img class=" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

2311 people are looking at it per hour, and the limit is one phone per customer. They do have all five colors available.

That's not entirely true. You don't pay for an additional voice plan when you add phones to your account on the family plan. All you pay is just the additional line fee, which is $40 on Verizon.

You really believe the average buyer knows the 5c is "last year's phone"? Mr. & Mrs. Consumer just see the pretty colors for the "new iPhone 5c" IMO. Early adopters/long-time Apple fans may of recognize it for what it is altho even some of them would take you to task for implying it's just an old iPhone 5 in a new case.

I can just see the new advertising for the 5c:

"We just put a pretty color case on last year's phone."

    Wow!! Would that sell well!

And speaking of emails, I just got another one, this time from Radio Shack.

    They want 800 bucks for a Galaxy Note 3. <img class=" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

    Love it.

Actually, what surprises me more are the August numbers. Look at the iPhone 5! #1 on AT&T (a company happy to have it, and #2 on the other three, even with Verizon's apparent disdain for all things iPhone. IN AUGUST! When virtually the entire world knew a new one was weeks away...

I am currently on Verizon, but I think with next year's iPhone 6, and the end of my current contract, I am jumping ship. They have so much hatred for their customers, and the iPhone. There was a time it made sense for me to stay with them, even when I wanted to jump (in the pre-iPhone on Verizon days) but stayed because all my family uses them. Now with minutes and texts being unlimited, it matters not.

So 335 days to go, give or take...

Plus, they can pick out a color, a case, etc.

Adding an extra phone on a shared family plan on ATT costs approx $40/month (depending on data plan, I chose 4GB shared in this example). On t-mobile BYOD it costs $10 (unsubsidized and also unshared data) Assuming you buy a 5C at $99, and calculate the cost of subsidization is (40-10) $30/month, over the 2 years the 5c costs $720 (or $820 if you include the original $99 down).

It's not 2 for the price of one.

On Att 4GB shared plan with unlimited talk text is $70/mo + $40/phone.

    2x5C = 2x$99 + ($70+$40)*24 + ($40)*24 = $3560

    2x5S = 2*$199 + ($70+$40)*24 + ($40)*24 = $3760

    They basically cost the same.
