Adding an extra phone on a shared family plan on ATT costs approx $40/month (depending on data plan, I chose 4GB shared in this example). On t-mobile BYOD it costs $10 (unsubsidized and also unshared data) Assuming you buy a 5C at $99, and calculate the cost of subsidization is (40-10) $30/month, over the 2 years the 5c costs $720 (or $820 if you include the original $99 down).

It's not 2 for the price of one.

On Att 4GB shared plan with unlimited talk text is $70/mo + $40/phone.

    2x5C = 2x$99 + ($70+$40)*24 + ($40)*24 = $3560
    2x5S = 2*$199 + ($70+$40)*24 + ($40)*24 = $3760

    They basically cost the same.

Once again, that assumes that your options are 'no phone' or '2 years of subsidized phone'.

In reality, for most people in the U.S. (since you're listing US carriers), they're going to be paying the carrier, anyway. Once your contract has expired, you get no discount on your rate, so your monthly payment stays the same whether you get a new phone or not. So if your options are "continue plan with existing phone" vs "continue plan with new phone", the cost is $100 for 5C and $200 for 5S.

and 5" screen.  Key differentiator in the big box and retail stores.   Like a buffet vs a fine steakhouse, that extra heapin' helpin' of screen on a phone is a decisioner for lots of people (poor eyesight, and big fingered people expecially).   People can't help themselves thinking that bigger is better, especially at the same price point

Not so for t-mobile whose BYOD plans offer discounted plan rates.  For example, this week, my daughter is getting a 5s for her birthday. It will cost me nothing to change the phone on the plan and an extra $10/mo to add a 2GB data plan on her line.

So for 2 years it will cost me $650 to buy phone initially and $240 in extra data plan, total of $890 over the 2 years.

Buying the 5c instead of 5s will cost me $790.

If she keeps the phone for 3 years, it will cost me an additional $120.

If she were on ATT, she would continue paying the subsidized monthly price ($40) for the extra year, costing an additional $480....

Victim here. We went in to Verizon to get my wife a 5c because she was tired of not getting coverage at our house (we live in a small but deep coverage hole for everyone but Verizon). After pushing some buttons, the sales guy offered us both $0 5cs if we'd trade in our cheapy $80 Virgin Mobile phones. Here you go!

We walked out with $40/mo for each phone, plus a 1GB shared data plan for $42 (I get a discount because of where I work). So we went from $70/mo for two cheap Android phones to $122/mo for 5cs. While I'm not excited about our cell phone bill going up $50/mo, I think we got a good deal. But my marginal cost - assuming the wife got the Verizon 5c ($80/mo) and I kept my beater Android ($35/mo) - was only ~$5/mo.

Of course, Virgin was unlimited everything, but we never went over 500MB/mo so the 1GB shared data should be plenty. And there's something to be said for an $80 beater phone you don't care about scratching, etc.

That's the point.  The 6c and the 6  - along with a "free" 5c if Apple continues that practice - will do very well if the next release is a true redo of the up-to-now flagship - and be joined by a larger-screened sibling next year to fill out the line.

(And in time maybe by a new mobile device that will be......?)

The 5 was already selling very strongly in AUGUST. Of COURSE the 5C is going to be a very successful product. The two new phones are selling like GANGBUSTERS around the WORLD.

The problem is that the false narrative has already been written.  Apple's sales numbers are faked.  The 5C is a flop.  Apples sales may be good today, but they will crash tomorrow.  This is only a temporary success for Apple.  iOS is to Android what Mac OS was to Windows.

The fact that Apple is having the best product introductions in the history of American capitalism, with dramatically rising global marketshare, and record profits, and no end of this run-up in sight, is forgotten.

The thing is, all this negative fiction can't last.  The stock market is blinded momentarily, but what goes up, goes up.  And what comes down, comes down.

Samsung, in my view, is going down.  Losing market share.  Decreasing sales of its phones.  Phones make up the lion's share of Samsung's profits.

Apple is going up.  Great margins.  Great new iOS.  Laying the groundwork of more kinds of devices.  This is the tipping point when all this negative bullsh*t that's being regurgitated and yelled from the rooftops, is going to seem foolish.

Gene Munster is already looking foolish.  All the naysayers and doomsters can't keep denying reality.  This will turn around for APPL stock.  The thing to be doing is to BUY APPL SHARES.

You really believe the average buyer knows the 5c is "last year's phone"? Mr. & Mrs. Consumer just see the pretty colors for the "new iPhone 5c" IMO. Early adopters/long-time Apple fans may of recognize it for what it is altho even some of them would take you to task for implying it's just an old iPhone 5 in a new case.
Yes I do think a lot of people know that because Apple stupidly tied this phone to the 5. I mean in the product video Craig Federighi basically said the C was everything you know and love about the 5 (plus the minor improvements). And calling it 5C didn't help.

Other than those who eat and breath Apple who else even watched the intro? It's big stuff here at AI but most of the world was too busy with anything and everything else.

But that's the way the media spun it - as last years phone in a plastic case being passed off as new. They might have done that anyway, but Apple didn't need to make it easy for them.

Um, well he sounds like another random internet guy much like yourself with an opinion to share. I doubt Apple pays attention to what any of us say here, nor does the rest of the world for that matter. We're all just little voices sharing posts and thoughts on a forum. The world isn't revolving around any of us.

So we're not allowed to have opinions other than anything Apple does is great? Walmart has now discounted the 5C to $45 on contract. And Radio Shack is following Best Buy. Time will tell if this is being done because sales are soft or just to drive traffic, I'm amazed that some absolutely refuse to entertain the notion Apple might have got the pricing on the 5C wrong. And I say might, because its too early to tell. But the major news networks are reporting these price cuts and you know it's going to get spun as either 5C being overpriced or undesired. And lets face it, when it comes to Apple perception often becomes reality.

No one cares what the media says.  If they did the iPhone would have flopped long time ago.  The iPad would have flopped and the iPod.

People either get it or they don't with Apple.  Hundreds of millions of people get it and no amount of media spin will change their mind.
Perhaps. But the constant FUD and D&G spred by the media (plus Samsung's obscene marketing budget) does take a toll after a while.

x2. We'll know better when we see the October sales data. September sales included some channel refill. Not so much for the 5s, which sold out, but definitely for the 5c.

My guess (and it's a guess) is that the iPhone 5c is selling about as well as the 4s did last year (and the 5 might have had Apple kept it around instead of introducing the 5c), but that Apple wanted and/or expected more. All the advertising is for the 5c. Apple knew the 5s would sell itself. But the 5c marks a change in their strategy, albeit a subtle one. Getting it "wrong" at first by no means indicates that the 5c is or will be a flop. Look at the original iPhone and how Apple cut the price by 1/3 after 74 days, and then switched to a traditional carrier subsidy model with the 2nd edition. But it does mean we shouldn't be surprised to see tweaks, and yes, perhaps price changes. I was surprised they didn't drop the 4s and position a base model 5c at the "free"/$450 price point. Maybe this is the first step toward that.

Lol I agree, where are all the "they just sold through to the channel" people?  Apparently the "Channel" is just as empty.<img class=" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

Not if like my kids they already have an older hand me down iPhone and there contract on my family plan was up.  I just got my daughter a 5C and my older son a 5s and me a 5s.  Our iPhone  4s's and 4 were due for an upgrade.  I ended up trading them in and almost paying nothing out of pocket to upgrade all three.  Gotta love the resale value of iPhones.

The number six is reserved for the next model; Apple doesn't seem to be in the habit of upping version numbers for minor upgrades.

In the product video, Federighi explained what the 5c was in a way that will have most people ponying up the extra $100 for the 5s.  A few weeks later, the 5s has the number one sales spot, with the 5c at number 2. Do you think they wanted the 5c to outsell the 5s?

These stats are better than I thought.  Fully expected the 5S to be on top, but a bit surprised to see the 5C in 2nd/3rd place.   Anyone done any research into attempting to turn these into numbers, or at least a possible range?  U.S. market is supposed to be approximately 125 million smartphones sold in 2013 (Canalys if I remember correctly), so pretty close to 10.5 million a month, albeit I would expect with an Apple launch, the number in September will be higher.  I have to figure to be in first place, we're looking at a minimum of 3 million units and 2nd/3rd place a minimum of a million units.   The localytics data last time I checked was still showing approximately a 3.4 to 1 preference in favour of the 5S over the 5C in the US market.  I'm sure some smart analyst must have put something together by now.

Just wish Cannacord would be a bit more forthcoming about their methodology.

This does not look good for Samsung with their flagship phone likely in 3rd place overall.

Either way, it does not matter. Did you see the August iPhone 5 numbers/rankings? A top of the line iPhone that disappeared a few weeks later was still top three on all four major carriers.
