I just don't understand why they had to let him go.
They could have still took iOS in the direction they wanted to with him on board and Tim could've just been the referee between him and Ive.
I believe he is a force in this industry and he could have still contributed I a big way to apple products.
I think this is the biggest mistake apple made since jobs passing.
My guess is it was either Scott goes or more than one of the other SVPs were threatening to leave. John Gruber claimed that even Phil Schiller didnt get along with Scott. So Tim might have been faced with either Scott goes or Bob and Jony leave. Or Bob, Jony and Phil leave. I don't have any inside knowledge, I'm just speculating.
Also, I get the feeling Scott was incredibly loyal to Steve. In many ways I think he was Steve's protégé. Perhaps Tim and the rest of the executive team felt it was time to move forward and Scott had difficulty doing that? Some of the rumors last year claimed he would often knock things down, saying its not what Steve would have wanted. Perhaps he had more difficulty dealing with the loss of Steve than the others did?
Scott may still be on Apple's payroll. I thought he was sticking around, but not actually given any responsibilities. It would be smart - keep Forstall unavailable to other companies for a year or so to prevent any leaks about upcoming projects from getting out. I'm not sued what that would cost Apple, but even a couple million might be worth it.

But do you think Forstall would sign off on something like that? I can't imagine he'd want a paycheck for doing nothing. In Cook's internal email to employees he said Forstall would be leaving "next year", he never gave a specific date.
I wish everyone would stop assuming he hates Apple, without proof.
Your statement makes as much sense as saying Steve Ballmer, who is being forced out of his Microsoft CEO job, will soon be hired as CEO of Apple.
We have no way of knowing what Forstall's feelings are about Apple right now. But things must have been pretty bad there towards the end. Apple's official press release didn't thank Forstall for anything and Cook's internal employee memo devoted one sentence to thanking him. Also I'm assuming Apple's decision to give the media access to Federighi and Ive together was deliberate (as is their intense focus on "collaboration"). A message is being sent without mentioning Forstall's name. I'll be curious to hear his side of the story, if he ever decides to tell it.

We have no way of knowing if the US government is hiding UFOs. But they're hiding something at Area 51. Let's jump to the conclusion that they're hiding crashed UFOs at Area 51.

Who said Scott hates Apple? The guy is unemployed and is a talented developer of world-class operating systems for high-end smartphones. I could see Bill & Co. making him a very lucrative offer.

If things weren't bad Scott would still be with Apple, no? Unless he voluntarily chose to leave. But no one has ever suggested that was the case.

1) He certainly did outstanding work, not just looking at the '163 patent but many others as well.
2) Thanks Mikey for signing the article. The scribd link is very useful.

Woz quit. Steve Jobs quit. Forstall was fired. Who hates Apple more: those who chose to leave or those who were asked to leave?
Think, people.
I know. It just sounded funny to say. Don't take it personally, unless you're Scott Forstall. And for the record, skeumorphism doesn't bother me.

And where would Joe Belfiore go?
Great question.
Scott probably works for samsung.
Here's hoping Forstall will have a chance to reinvent himself and accomplish the next great thing in his technology career.
I was employing understatement in my use of the term paycheck.
Haha! And a "Cards" app.
