People just need to follow good security practices, the biggest two are; don't open emails from people you don't know and don't download apps that haven't been reviewed or from individuals, stay with the mainstream stuff.

It's not about popularity, there are plenty of people that would LOVE to write malware for OS X, it's just not as easy.  Same thing with iOS.  The whole myth about being popular is TOTAL BS.

Look at Symbian.  Hardly anyone uses it, yet it get malware to this day, just look at f-secure's quarterly reports.

The only thing that WOULD happen is that for each type of malware that got released, it would probably AFFECT more people since there are more people using it, but in terms of OS X not being popular enough?  THERE IS NO EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE of that, that's 100% speculation and marketing hype that Ballmer would say and has said.

Well Symbian was the most popular mobile OS for a very, very long time and even though new phones with the OS is becoming smaller it is in the number 3 spot of mobile OS installs. So I wouldn't say no one is using them, not everyone has a smartphone especially in places like Africa and Asia. Nokia still sales millions of Symbian based phones to those markets, especially India and China.

"The Asha line of smartphones sold 9.3 million units during Q1, not counting Asha series feature phones. By comparison, Nokia shipped 4.4 million Lumia smartphones during the same period. The Asha line of smartphones are generally aimed at emerging markets and shows that Nokia is doing well in these emerging markets."

That's not B.S., market share does have a lot to do with it, but it's not the only factor and viruses for OSX and iOS are on the rise. Apple even dropped their mantra of no viruses last year from their site. Macs are still one of the best platforms though for online activity, top being Linux or FreeBSD but people still need to practice good security habits. You can't just say Macs are safe and leave it at that.

Apple's virus's and malware are increasing?  Really?  From what to what?  From 10 to 12?  Seriously, back your statements up with PROOF.  Where is YOUR PROOF?  That Forbes article is NOT PROOF.  What would be VALID PROOF? A third party research paper from a company that monitors malware threats for various platforms.    That Forbes articles is, how should I say,   BS.  Forbes has been really going down in terms of quality of writing.  Too many IDIOTS writing articles for that magazine.  I prefer to see it from a research company like F-secure, McAfee, etc. that monitors malware.  Please show me a recent research document showing any serious trend.  If you are talking about an increase from 10 to 12 over the last 10 years, that's nothing serious.  The only recent threats were  Flash and Java based which is NOT OS X specific.

Relic, Symbian phones are not very popular compared to iOS.  WOW, they sold 9.3 during Q1?   It said "The Asha line of smartphones sold 9.3 million units during Q4, not counting Asha series feature phones."   Where did it say Q1?  It said Q4.

With that said, Apple sold that many in 3 days after the iPhone 5S and 5C announcement.    Get a grip, Symbian phones represents a VERY small market share, but it holds second place for malware according to f-secure labs as of this report.  http://www.f-secure.com/static/doc/labs_global/Research/Threat_Report_H1_2013.pdf   It's a 5MB file, so give it about a minute or so to download.  Symbian has about 600 types of malware total,  Android has about 800 malware total, iOS has 4 total since inception.

Actually, they only read what they want to and jump to conclusions without any empirical evidence.  Typical of scared Windows/Android users afraid of losing market share to Apple.  Another words, IDIOTS.  They don't want Apple to be a monopoly, but they want Windows and Android being a monopoly.

You said, "Look at Symbian.  Hardly anyone uses it", I just wanted to say that the statement was incorrect, 9.3 million smartphones with Symbian in Q4 and 14 million in Q1those figures are nothing to squawk at. (I had both articles opened up at the same time and I got them crossed, don't assume you had me for some conspiracy to hinder the facts from you). Yes, the iPhone outsold it, what is your point. I personally don't care about these malware statistics as it doesn't concern me, people are getting them by sideloading these childish games and stupid apps outside of the Play Store to save a few bucks. People who use Android should know that by turning off the security features is a glutton for punishment. They deserve what they get.

What iOS is vulnerable too though is phishing, something just as devious. What causes it is opening things you shouldn't, same as Android but people don't follow safe security habits, both platforms are as secure as the user using them. Though iOS seems better suited for these morons as Apple doesn't allow/trust people to do a lot of things other mobile platforms do, like side-load apps or change individual app permissions,.

The Charlie Miller quote MaestroDraven was referring to was from 2009 (http://www.dailytech.com/Hacker+Apples+Snow+Leopard+Protections+Weaker+Than+Windows+7s/article16273.htm), before Lion implemented ASLR properly in 2011 (see http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/07/21/mac_os_x_lion_security/).

Of course Apple doesn't allow/trust people to do a lot of things, they have what's called EXPERIENCE.  Something Google lacks.  Google is DUMB when it comes to setting up a platform.  Probably the only platform on the market where the OEMS don't have the latest version of the OS the day you buy the hardware.  DUMB.  Actually, it's beyond DUMB.  Only people that have no background in IT would ever consider that platform.  If someone has a background in IT and chooses Android, that's a sign of a complete idiot.  If I owned a company, there would NO tolerance for that platform.  PERIOD.  Can't even get security patches/bug fixes in a timely manner that's been released by the hardware mfg?  DUMB.  REAL DUMB.  BUt it seems as though too many people got suckered into that one through a LOT of marketing hype and sheep mentality.

Again, Symbian is NOTHING but a failing OS.  Remember Nokia got bought out by Microsoft so whatever Symbian phones are being sold, it's got a finite amount of time until Microsoft completely STOPS producing and supporting it.  So, say farewell to Symbian.

Relic,  According to the article listed above, they only sold 500,000 phones for Q1 2013.  NOT 14 Million as YOU stated.
