Wow, I like that look. Actually I wish all Apple hardware looked that industrial and bad-ass. It oozes serious functionality out of every vent. I dig it.

Let's hope the emphasis was on the inside and not the outside. A rackmount server should be cheap and powerful; not pretty. I love the iMac but it is a whole different market. I would rather see Apple make money on it than have some underpowered server that looks beautiful.

I think Kurt is right, although it's nice to have a sleak machine, We want cheap power. And I believe that is exactly what we are going to get. Look at apple's most recent hardware offering. The eMac, remove the 17" display and oops that's about the size of a 1U rack mount. The cheapest eMac is $999, remove the 17" display, assuming Apple's quantity discount, $200 off that, remove the CD drive, $30, modem $20, speakers and amp $15, Rage IIc vs. Nvidia $30. I think that's about all you can remove, total it up. $295. That $295 hopefully buys you Gigabit ethernet, more ram, and possibly a faster yet smaller drive.

My pricing probobly is alittle off, but about right. I'm sure that this is a clear case of repurposing of hardware, iMac G4, eMac, and now rMac, all within a few short months of one another.

They don't. It's much bigger on the 'Books and PowerMacs than it is on the iMac.

Umm, most of you guys have absolutely no clue about rackmounts. A few do, but for the most part...

Pretty is not important, small and functional is. Smaller does not mean cheaper. What some companies pack into a 1U case is pretty impressive. And they charge for it. Don't look for less than $2K. If it is less I would be shocked. These boxes are designed to be money makers for those selling them. If Apple does this right, this could make a LOT of money for them and help them sell tons of machines. Working in a very large data-center (over 500 servers production, over 200 staging, over 50 QA and over 50 Dev) I see many machines go through. As was stated earlier, only the SGI boxes are "pretty looking". The rest are plastic nightmares.

Uhm looks like at least 2U. Bummer. Can't Apple get it right _once_ lately?

Why are there no labels on the front plate if the small holes are LEDs? And why is the top section asymmetric? the rectangular portion does not seem to make sense at all. No keylocked service door? Will it have the monitor jack on the back?

dumbass. it was a little graphic at WWDC that was on screen for .5 seconds. You and no one else with the exception of Bodhi maybe knows anything more than apple is going to release a rackmount.

that picture means shit and any asshole can see that the sides are chopped off and its a picture of the center of it so you have no idea what the front looks like. it may not even be a picture of it. just a genereic case with an apple on it to get the idea across of a rackmount

Who cares if it's pretty or not...does it have redundant cooling, redundant power supplies, what about processor support, memory limits, etc. People in the market for servers DO NOT CARE how pretty it is!

Here's one of my racks ;-)

I'll agree, you're mostly right. But some of them do. Again, look at SGI. Apple will release a decent looking one, because it's Apple. I'd say it'd damage their corporate culture if it didn't. It's their mantra: "We make good looking easy to use computers."

If they send something out that looks like crap, it will signal a break from this, and they'll lose a little of their ethos.

Also, the prettier the computer, the more powerful it looks. From the pic above, compare the Dell to the generic cases at the bottom. Notice how much more significant and professional the Dell looks in comparison? If Apple makes something that looks sexy, people will associate it with that. They'll basically ride SGI's coattails as "Good looking servers are made by good companies"

Those "generic" cases at the bottom look far better than the Dell to me. Metal cases look more professional than plastic cases IMO, and they are also more durable looking and more functional.

You sound like an awfully vain person if you really believe this crap about looks being so important.

Er.. aren't those the UPS? The top beige box is an APC Smart-UPS Rackmount.
