New PowerMacs almost certain at MWNY...
Check out this blurb! Who know's what form/shape the new PowerMacs will be in...but don't you agree this looks very promising for a big overhaul? Something's up!!

Just a guess.
The fact that the discounts work with other promotions makes this basically a price break, so I think Apple is getting ready for something that will have a depressive effect on Powermac sales.....

It's going to get interesting from here on in.
Gee, guess those out of date Powermacs just aint selling...
Hint to Apple: offer something competitive.

When was the last time Apple did that?

While I think there will be new PowerMacs at MWNY, I would say that the "depressive effect" isn't necessarily something new. The PowerMacs sold respectably in their first quarter and I think the numbers are dropping off now that they've been out a quarter. I expect that the dual 1 GHz is the only strong seller because it is so much better than any other Mac out there and for not much more money. The other two models don't have enough differentiation from the iMac and PowerBook to warrant their price. Unfortunately, I don't think conclusions about the new servers can be drawn from the new rebates. I love the tension.

Come to think of it, the TiBook was a big change for Apple also. But they've been set back often and for too long, like from '94 to '97 with the 601/603/604 based machines, and in '99 to '00 with the stalled G4s. Perhaps we are seeing a new beginning for Apple? Will they pick it up and make up for lost time?

This isn't impossible or even unprecidented. Other companies have skipped a generation of chip development before, and caught up or even jumped ahead in the process (pun intended). Sometimes it just doesn't make sense to try and match blows with your opponent -- you just have to take a couple of lumps while you get ready to really sock it to 'em. This is especially true if your opponent has a lot more money. It may not happen at MWNY, and it may not be from Motorola.
The G4 also isn't as far behind as everyone seems to go on and on about. Bump the clock rate 50% and support DDR on a 133 MHz bus and it'll be competitive enough to carry Apple another 6-12 months. They'll still be behind the 8-ball, but they should be able to at least maintain their current sales with such a machine. A few more tweaks to the chip and it could even shine (extra FPU, IP, larger internal caches and buffers). Following up with the rumoured G5/"RapidIO G4" may give them some more architectural advantages over the x86 market. Making high end graphics cards available more promptly than in the past (and getting those OpenGL enhancements in there) will ensure better parity with the x86 machines too.
i remember an article in playboy on it...

For people more familiar with hardware, I have a question... how much performance increase would the DDR have on the Power Mac?
That guess has been around since MWNY last year (minus the 333 DDR ram). Besides any anonamus source can write in (just like me e-mailing MOSR about IBM producing the new G5's ).
<strong>Macrumors posted a story from an anonymous source that new PM would be 1 GHz, 1.2 GHz, and Dual 1.4 GHz, DDR 333, 60/80/120 GB hard drives, at $1599, $2299, $3299.

That's far too much of a leap for Apple. More likely is:
1.000 GHz G4, 1.133 GHz G4, dual 1.200 GHz G4
266 Mhz DDR (133 MHz system bus)
Same bus speed, but faster DDR RAM. All in all, it will be a totally uninspiring upgrade that deepens the waters Apple treads in.

Playboy? has articles?
(A) Keeps them competive with servers
(B) Allows for an iMac update at MWNY
(C) Continues the ~2 week apart product rollout schedule.
The biggest reason that I can see that would prevent them from doing this is the timetables on unfinished features. If there's nothing else that'll be ready for MWNY, I see them rolling them out sooner.

*sigh*
The pessimism is tiresome. The fact is you have no more of a ****ing clue than any of us. Of course, if you are conservative in your "predictions", and something disappointing comes out, you were right, and you can say, "Apple is doomed, see, I told you so." Then you get to call everyone who was optimistic Apple-zombies, and make some snide RDF reference. But if something good does come out, you can say, well, that suprised me, then start picking nits to build up the big "Apple is doomed" thing again.
I don't get what the deal is in the Mac community these days. For some reason it's now hip to be down on Apple. I'll admit that Apple is quite a ways behind, hardware-wise. But that doesn't make me down on them. For example, I like the SJ Sharks, right? They played the Avs today and won by a narrow margin. If they lost the game, I wouldn't have said, "the Sharks will keep disappointing us." I'll say, there's always next season.
That's what it's like, man. It's like we're at a game, rooting for Apple, right? And people like you (there's alot these days, sorry to single you out) are coming to every game sitting on Apple's side saying Apple's gonna lose and all the people around you are mindless fanboys for rooting for Apple. If you hated Apple so much, why do you keep coming to every ****ing game?

You got it right there mate - Apple is the company we all love and i'm sure they are doing all they can - have faith all, wintels suck and macs rule because speed is not the only thing that means something - passion and creative flair go along way. Who wants to be a pc clone zombie - they can keep all there crashes and hardware and software incompatible problems - mac os X is the os of the future and just thank your lucky stars you have a cool machine that runs it. even if it's mhz is half that of joe soap next door - i can wind up a ford little piece of shite with some nitro and turbo but is that better than a well engineered ferrari, i know what i would be driving.
Rejoice for they shall hit a wall soon and then macs superior architecture will make them surpase their sorry quest for rapid mhz speed
<strong>Well, if they offer DDR rackmounts next week (as many expect), then everyone KNOWS that the Powermac will get a DDR motherboard in short order, and suddenly, Apple has a lot of inventory on hand that is in need of being cleared out.....
Just a guess.
