Using that logic you can trace any blame back to anyone you like, the people to blame are easily identifiable in each of these chains. Either it's the manufacturer of the hardware or it's the retailer/carrier of the phone. Google does have certain requirements for which version you are permitted to ship with a phone, but they would find it hard to strongarm manufacturers into agreeing to a contract for updates, especially when they might be powerless.

This is the nature of the open/closed model of phone hardware. I'm sure Google would love a manufacturer to release a top quality SOC with completely open specs and drivers, but that just isn't going to happen any time soon.

I'm still waiting for an iOS 7 version that:

    1) doesn't crash when using bluetooth keyboards

    2) doesn't screw up my album artwork with using iTunes Match

I seen a new android phone dialer on Light Reading that will show a spam rating for incoming phone calls, called the T-dialer. Hopefully Apple will get something like that soon. Phone call spam/scam is becoming a huge problem. It's not apple's fault.. but a tool in iOS that would show if a call is a known spammer would be great.

"potentially critical"? Really? This is not a potential. All safari implementations are open to man-in-the-middle attack! This is not potential, it is huge.

Google has the power. Most Manufacturers aren't creating their own versions of Google services so they have to license them from Googs. And with that license, Googs can dictate terms. You think the manus will run to Windows Mobile?

Googs doesn't do this simply because it's no benefit to them. Android 1.X will still deliver ads as well as they to for 4.X.
