you cant in iChat, you need to use AIM's client
and I also would like iChat to stop quitting in the middle of my conversations!!!
Away messages that work would be a plus too, along with the ability to have an unlimited (and sortable) buddy list
but there really is no point in complaining about it here... but of course, there is no iChat feedback page... stupid apple... one for every program except the ones that need it the most...
1) Support for as many formats as possible, with a plugin architecture for third party options. (icq and irc head my list)
2) Pseudonyms for .mac subscribers. Instead of 'username@mac.com'
3) .mac powered 'rooms'. Hey, come on over to 'myusername@mac.com' and chat about xyz. There's quirks in most all of the 'Servers'. Apple has the development muscle to swat this sort of problem.
4) Everything should be applescriptable. Just think of the AI opportunities
Good suggestions so far. There's a million I could list so here's a few more off the top of my head.
Dragging file into a chat window or onto someone in your buddy list should send that file to the person. Dragging files to the input carrot isn't intuitive enough especially since the window needs to be active first. (sometimes)
Minimized windows could use a bit of work. If there is a problem with someone's buddy icon, then you get a completely transparent dock item. Also, an iChat badge or some form of border should be added to these minimized buddy pics. That way, minimized chat windows would have some form of quickly identifiable visual unity. Currently, they look very out of place in my otherwise beautiful dock.
The transition from a floating translucent window to a full sized brushed metal window should be worked out better. The current implementation just doesn't seem to respond as users expect, leading to extraneous clicks and unexpected results.
I want the option to have the iChat icon bounce when I get a reply until I click on that window. The default sounds are so subtle that I often don't know when someone has replied to me.
I do like the ellipses, and I understand why they're there. What I don't like is how they disappear if the person you're chatting with deletes everything he started typing to you. How to annoy someone: Get into a chat with them, and repeatedly type one letter, then delete it. On their computer, the ellipses will appear and disappear, and the chat window will alternately scroll down to make room for them and back. If the ellipses stayed on the screen for say 5 or 10 seconds after someone deleted an entire line, that would cut down on the scrolling weirdness. iChat 2.0 should be smart enough to know you made a typo or changed your mind and want to type something else.</strong><hr></blockquote>
The ellipses denotes when you're typing something... if you have nothing in the box then it shouldn't display one... Otherwise, you would remove its functionality!

I think what mlnjr is trying to say is that it is ANNOYING to have the iChat window scroll up and down rapidly as someone is typing a response, but constantly deleting what they have written. I agree with him, it would be nice if the elipses didn't go away until five or ten seconds after someone deleted the text they inputted.
Using your argument there shouldn't be elipses after someone types a sentence and stops without sending it because they AREN'T typing, but the elipses remain as long as there is text in the input field.
WANTED: Ultra-secret member of Doomsday Cult to write a hack to allow iChat to work with MSN Messenger. Mac users are, or better or worse, amazingly adaptive when it comes to MAKING things port- usually at the chagrin of lawyers and CEO types who want to control ALL technology (read: M$FT)
I wish that people would really support others who do freeware and donationware, et al. That is the community where such a haq would come from.

And what does text in the input field represent? Someone's errant message? Rarely. It represents that someone is in the process of typing another person a message. Deleting that text signifies that the person no longer types another person a message. In fact, he starts out from scratch. What you're trying to do is to remove that function so that in times where the person starts typing again, you don't have to look at the elipses going away and coming back again. What will happen is when someone honestly deletes something with no intention of typing again- the person on the other end will think he or she types for 5-10 seconds longer than what she has. That's totally unacceptable. Under what resolution do you run iChat... 800 X 600?

I run iChat under 1152x768.
Why is it "totally unacceptable" for the elipses to stay up 5 seconds longer while it is okay for the elipses to stay forever if one person simply types the letter "a", for example, and then walks away from their computer?
How about this: Apple simply has "elipses preferences" in the next version of iChat... that way people like you who are very opposed to the idea of elipses being there when no text is actually in the input field can keep it the old way?

also universal webcam support as long as both parties have Quicktime 6 installed (Mac and PC)
