What the present offerings say about MWNY

in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
from what i see Apple are beginning to play their cards

iBook: 100Mhz bus, XS: 133Mhz bus, PM: 133Mhz bus

iBook: 512Kb L2, XS: 256Kb, PM: 256Kb

XS: 2MB DDR RAM L3, PM: 2Mb DDR RAM L3

XS: 2GB DDR RAM, PM: 1.5GB PC133 SDRAM

iBook: AGP 2X, XS: AGP 4X, PM: AGP 4X

XS: ATA-100, PM: ATA-66(?)

from this, I can only predict the following for MWNY:

New Powermac G4!!

new case

1.4Ghz G4 (G5-ish additions, maybe 0.13)

1MB L2 + 4MB L3 cache

4GB DDR RAM

266Mhz bus (not THAT fast, but will suffice)

Hypertransport

Gigawire HDD system

AGP 8X

etc etc

and hopefully a new mouse and keyboard for the new case.

but that's just me

G

Seeing the "nice but not spectacular" updates we've had in the laptops, I've got a feeling that once new, kickin towers appear, the next uprgrades for all the other machines will be very nice indeed.

Although I have to admit that a 1.4ghz would be nice this seems realistic. Though I would be (as would anyone here) happy over a 1.4ghz I wont get my hopes up too high for now. A slight price drop would be cool as well.

You nailed the iBook specs. Perhaps you're correct about the Powermacs in July, too.

What do you think Apple will do enclosure-wise?

No dualies ???? New enclosure ????

I really don't think 1.4 is all that unreasonable. It's a 40% clock increase, and I imagine some stages would be added to the pipeline (maybe 10-stage?) in the redesign to take advantage of a faster FSB.

Along with new towers will come a new price tag. A brand new logic board and CPU architecture means lots of R&D money to make up for. Expect prices on towers to go North before they go South.

i didn't exactly "nail" it per say....

i thought Apple was going to go 700Mhz across the board. Oh well, close enough.

Ah yes dualies....well, ive read over at Ars tech. that dualies can have a problem communicating with DDR, or something to that effect. Im sure Apple has it undercontrol and will offer some sort of Dualie system in July. (might be BTO though, just a pre-warning)

    Enclosures....

well, logic would say that we are getting close to a new enclosure. But what it looks like or anything is way beyond me.

i would also like to take a second and address why Apple won't release a 1.4Ghz G4.

Lets assume that the 7470 tops out at 1.4Ghz. Much like the 7400 topped out at 500Mhz. Lets look at two possible roads that apple could take.

    1.)

assuming Motorola could crank them out fast enough, Apple could release a 1.4Ghz G4 in July. And we would all be happy little mac users. But then what would happen 6-7 months down the road when we start demanding faster G4's? Apple would be stuck waiting for Motorola to work out its next design G4 and then wait some more for it to Fab. This could quickly turn into the 500Mhz drought all over again.

    2.)

Apple releases a 1.26Ghz G4. Most of us are happy. then 6-8 months down the road when we demand more speed, Apple can upgrade the tower to a 1.4Ghz G4.

by going down road 2, Apple is giving Motorola well over a year to design and fab the next generation PowerPC chip. (and Motorola needs all the time they can get) By going down road 1, Apple is only giving them 6 months.

So all of you wishing for 1.4Ghz G4's are just plain out of luck....sorry

I get teh feeling that these speed-ups of the announcements and lines will incicate a large jusp comming... these things are not get it out of the way' updates... I think that the lines will take off soon. AND I think that Apple is crunching with their devellopers on the new Powermac. Shipping their other products and then bringing that staff on board to the PM project in order to meet a MWNY deadline.

The 7500 is rumoured to be around by January.

    I'm guessing that will be 1.2 - 1.6 mhz G4.

Check out the Register web site and nose around.

They, like stuff on this board? Rumours...

    MWNY:

    PowerMac @ 933Mhz, 1Ghz, Dual 1.2Ghz

NVidia GForce 4Ti across the board AGP4

    no ram changes

    no storage changes

    Minor Case revision

    OS X 10.2 (whoop de doo . . .)

    everything else the same

    way beyond . . .

Yeah. Given the ibook 'bump' then the 'power' mac bump looks ominously set up for a big disappointment to 'G5' toting dreamers like myself.

Slowest powermac is going to be 1 GHz....high end is the mystery. The G5 probably won't be ready until MWSF, so we will be stuck with some lame G4 speed bump. But at least Apple will probably update the Powermac's mobo to full DDR support.

    unfortunately i am an optomist.

with all the tech they pumped into the Xserve, i fail to believe that they won't surpass that in the PM. While i hear your argument for not releasing the 1.4, why wait till MWNY to simply release a new mobo, new system bus, new everything and then put in .. wait for it .. 1.26Ghz? apple would be the laughing stock (as if they weren't already) and we would not be satisfied at all.

but then again, this is just my optomism brimming forth like the fountain of joy .. *harps and violas playing in the background, beer flowing like .. .wine and nubile women dancing around in flowing transparent dresses* <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

As if 4 MB of L3 per CPU wasn't unlikely enough, it is even more unlikely if we are to be getting DDR main memory.

Again, AI members lead the way in being disappointed at reality. Keep in mind that MWSF in January is the big show, not MWNY in July. The new chip design was only released a few months ago.

So, 20%-30% speed bumped g4's, price drops, maybe SuperDrive 2, DDR RAM and Jagwire.

Apple has to have something to bang in January, and that would be a new Powermac. Until then, the company is actually doing quite well on it's own.
