You know, since the initial introduction of the first G4 PowerMacs. all the MacWorld keynotes have been disappointing.

I certainly hope that Apple comes up with something big for this one but I'm not holding my breath.

If you look at the products updates for this year it becomes pretty obvious that the PowerMacs are going to be updated at this show.

As far as specs go, forget about the G5. Not gonna happen. We'll see basically the Xserve motherboard with faster G4's (1.2Ghz on the upper end) and a new case. Nothing more.

We'll get Jaguar, anyone can predict that.

Probably a speed bump for the new iMac (1Ghz on the high-end, 933 for the mid range)

Hey, I'll be excited if they come up with something better but this what I'm anticipating. Its realistic and obvious. If Apple does come out with a G5 is not going to be the G5 that everyone has been predicting. It would most likely be a faster G4, just rebranded for marketing purposes (don't forget, the first Pentium 4 was a marketing ploy, it was slower than the Pentium 3).

also, couldn't apple wait on powermac updates/revisions until seybold? i mean, that IS the high-end über-mac-geek event of the year (aside from wwdc, of course). doesn't seem like the right venue for consumer-level announcements, so they may want to hold off on powermacs until then.

then again, didn't they announce the firt ibooks at seybold? if so, that blows my theory out of the water...

also, remember that OS X waited until seybold, the absolute last day of summer, before release. so jaguar is by no means guaranteed for MWNY.

Apple is going to announce that despite 10 years of dedicated work on PowerPC by Apple, Motorola and IBM the whole thing is a dead end technologically speaking.

Specifically mentioning Junkyard Dawg and matsu Steve Jobs will announce that Apple will totally drop the whimpy G3 and G4 PowerPC processors in favor of x86, specifically AMD.

After all everyone knows how much faster AMD is compared to the G4 and how many PeeCees ship with AMDs vs. Pentium IVs.

Apple switch to x86 because the OS X transition is now complete and they have secretly kept an x86 version of the full OS X in the works since day one.

Apple will also announce since they are now running only on x86 that there is no need to make their own CPUs as you can buy much cheaper hardware from DELL and Compaq and even Gateway while they still exist.

Even though you wont get FireWire without a PCI add-in card or SuperDrives in much of anything, or all of your peripherals will not work as they did at the beginning of the OS X switchover, you can at least get a $499 Compaq PeeCee with a SoundBlaster card and Intel AGP graphics that might work as well as a new iMac (with FireWire, SuperDrive, powered speakers, extra USB port, high speed Ethernet all built in) after being upgraded with $300 worth of PCI cards to make it even.

Apple's stock will immediately add 30% as analysts all say "I told you moving to x86 was the only way to grow market share."

Adobe and Microsoft roll out secret x86 versions of their main products that all run as fast or faster than the PowerPC versions on OS X.

Everyone in the Mac world scratches their head and wonders what Universe this is and who this Steve Jobs fellow is.

JunkyardDawg and matsu dance for joy as they can now get cheap crap hardware free of the Motorola tyrany (without realizing none of their stuff works with OS X on x86, or that cheap PeeCee hardware must be substantially upgraded to be comparable to the iMac even).

Welcome to the 21st Century - a world free of alternative technology and innovation!

Here's how I figure the MWNY situation?

PowerBook and iBook will not be updated at MWNY. The TiBook may get a bump in September or October, and the iBook may get a G4 in January, but they're still a ways of, so we'll move on.

The iMac is due for a bump and a price drop. Probably a Ghz G4 on the top end, bigger hard drive, nothing spectacular. Price back to original ($1,299 - $1,499 - $1,799) or maybe a little lower. The iMac bump may come before or after MWNY, but probably not at MWNY.

That leaves the PowerMac for NY. This is obviously the worst value in Apple's Product line, so an overhaul is necessary. What can we expect?

Sure things - DDR ram, faster G4, bigger hard drives.

This is hardly an overhaul. So I expect we'll also see?

Much faster G4s (7470), faster bus (166Mhz double pumped?), new I/O (Firewire 2?), better audio I/O

Offer those machines in dual configs for reasonable prices, and I think the PowerMac is no longer the black sheep of the Mac line.

But wait, they can't just show one machine at NY, what else is there? I think the one more thing will be a new digital device. maybe the long rumored tablet or maybe a camera. i think a new iDevice is almost a given for NY.

MWNY - New G4 (revved or full update?) there are way to many rebates that expire in July for this not to happen. We'll see the on-die cache go up, 1 MB for the pro line? Sounds reasonable if they can put 512 on a Laptop chip and keep it cool and efficient. Speed bumped to... what is a good multiplier .. 10x? 1.33 topend, midrange 1.1, and 1 Ghz lowend. Another 5.25 drive bay opening and new ram?

Ahh new ram but not much performance, but who does see alot of performance? Pentiums are growing amazingly fast, but are people seeing anything on there desktop from having 400 more Mhz at the processor? Yes a number for geeks who run Macbenchesk stuff and say woooo... sad that they stopped making MacBench But real world nahh my email screams across the internet to my friend in Australia just as fast from a 233 p2 (girlfriends) as it does from a 1.7 Ghz P4(work), and the typing is just as slow and choppy..

But my Mac (Sawtooth 450) is my computer and it plays the games released well and for the pro stuff i can photoshop at the speed of my creativity with it. I can't process a huge image or video as fast as a dual gig or an XP 2000+ but i can use all my apps, restart less, lock up less, get support, and dream of G5's as if they were the next Microwave (anyone else remember not having a microwave to nuke stuff?) I want Apple out in front becuase i am a confirmed MacFanatic in a PC IT world, but i am going to buy them and try to get them in where i work whether they release a 2 Ghz G5 Pentium killer or a 1.33 Ghz Pentium "crusher" so bring on the keynote.

Oh and the iMac gets a 17" flat screen on the topend.

I think the powermacs will get a MB bump (166 mhz bus) DDR ram, firewire 2 (800mbps). As noted before, the economy still is shaky and Steve said he doesn't expect it to fully recover until late 2002. So anything with brand new tech will be scrapped until then (Rapid IO, G5, DDR333, firewire 2 optical connect, ect.). So the next "big" MW is MWSF 03, or the G5 might come out at a event near MWSF (think 99 DV iMacs).

I don't really think there'll be 17" iMacs. Look at the current line. If you subtract $599 (the cost of the Apple 15" Studio Display), you get $800,$1000,$1300, which, I believe, was the pricing structure for some old iMacs. Since the new iMacs don't really offer anything else new (not counting stuff like G3->G4 as this is a Moore's law type thing-a G4 now will be about as cheap as a G3 a couple years ago), the added cost for the LCD iMacs seemd to be the full cost of the Studio display. No what happens if you at $400 (the cost of the 17" Studio Display). )I am assuming that the 17" iMac would be the high-end, which seems reasonable.) You get $2300. I don't think Apple will release an iMac which is that expensive.

    Anyone remember MWSF 2000?

No new hardware....no nothing...except the genie effect demo

Maybe this time we will see some new minimizing effects in Jaguar and that's it

Sorry....I love to add oil on fire

Do not forget that that expo is where Steve Jobs took the reigns of Apple as the permanent CEO. Steve also made an amazing "Apple Innovates" speech within his keynote speech. The MWSF'00 keynote speech may not have been chock full of new hardware (or any) but it was a turning point in Apple's history.

My guess is that SJ announces to the world being gay. As if that's not juicey enough, he introduces his new partner, Mr. Gates. He even announces the wedding, taking place in The Netherlands during the next MW. Only question: should I cancel my journey to New York for being able to attend the wedding, for which I will certainly be invited of should I go to NY after all to see the vice-CEO of Apple introducing the G5?

Life is full of pleasant surprises and hard decisions.

here's what steve needs to do, and soon...

he needs to convince me, the overseer of a budget for ten studio macs, why i should bother to upgrade to new boxes from our 450 MHz G4 Sawtooths (Sawteeth?)

right now, all those machines run all of our major applications and OS X just fine. not wicked fast, but not intolerably slow either. add faster drives, max the ram, up the video cards to ati radeons or nvidia cards, and we'll be set for at least a year or two more at minimal cost and studio upheaval.

so that's what steve has to overcome in the pro market these days with an announcement soon.. there just isn't THAT much difference between the current crop of towers and those they sold two years ago that a few well-placed upgrades couldn't help.

This is based on an invalid assumption: the new machines could potentially cost less to build than the old ones. Simpler motherboards (i.e. no big wide MPX bus, higher level of integration, etc). Furthermore, if they are really really screaming fast this could stimulate a whole new wave of purchases, driving sales way up. If they are ready, I think they'll ship them -- last year was the year of holding off, now is the time to throw everything but the kitchen sink into the market.

20 GB would be good, of course, but a remote control would be even better: you could control your precious iPod without it leaving your interior pocket or you bag and without you having to take of your gloves.

I'll be in New York for the MacWorld, if Apple comes out with a remote control, I'll leave with an iPod for sure (I live in a land of long winters?).

Apple needs to break out of this crazy MacWorld Expo cycle.

Everybody's always saving their pennies for the next MacWorld so they can buy Apple's new killer device (which never quite arrives at the rumor monger level). Apple always needs the pennies now. They're in business to sell the stuff their making, not get everybody all worked-up over what they've got coming in 6 months (and then again 6 months later, etc., etc.).

Two "we got nuthin'" MWNY's in a row would certainly help with this. Not holding on to product announcements until the next scheduled keynote is also good. It isn't and shouldn't be Apple's job to make each Expo keynote an earth-shatteringly exciting event - just a nice 6-month recap is all we need (should need).

Just keep pumpin' out the good stuff on a continuous basis rather than in twice-yearly lumps. I think this is their new strategy and it is a good one.

I think this is quite true. Also, I think it is a GOOD thing for Apple to be doing. This industry is WAY to focused on technology for the sake of technology. Apple of late is much more focused on what we can do with technology.

In addition, I agree with the posts that say Apple is spreading out their product announcements. This too is a wise change for Apple...for many reasons. This probably means that MW is going to become less of the BIG show it has been in the past. Then maybe we can all get back to work and stop fretting about Apple product announcements.

This topic may have been redundant, but this individual idea needed to have a place of its own. Yes, I have seen this mentioned in other topics. Yes, I am new. But does that make this observation any less important?
