I know someone that works in one of the Apple retail stores down here, and he says they received a bunch of the eMacs last week. Looks like they might start selling them through the stores.

That's BULL! It's an education product! Why sell it throught the stores? To who! Steve already has a lot to answer for, with his whole "the CRT is dead at Apple" statement last year. Now they'll be selling them again at the stores. I don't think so!

I apologize in advance for the sarcastic tone of this post. It's just that this thread is comical at best.

Despite the lack of speed increase between the initial P4s and existing P3s, there was a major architectural difference between the two chips. Likewise, it was not just a marketing ploy as you call it. The same is true for the G4/G5. At the very minimum, a "G5" based product will be based on the newer "BookE" architecture and will likely support RapidIO amongst other things. This notion that Apple will call speed bumped G4s, G5s is baseless and laughable.

Also, I love the folks that "predict" .13u speed bumped G4s (around 1.3GHZ) with DDR, speed bumped iMacs, demo / release of Jaguar, etc. and somehow think they are clairvoyant and that other rumor sites are copying them.

Hell, Motorola has already stated they are moving the G4 to the Hip7 process in the Maccentral article. Journals such as the Microprocessor report have suggested the 1.3GHZ speed is possible. Apple has already shown it's hand with the DDR hack with Xserve. Jaguar has already been demoed at the developers conference, and Apple has gone on record to say that Jaguar will ship this summer. In short, this is just a compilation of facts we already know. No "insider" information is necessary for this information. Further, if another rumor site posts this stuff, they're probably not copying people in this forum as this information is common knowledge!

Further, the people that are expecting "something big" apparently haven't learned their lesson from last years MWNY.

    Sorry for the rant!

I will be at MWNY again this year. I'm also in the market for a high end system. Trust me, nobody wants to see some awesome G5 based killer Mac system than me. Let's just keep our expectations realistic and be happily surprised at anything better than the obvious.

Hey, if they are still having yield issues on the new iMac better to sell a customer something than nothing. And however it turns out, I promise it'll be OK. Now go ahead and untie trhe mouse cord from around your neck and then step down from the chair.... <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

Or they recognize that they havew to sell SOMETHING around $1000 to the general public if they are EVER going to make good on their 'doubling the marketshare' boast.

Sheesh. Most computer sales are made in the sub $1000 area and Apple has.....let me see.....ah, yes, ZERO products that even come close.

If they were really smart, they'd also give the 15" iMac CRT a spec jump and start pumping them out at $700 or less, too.

    That's just dumbassedness all-around.

Apple: several bonus points for design; but zero for sales strategy.

RE: eMacs in the Apple Stores.

If it IS true that they have been shipped in limited numbers, it may very-well be to replace the iMacs in the Childrens section...? Possibly...? Wouldn't they hold-up better under the use of kids...? Just a thought.

I am not claiming to be a know it all, though I have worked at one of the Apple Stores in the Midwest, a store that was very close with Ron Johnson (Senior Vice President of Apple Retail). He would let us know a few tidbits here and there. One of them is that they want to implement education pricing in the retail stores as they are loosing major sales to educators and students this way. Perhaps Steve Jobs will announce this, and this would be considered PR HUGE NEWS material...

OKAY. But I don't understand. The stores ALREADY give the educational price to those that qualify. Where's the difference?

I've seen this before. I keep on thinking, however, that this just isn't that big. I could be wrong. To some this may be the news that drives their existance, but I don't see that warrenting media interviews by Jobs.

Didn't that edu conference (NECC or something) just happen or is about to happen? That would be the prime time to announce this.

    Anyone?

Unless that is something new I am unaware of that ... not something they offered initially when the stores opened... Although they did offer tax deductible for education (or anyone who qualifies), is that what you are referring to?

I'm not expecting anything from MWNY. I will run naked through the streets of Brisbane if Steve even mentions the word "G5".

    cheers,

I'd prefer not to top that, Dawg, though the Sybaritic girl probably could top it in any number of ways....

Also, to be fair, it's easier for dawgs to do what you're describing than for most bipeds. I don't think we need to worry about your show, however. I suspect most of us will be a little underwhelmed by the machines that ship in August (?).

One final thought, Dawg. If there is any cosmic relevance to the title of this thread, then you may need to eat crow (or something else). That long-awaited G5 may just pop up and surprise you.

I don't think any of this suggests that MW will be especially big (it may be, but this isn't evidence that it will be.) I also don't think that we'll see desktops revved at MWNY unless it's to bring something big like a G5 to the game. If it's dual 1.4GHz G4s, they might as well do it in Sept.

I do think that until consumer and business spending start to increase, Apple will sandbag it's tech. If G5 was available now, they'd be stupid to ship it - nobody is buying. Better to keep improving it so that when they *really* need to ship, they can and really get people's attention. So long as they turn profits, they're going great in this economy and they don't need big tech to do that. Apple is taking the long view. Y'all might hate that, but it's the prudent move.

If I had to guess for Tues, it'd be the licensing rumor. Apple is doing a great job for .edu right now and that'd play in nicely.[/QB][/QUOTE]

I think you are right on the money. One needs to look at the economy and business cycle as a whole. We may see a speed increase for the PowerMac, but it will be minimal at best.

Wait, so in a bad economy, it's better NOT to give consumers reasons to buy your products?

That doesn't make any sense. If Apple had a G5 powermac ready to ship, then they would do it, regardless of the economy. All you need to do is look at the new iMac to see that Apple isn't going to sit on a great design and wait for the economy to improve, while the profits tank.

If apple were to release a G5-based system at MWNY I would mortgage the house to pay for it. Not that i'd have to, as I've been saving up for ages.

I am consumer. Give me G5 (and everything else).
