anything less than a device that moves me from one dimension to another in a matter of seconds would be a disappointment, with steve hinting towards star trek thats the only logical explination

I can't imagine you'll ever see OS X on a PC, Apple would be giving up it's greatest competative advantage.

At the moment Apple seem to have difficulty optimising the OS for their own hardware (ATI card fiasco for instance, poor modem support etc) imagine how much worse this would get when you put just any old machine into the mix!

and if the mac was cheaper and faster than any pc ?

the osx for pc would be as bait to Pc users to dump their pcs and buy those new , fast and cheap macs....

    cool, don't you think ?

Hmm.. it may be crazy but not THAT crazy - Apple's have been used in some air-/spacecraft due to their reliability and stuff...

Yip, me! But I never liked (and still don't like) the idea of seeing OS X on Intel/AMD. Especially over here in Germany, where the price gap between Macs and other PCs is really HUGE, this could mean that everyone who wants to run OS X will do this on a non-Apple machine. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

May be it just didn't fit onto the site?

Apple should be spending their time improving OSX, not reworking it to run on PC's.

Apple would lose all hardware sales.

Just for the record OS X on Intel is NOT my prediction as to meaning. I think they are going to talk about how the new iMac fits anywhere, and goes anywhere. Of course, that would make it an iBook, but I don't know......

My second choice is more digital device action.

Absolutely agreed...I just CANNOT see ANY Mac OS running on x86 machines...if this is the big deal,

The final thing I'll say is that one place that a PC hasn't gone is onto a Palm device......

    <a href="http://forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=000529"; target="_blank">Apple and Be and Palm</a>, anyone?

    The lights dim.

The projector screens show that clip from Star Trek IV where Scotty picks up the mouse to the original Macintosh and says, "Hello computer?"

    The lights come back on.

Jimmy Doohan (in an old Trek uniform, of course) walks out with the new Mac.

    He says, "Hello computer!"

...and the Mac talks back!!

Now THAT's what I call an idea! Doesn't sound too far away. IBM has been making some great progress in speech recognition technology and Apple seems to have always liked the idea of speech (the good ol' speakable items made it to MacOS X).

So.. voice controlled MacOS? Why not?

They mention it is a PC, of course assuming that each of the hints has been directed towards a product, which means that it is a PC and not some digital device, right? Unless they managed to do something like the iPad where it is a full Mac running OS X in a tablet form factor, but I just do not see that coming out, isn't that what a laptop is for?

Personally I lean more towards there being some sort of revolutionary speed increase. Maybe the G5, but that doesn't mean it has to be at a great clock speed then the Pentium 4, just a lot faster. And those benchmarks on the G5 that were leaked a while back certainly showed this.

At any rate I am hoping for the G5 and not some digital device, Apple has enough things to worry about: improving their hardware, optimizing OS X, getting new users onto the platform, without diverging into an overcrowded PDA (or PDA like) market.

A list that prducts Apple could release relating to their third day quote:

Could it be USB 2.0 and Firewire 2.0 on every Mac? I do not know if another company has done this, but if not, Apple would be the first, right?

Also, it could be a Superdrive on all desktop Macs, but that would be utterly a speculation that is way in the air and would not come true anyway until a year or two.

Faster, I mean way faster mhz, 1.5+ghz. Seems very plausible, but who knows; would be a crowd cheerer and a riot starting event. Apple would have to call in the armed forces to keep people from storming Cupertino.

Way larger HD's an RAM? Would be kind of corny for their title.

Some new iApp?? Also very plausible, but I would not really care. Photoshop 7 prebundled with every Mac??

Mac OS X only or even Mac OS X as the default OS?? Likely.

Larger LCD screens possibly a 25' inch or 30??

    Lets hear some more.

Yes! You're heading in the right direction: revolutionary, blow-us-away, beyond the rumor sites, "where no PC has dared to go before" type of development that only Apple could choreograph. It has to be something COMPLETELY different here!

Now... why a tablet? Why not just a laptop?

Well, why take with you what you don't need? With a laptop you're hauling around your optical drive(s), power-guzzling hard drive(s), processor, and all of those other intricate, delicate, and most notably expensive to miniaturize components. Plus you're carrying around your keyboard and pointing device, in an immobile position, and they can never be changed out. All this adds weight, as well, and takes away from possible BATTERY space! I won't even touch on how portable components are usually a step behind non-portable ones (the SuperDrive is a great example), and portables generally have less room for ports and upgrades and whatnot.

If you're buying an iMac, with the webpad portable tablet display, you know you're getting a desktop. So taking your one computer back and forth to work or a friend's house is already not your goal. So you don't need to lug around that stuff, you can let it stay at your office, where it's central, and where you're used to spending most of your computer/business time anyway. Which you still will, if you so desire.

Now about the tablet. Say you find a recipe you want to try right away; grab the tablet which has been charging on the iMac base all night and whisk it away to the kitchen instead of wasting trees on your next culinary masterpiece. Little Johnny or Anna want to play a game? If they are too young for the keyboard, or you just don't trust them around your ports and slot-loading drives with their crayons and whatnot, grab the screen, and they can draw or play a simple child's game. Want to show your guests your new iMovie or web photo gallery you made with iPhoto? Run in and get your webpad, and bring it into the living room to show them. Navigate by pen if you want to hold it, or if you want to let them pass it around, just use OS X's built in Speech Recognition with the built-in microphone. Want to go play The Sims on your couch instead of that constrictive office chair? No problem. Just lift off the display and you're charged and ready to go. Stylus included.

If it had 10 or even 20 (or even up to 24) hour batteries, which would be more than possible with all of the room it'd have for them, and how it'd basically just be powering the display and an Airport card, it would be perfect. It charges when you set it back on your iMac, which most people would do while they're sleeping anyway. If you need a computer for more than, say, 10 hours straight, but you can't be in your office, you should probably get a portable. But even then, good luck with that kind of battery life!

As for the technical side, the GPU, which would render the OS X GUI and Classic GUI and send all digital/analog signals, would be put in the unit. A few graphics chips would take up little space and use relatively little power; much less than the real processor. Plaintext rendering instructions (window coordinates, GUI events) could be sent over the 11Mbps AirPort connection just like X servers and Timbuktu/VNC type apparati function over the internet, but faster, smarter, and well-optimized by none other than Apple, to be rendered on the Tablet, using relatively little of even AirPort's current bandwidth, when you're not at your desk.

You get the best of both worlds, without hauling around the desktop components. It makes so much more sense, I'd even go as far as to say such a system is "elegant." I hope Apple heads this way, I really do.

So you doon't trust them to not shove crayons up a slot loading drive yet you trust them to use a pointy on a large delicate screen? <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

You know, if it wasn't for the specific reference to the rumor sites (implying that Apple knows, at least to some extent, the kind of things that are bandied about on sites like AI), I would just say that this is pure marketing without any hidden meanings. But that, and the fact that Apple has never hyped a macworld like this in the past, suggests that they must have something pretty darned impressive. Still, I think all this minute analysis of every catch-phrase (as entertaining as it is) is reading way too much into this.

Personally, I would like to know if they are using the word "PC" to refer to wintel machines or to "personal computers" in general. Macs are PCs too, after all.
