You're trying to sound "classy" as if Dolby Digital is great? Dolby Digital Sucks compared to any lossless format (DTS HD-MA, Dolby True HD, etc)- so no need to act like Dolby Digital is so much better than an a/v system simulating it.
If you care that much about audio/video presentation, go pop in a Blu-Ray. That's what I do when it's a movie that deserves top-notch A/V. Not some spare movie off Netflix.
I never said DD was "great", but DD > PCM and there's no arguing that. What's wrong with me wanting DD on Netflix on the ATV back after an absence that is now going on for longer than a month? I pay for Netflix. I bought an Apple TV. Both are capable of DD and DD was working...until the middle of March when Apple's firmware update broke it. The problem should be fixed before features/channels are added.

There's nothing wrong with your wanting that fixed. The other guy is just being a jerk.
The History Channel should really change its name. They rarely have anything but junk on there. Ancient Aliens? Big Rig Bounty Hunters? Swamp People? Are you kidding me? Thank God for The Smithsonian Channel.
What's the point of these Apple TV channels. If I'm a cable subscriber, which I'm not, why would I watch the channel through my Apple TV instead of via the cable channel. Apple TV channels should be alternatives to cable. Apple should be catering to those of us who've cut the cable.
I use the "Disney Junior" app with my kids way more than going to the TV station. So that's really nice.
Also- say you want to watch "American Pickers" (No clue why you would want to watch that, but that is an argument for another day)- you could simply go to the app and watch it instead of seeing what time it comes on.
As to your other point- you essentially think- "Apply should be catering to me". I disagree with that btw- the bulk of their demographic are still cable subscribers- so I'd go for them. I eagerly wait to see what they mention at WWDC regarding the ATV (if they do)

It's because you own several vacation home's but don't want to pay for cable in each of them. IE you're rich, but not that rich. This way you can have your cable programming ala AppleTV.
Anyone remember when the History channel was a history channel? MTV a music channel? Discovery a decent channel?
...and a time when TLC was The Learning Channel before the days of Honey Boo Boo. I watched HCHBB out of morbid curiosity to see what it was all about. I can't count how many times I heard unnecessary references to genitalia, urine, feces, gas, and other gross humor. Do I find parts of it funny? Yes. But, it does NOT belong on the channel it is currently on. The older I get, the more often I find myself listening to NPR and watching PBS.

Same. And I have no problem with a bunch of low brow "reality" shows being made - there is obviously an audience for it. But they should put it on channels that don't purport to be something else.

NO !
Even when they first started they more commercials than music videos. I couldn't believe a channel could run soooooo many commercials before getting back to programming.
I really like this strategy. They're chipping their way around the tv dial. The more channels they get to sign on, the more other channels will feel pressure to sign on. Then as more channels are signed on, they'll start competing with better availability of content, showing things as they air, not just after.
Hopefully Apple is trying to get some exclusivity deals. It would be sad if they did all the work in figuring out the business viability with these channels and then the channel just duplicates their offering on Roku or Amazon the next day.
Internet is becoming more of a utility than a luxury in today's world. I've considered ditching cable and installing a broadcast antenna to cover the larger half of my television viewing habits, but the monopoly the cable companies have - particularly in smaller markets like mine - makes it very unattractive to "un-bundle". I pay roughly $40 for 15 Mbps Internet and $90 for HD digital cable with two TiVos (no premium movie channels). If I replaced cable with an antenna, my streaming would increase which would push me over my monthly bandwidth cap so I'd have to upgrade to a faster Internet package in order to get a larger cap. This upgrade along with the loss of bundling "discounts" would put me paying as much or more per month than I currently do with cable. It's a no-win situation. It doesn't seem right that Internet and television costs me more than electricity and water.

If creative, many people can get around the limitations.
Yeah, they just pirate it. Want Apple to offer a pirated content service?

Cue Soli and a few others talking about how much better things would be if companies actually embraced the torrent format for distribution.

I agree with you- it should be fixed.

Getting around the limitation has nothing to do with Apple or illegal downloading.

and you still have that cable bill with 800 channels that are completely useless. for me (and other non-cable subscribers), this solves nothing.

The first time you don't need to do this, it will actually be newsworthy.

LOL. Is there another country?
Tried activating History channel and it doesn't list Comcast/Xfinity even though I get the History channel through them.
