What is the point of having a cable TV provider when you have Roku or Apple TV? It makes no sense. Why should you have to provide a cable provider login in order to watch content from these channels? Basically, then, the AppleTV and Roku are redundant if you still need your antiquated cable subscription.
Stupid.
One difference is that here you can abandon your cable company's crappy menu system and scheduled programming and replace them with an Apple interface, the ability to hide channels you don't want, and the freedom to watch any episode of any program whenever you want. This also lets you access AppleTV's native content and features interchangeably with TV programming without the awkwardness of switching TV sources and remotes.
I checked these apps or channels out last night. I don't have cable but you can watch quite a bit of full episodes without having to login. There are commercials every so often but tolerable. Vikings season 2 is completely free! Just bought that on iTunes before this came out. I was impressed!
I don't see the point. If I want to watch any of these channels I'll do that on my DirecTV. They've got channels for precocious episodes too. Why watch the same content through my ATV?
Maybe the strategy is to begin to show new content on these channels that are not saddled with the old broadcast agreements. A new show is bought by A&E and they stream it instead of just going through the cable companies.
Because you can travel anywhere and carry it with you.... or, even better, not pay for the service but still have access to it using your parents or other family members' login info....
The trouble is that it's unrealistic. Cable "works" because it bring many niche channels that few watch and the cost are equalized by the big guys. I'd like to have one with noting but financial, food, science fiction and construction but these are supported by ESPN, CNN, FOX, ABC, etc A friend works at Comcast (our monopoly) and explained that one show - Duck Dynasty for example - can support up to half of a network's offerings. We are on track for Google Internet and their TV package is far superior to Comcast though it is not a la carte as everyone wants.
So let me understand this because I am seriously confused.
I own an AppleTV. After realizing I can't watch HBOGo and various other things without a cable subscription, I went to Comcast and worked a deal. I don't use the cable box, just my AppleTV box.
Now I sit down and begin the activation process of all my channels but nooooooo, Comcast isn't included in several of the provider lists.
So I search and search and I find a way around that. Now I'm activated: ABC, Lifetime, History and several others.
But I sit down to watch my favorite show, Vikings Season 2 and it says I can buy the season from iTunes for almost $25? wt..f..

Apple TV is meant as a supplement, not a replacement. Only a few channels have full seasons of previously aired shows available to watch. You have a better chance of catching previous seasons on Netflix than on a network's own app.
This is how I did it. I opened up http://www.history.com/authorize on Firefox and opened History on Apple TV. When I opened H2 on Apple TV, I got a password. I then went back to the computer and entered the code and it worked. I used Optimum. Hope this works for you.

The new "channels" are not appearing on either of my ?TV. Are they broken?
Not if you log in using another family members login info.... that way you don't have to pay
