Why Apple's interested in this poor quality plasticy tat is beyond me. Beats is a fad aimed at the kids with too much of their parent's money rather than being a desirable product like the rest of Apple's lineup.
The only knee jerk reactions here are the defend tim Cook at all costs brigade. This is not the way apple operates. It never kept brands alive ( not in the modern era), it doesn't buy in design skills, it doesn't buy companies for their executive team, it doesn't pay over the odds for a company sold for much less a few years ago, it doesn't replace it's existing tested technology (Apple has streaming and curation) with untested products.
Still not seeing it. Let's see if Apple actually gets a streaming service worldwide in the next year.

I could have sworn Apple bought NeXT. Time will tell if this the right thing to do. Apple buys tech all the time for people, features, etc. this is no different.

Where do we sign to ditch Cook?
And what Company do you run that you know best?????
Google buys robotics, self-driving cars, advanced AI that will create assistants like in movie "Her", life-extension technologies that will extend human lifespan, advanced drones/aeronautics companies that will bring internet to all parts of the world.. and Apple buys urban fashion accessories for $3 BILLION DOLLARS!
Basically, Google buys headlines that pushed their stock price. Notice they are not creating any of this themselves. Let's see if anything you mentioned if functional 10 years from now.
Let that sink in for a bit so you realize how completely rudderless Apple's leadership has become.
Many here hated the idea of a gold iPhone and couldn't fathom that Apple would do anything so 'gaudy' and 'tacky' as it just didn't fit their idea of Apple's culture. The gold iPhone came out and it became the best selling iPhone in the lineup. I suspect this Beats deal will play out in a similar fashion. Cook will drag the overzealous enthusiasts kicking and screaming and in the end Apple will be a better, stronger, and more profitable company then they already are. Now, if Cook shows up at WWDC like in the picture below, then I'd be worried, but until then just relax and enjoy the ride.
Why not. Stylish popular designs that actually sell and make a high margin, a streaming service that actually has the best curation system in the market, and two music industry giants on board for all your music initiative from promotions to negotiations, to insight on pop and urban culture, to music production. Add to that the fact that if having Apple's marketing and design behind them doesn't increase revenue at all it would still pay for itself in two years since they did 1.5 billion last year before getting into streaming. Sounds like a great move. It also lets Cook focus on other things now that there will be a entertainment chief with connections rivaling Jobs and he no longer has to run retail himself.
Okay apple paid 3 billion for beats. If beats sales is 1.5 it will take longer than 2 years to pay for the deal. 1.5 billion is not profit it's total sales. As wise as apple has been with acquisitions I'm going to take a wait and see approach. It may turn out to be a great move.
How do you know it's a bad idea you know nothing about this deal only that Apple bought them????
Because Beats is nothing like Apple. As I stated before, they produce plasticky tat with crap sound reproduction aimed at kids with too much money. Their streaming service is tiny compared to Apple's, and that's their only two businesses. What makes you think it's a good idea? [add excessive question marks as desired]
So glad this is fucking official so the speculation can stop. Personally, I trust Apple's judgement on this, I'm sure they thought through exactly why they'd like to make this acquisition, and until I see evidence otherwise, I will assume it is a good thing. Good to have this book closed before WWDC.
I hate to break it to you, but Ive will be redesigning the headphones and Apple engineers will be reengineering them. Tim just told Apple employees as mush today; it was posted over on 9to5Mac. The Beats brand is solid, now just up the quality and sound and you've the best of both words. Try creating a cool brand for headphones, that's a much harder problem.
Yeah I read that letter and the Beats hardware stuff is rolling up under Schiller, not Ive or Riccio. Also if Beats headphones are so popular now, why do they need to be redesigned? Maybe the people buying them don't want them Apple-fied.

The Beat Goes On
We at Ammunition are absolutely thrilled that Beats—a business, a brand, a collection of products, and a group of friends that we have put so much of ourselves into—is becoming a part of Apple, arguably one of the world’s greatest companies and certainly the most design-led company of our era.
As a studio focused on pushing the limits of what design can do to create new business opportunities, we cannot imagine a more validating outcome. My journey with Beats began with a small meeting in 2006 with Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre at Interscope Records. The incredible impact that the design of Beats has had on culture as a result of our collaboration since that first meeting is still unbelievable to me. I am humbled by the thought that millions of music-loving people proudly wear Beats on streets all over the world.
Over the next few months, the design for Beats will transition away from Ammunition. It’s tough to step down as Chief Designer for a brand I take so much pride in, but it certainly makes it easier knowing we are handing the reigns over to one of the world’s most successful design teams.
Ammunition was founded on the idea that great design plays a powerful role in creating not just new products and brands, but great new business concepts and companies as well. Our team will continue to focus on that daily, and we look forward to continuing our work with clients and business partners, and welcoming the unknown opportunities that are waiting for us out there.
I’d like to take a moment to personally thank Jimmy, Dre, and Luke Wood. In addition to being great design partners, they have been incredible mentors to me over that last eight years, and they have helped me to grow as a designer and as a leader. And thanks to the entire team at Beats for an amazing, rewarding journey. We wish them all the best for their next chapter.

Why do I need to run a company to see that acquiring Beats is a bad idea?
I guess one some what positive way to look at this is the same as BMW buying (mainly in name only)the Mini, seems like an odd fit but ya never know.

Goodbye Steve Jobs and your magical Apple.
Hello to Tim Cook's Apple of 2014: Enter the Thug.
Rest in peace, Good Taste; it was nice knowing you.
