Because the infirm and unhealthy may need more information about their health than the fit.
But the likelihood of them getting that kind of info from a high tech gadget after they have poured their drink is not very likely. Still, you could give one to your granny and if she doesn't use it you got yourself a nice mug.
Why would I want a $500 device when I can use a pay phone?
Why would I want a map on said device when I can use a paper map?
Why would I want to email someone when I can write a letter?
Why would I use a calorie counter to see if I'm in shape or not?
Why would I use a reminder app when I can use post-it notes?
Why would I use a cup like this to upload nutritional info when I can read the label and manually track it?
Because technology has made us all lazy-asses.....get over it. You sound old.
The first one makes no sense - I am not paying $500 for a phone. The notion that an iPhone is a phone is silly. It is called a phone because before the iPhone that is pretty much what you got. If there were no cell phones before the iPhone, would it still be called an iPhone? I doubt it.
Your second question is what I am talking about.
Email is a letter improved.
Too much time on your hands. Anyway, if you use a calorie counter to see if you are in shape you are misguided.
Seriously? Post-it notes?
Cuz your a geek.
I think your logic sucks and this has little to do with laziness
This is "cool" from a proof of concept perspective, but rather silly as is. I can't see how there is a viable market for this product. Now 5 (or 10 or 50) years from now I can imagine that everything one consumes can be coded and logged and be a big breakthrough for diet and fitness, but it's not going to be because everything is passing through a $500 cup or plate.
Given that there are absolutely no technical specs about things like "sensors" and "ranges", and with them making claims like "Can my Vessyl detect the brand of what I drink? -Yes. In most cases, you will see the specific brands and flavors of what you are drinking when you open the app", I'm calling this BS until I start seeing results from it.

not so fast, this seems like its just a lot more effort - washing it out so i can pour my yoghurt in it, then washing it out for my soda from a can - then - well you get the idea. Ohh can't wait to have to remember it when i go out for drinks after work, and to breakfast the next day -
Mark One, Vessyl's creators, say the 13-ounce cup can handle any kind of liquid that people normally drink. It can even analyze thicker liquids, like yogurt and smoothies.
...
Vessyl is available now for pre-order directly from the company's website at a discounted cost of $99. The cups are expected to ship early next year, at which time the price will increase to $199.
i think a blue pill would solve so many issues....
bluetooth enabled, just swallow it. From within your stomach you could send all kinds of calorific data back to an iPhone, also heart rate, breathing rhythm, and conveniently - poop it out in time to change the battery, wash it off, then back in the old tum she goes.....

I am not taking no sh*tty blue pill over and over again.
I only need to use part of my brain to figure out for myself, in real-time, what I'm putting in my body. And it costs me nothing.
I am not sure how this product works, but as with something like accounting software, it's the data input that makes it work, and the manual input is what is difficult. When something like this can input and place the data where it needs to be then it becomes useful.
Connectivity of health tracking devices is going to blow up now that iOS and soon google create frameworks where your drinking cup, blood pressure monitor, all the device we use to track our health, input and place the data automatically where it needs to be. If it is left for people to do it manually most people just won't.

Why do the elderly care? I think the target demographic would be the super self obsessed fitness and diet fanatical nerds out there. Not the elderly.
Because the infirm and unhealthy may need more information about their health than the fit.
You can't do spectroscopic analysis to tell just what is in drinks and know it is accurate unless you can do calibration.
I wouldn't be surprised to find out you need to tell it that you are drinking a "diet Coke" for it to give any half-way decent results.

Their next product is a smart straw, for more fine grained information.

Nice cup, btw.
Haha. And you have to "find" it before you can take it too.
I wonder if Google will buy it so it can spy on even more people… hmmmm.
