Apple exec predicts branded handheld bombshell (sort of!)
Don't know if this has got any coverage on the other side of the Big Pond, but this appeared in today's edition of UK Mac magazine MacUser:
[quote] Jaguar technology hints at Apple handheld device
Reports that Apple is developing a handheld device have resurfaced. Experts believe that Ink, an advanced handwriting recognitiion technology built into Jaguar, the next version of Mac OS X, has been designed to work with a forthcoming Apple product.
Ink is one of the least talked-about features of Jaguar. It will enable text to be input using a stylus, according to Apple, but require an input tablet.
However, sources at Wacom, the main manufacturer of Mac-compatible graphics tablets, said it had not been consulted during the development of Ink, which indicates that Apple is working on its own solution.
Mark Rogers, Apple UK's managing director, could not rule out the possibility that Ink had been developed with forthcoming Apple hardware in mind. "We never do anything without a reason, but that's all I'm prepared to say at this point," he said.

Could PalmOS 5 be the base of this new tech?
<a href="http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/pc/docs/2002/0614/palm08.htm" target="_blank">Look here</a> see how fast OS5 is on a strongarm? look left. I dunno what that is, but for some reason it reminds me of newton.
Apple could do well branding a device and supplying their own custom functionality to a platform with wide market penetration/support that thy don't actually have to spend a lot of effort on themslves. hmmm...
Also look at this: <a href="http://www.alphasmart.com/products/dana_overview.html" target="_blank">the eMate rides again! </a>

. <---so much.
G-News
by-the-by, the thread title seems kind of ridiculous. also, soccer is a ridiculous gaym. p.p.s. phre erin, brit pygs.
Official name is ?Ink?.
?
Ink
Jaguar features advanced handwriting recognition. Graphics professionals will appreciate the ability to input text via stylus instead of switching to the keyboard. You can write directly in Mail messages and TextEdit documents, or use the InkPad to write text and draw sketches before sending them to your favorite applications. Ink requires an input tablet.

Personally, I think that the new iBook probably will become a stylus enabled notebook, and probably used much like the Vadem Clio/Sharp Tripad.
The iBook after all, was once said to be the succesor of the eMate.

Guess what, the wallies at MacUser read MOSR too, they often quote it as a credible source and repeat rumours they find there...
MacUser just put this story together based on that junk at MOSR IMO.

And did MOSR make up the quote from Mark Rogers too?
[QB]... look left. I dunno what that is, but for some reason it reminds me of newton.
Matsu-
I think what you're calling a Newton is a computer speaker. You can see the speaker wire going behind it to the far left.
- It would have to be easy to use
- No wires (Steve hates them)
- Useful or important enough that Apple would write Ink
Obviously Apple needed the technology, and it wasn't designed to allow graphic designers to use their Wacom to write a term paper.I'm sorry, but this does look like a crumb in a trail to our PDA. That makes no sense because Jobs said he wasn't interested in making PDA's.
Does anyone know what is really going on?
I'm guessing their are taking their time, But I sure hope it's a PDA.
yeah I figured, the shape and size just made me think of a Newton.
On a serious note. Apple has shown the desire to utilize a foreign underpinning in creating it's new OS. Because of the features and market penetration in server space, science, engineering, and developer arenas. 'UNIX to OSX.'
The underpinings of PalmOS5 give a similar wide developer base and an ideally suited OS for small targetted or multifunction peripheral devices. Using it allows Apple to tap a market (and it's resources) while bringing it's own unique features.
Might we see 'PalmOS5 to handheld device' or other iDevice?

Stevie also said crt's were dead.

Scroll up to see the front. These were sold around the time of the Newton - you know, when beige was the pinnacle of design...

So thats why the rest of the world plays it then?

And that's why the rest of the world uses Windows.
I think it's inevitable Apple will make a full-scale PDA, there's just too much user demand not to. That's why they made the eMac, and kept the CRT. Users DEMANDED it. Apple likes money. PDAs would make them money. The iPod has sold well, because we're lusting for such small and portable tech.
I bet Steve said he was never going back to Apple, too

I'd say Apple should wait the release of version 6 of the PalmOS. That'll be the Be-derived version; it'll be no small transition, it is going to Be a totally new OS, with old apps running in some sort of emulation (I think this happens already with version 5 and ARM processors, but I'm not sure). Version 5 is still crappy, it'd be foolish for Apple to invest in a technology that in 12 months (assuming PalmOS 6 is released by then) is going to be obsolete...
