I don't get why they'd go with double-tap to bring the screen down to halfway. Surely dragging the finger down over the button would allow them to pull the screen down as you drag so that you could leave it at the height you wanted and give visual feedback. It's not an optimal solution either way as it's far too time-consuming to do that every single time you need to reach the top of the display and accidentally going home or opening multi-tasking is going to be frustrating, which the person in the video did almost every time.
I see how the sliding down over the Home Button would mirror the sliding down of the screen, but the video says it's the ring that notices the touch so is it possible for it to understand a swipe with the current tech in the Home Button?
And perhaps they tested that option, too. I assume the goal of Reachability to reach the upper part of the screen without moving your hand. Is a slide down just to go all the way up a natural feeling? I am testing the motion you're suggesting with the reason for the motion against Apple's solution; I think Apple's feels better, but neither feels great to me at this point.
Well, apparently I was wrong about the camera. There appears to be a trim ring around the lens cover that stands out an infinitesimal amount from the surface—to keep the (sapphire?) from scraping, i guess.
But I was certainly less wrong than those Russian and Chinese gomers who jammed the guts of a 5s into cobbled-together imitation iP6 cases. The 5s camera wouldn't fit, so they had it sticking way out from the back. Ludicrous on the face of it.
For comparison the iPhone 3G/3GS was 115.5 × 62.1 × 12.3 mm for a box volume of 88,222 mm3, which is well over than the iPhone 6 and even a slightly higher box volume than the iPhone 6 Plus. Also, all iPhones from the original through the iPhone 4S weighed more than the 4.7" iPhone will. So when you consider the slightly thicker side bezel of the earlier models, the squared off design of the iPhone 4, 4S, 5 and 5S compared to the more natural feeling curve, and higher weight the 4.7" model should not be an issue for anyone who comfortable with the current or older iPhones in those key areas.
Now the 5.5" model that's seems way to large for me even with Reachability looking solid (as compared to Samsung's shrinking to edge option). For me to get the 5.5" model they would have to offer ReachAround as a feature, not just Reachability.
iPhone 6 Plus = 87,331 mm3
Galaxy Note 3 = 99,393 mm3
Galaxy Note 3 has a larger box volume by 12,062 mm3*
iPhone 6 = 72,420 mm3
Moto X = 87,810 mm3
Moto X has a larger box volume by 15,390 mm3*
* I don't know if your dimensions of thickness include the bezel for the lens. I assume they don't but it's perfectly reasonable to include them for this type of volume measurement so that would likely remove some of the difference but no where near enough to make the box volume not be in Apple's favour in terms of size.
Note 4 is probably closer to iPhone 6 Plus in terms of timeframe. The Note 4 is bigger than Note 3 @ 153 x 79 x 8.5 (102.739 mm3)

That would not work due to the tiny movement on the sensor having to translate to a very large movement on the screen. But what would work would be a special gesture, like a back and forth swipe with the thumb at the point where you want the top of the screen to move to.
Yes, I am the biggest tool around. " src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" /> Note that I had no idea this was a real brand when I came up with the name.
So bummed about the protruding camera. Basically forces you to get a case. Which eliminates the value of a thin phone.
I would have liked to see them keeping the back flat even if it was a bit thicker - this would have allowed a bigger battery. Truth us though most people will put it in a case which will eliminate the protruding lens.

I can tell you that the 5th Gen iPod has a protruding camera and it doesn't matter at all, however you still need a case because the design is so frikken smooth and slippery. I go for the Piel Frama.

The slide over the button wouldn't mirror the screen movement exactly, it would be a ratio of the movement and doesn't need to be precise but I don't like the idea of moving the finger to the home button every time anyway. I'd rather it was a gesture up where you wanted to reach. They use slide in from the left to go back. If they aren't using slide in from the right (maybe in a downward arc), perhaps that can be used to pull the top down and the amount would be how much you drag down. The best solution of course is to not build stupidly sized phones in the first place. At least the 4.7" is close to workable without using this hack.
why Google Wallet? Apply Pay makes Google Wallet look like a welfare case...lol
How so? Both use NFC. I have all my loyalty cards in it, my roommate pays me through it, I've been buying things with it, can put all my gift cards in it, I also get tracking info from things I buy online.
I'm extremely excited about Apple Pay but it works just like Google Wallet. Token and all.
10.4 is the thickest, tapering out to I think 4mm. If you hold one in your hand I think you'd find that 10.4mm doesn't mean anything when it comes to comfort.. I'm going to guess that many would find MotoX design more comfortable than even Apple's new iPhone 6. It feels a lot smaller than it actually is. I do like the changes Apple made tho and it too will probably feel smaller than a typical 4.7" phone. Smoothing those edges is a good move.

pre order process??
can you pre order through iPhone apple store app or how??
12:01am 9/12???
The 4.7" 6 is 138.1 x 76.0 x 6.9mm. Again for comparison purposes the 4.7" Moto X comes in at 129.3 x 65.3 x 10.4 mm)
10.4mm!, that's hilarious.

Yeah, the wife has one. It's a little chunky.

It's Sapphire lens. Should be scratch proof. I don't intend to use it with a case.
Good to see someone living up to their username.

The front is beautiful but the back is ugly. Why didn't they go with an iPad like design for the antenna
Like a large piece of black glass on top of the device? No, thank you.
Trust me, you can configure Reachability in iOS 8 settings or at least in the next iOS update.
The 5.5" will be mine. Plus, now I'll finally be able to use Google Wallet from it.
