Oh, my! It looks really exciting!

Check out the new teaser: http://variety.com/2014/film/news/star-wars-the-force-awakens-trailer-watch-1201365773/

Although just under a minute and a half in length, it looks and feels just about perfect. Abrams has this one down cold.

    1. It’s pretty. Really pretty. Models and practical sets shot, and where it’s CGI it looks detailed enough (and the lighting accurate enough) to make me really happy.

    2. I like that they’ve kept the idea of the Imperial Remnant, having read zero of the expanded universe myself, anyway.

    3. I’m not exactly sure how to articulate how I feel about the new way of shooting things. It has ‘Abrams’ written all over it, but I’m accustomed to the traditional ship shots, both in style (fairly static camera with pans, tracks, etc.) and format (tactics based on WWII-era dogfighting and beyond). Being that it’s Abrams, there will be zooms. I don’t think I’d like his zooms in Star Wars. It’s a “found footage” style, as though a birdwatcher was minding his own business and then suddenly WHAM LOOK A SPACESHIP LET ME GET A CLOSER LOOK. It worked for Firefly, it happened in Star Trek, but I don’t think I’d like it in Star Wars.

Having said that, I like the ‘move with the ship’ camera. That was fresh and different. And, now that I think of it, kind of video-gamey, but that’s okay. Third person games are fun.

    4. No, I don’t like the silly lightsaber with a bladed cross-guard. DO YOU KNOW WHAT A CROSS-GUARD IS? A CROSS-GUARD IS THERE TO KEEP YOUR HAND FROM SLIPPING TO THE BLADE AND FROM KEEPING SOMEONE ELSE’S BLADE FROM SLIPPING TO YOUR HAND. BUT NOW YOU’VE DECIDED TO BUILD IT OUT OF MAGNETIZED PLASMA. OH, YEAH, I’M SURE THAT’S SAFE, DING-DONG. I also don’t like the style of the blade, but maybe that’s just on that guy’s lightsaber. Plasma doesn’t behave like flame.

And screw you, Abrams, for making half of your teaser nothing but darkness. Now it’ll be spring before we get a proper one.

7/10; would get angry at again.

I'll have this looping for the entire day.

Loving the John Williams work in the background also.

Easy on the lens flare too. Can't wait for more.

It looks alright. Star Wars had an originally pulpy, retro feel, a good vs evil story archetype to the scifi themed flying cars and ray guns. I have faith that JJ Abrams kept the important elements things intact, so the end result feels like a "new classic" Star Wars movie, rather than Lost or Star Trek.

I thought the trailer was pretty boring.

If it's not going to reveal much about what's going on then at least make it interesting to watch. These fan-made ones are better:

It's quite a scary trailer in some ways. The original movies were more about the Rebels vs the Empire, with the Force just a background thing, but the Force seems to be the main thing here, which is something I more associate with the prequels.

As long as the beginning crawl hovers over a massive pile of Gungan corpses, I'll be all-in.

As long as it is about The Force and not "midi-chlorians" we'll be fine.

The midichlorians sub-plot was a giant error.

I’ll be fine with them deconning (not retconning, deconning) everything that isn’t the movies as long as they also retcon midichlorians.

    2. Another interpretation is that it's the New Republic Navy. The stormtrooper in the trailer is too young to be an Imperial remnant -- he probably wasn't born until after the Battle of Endor. Also, the stormtroopers' are sporting clean, upgraded battle armor, rather than something left over from the Empire.

    3. The term you're looking for is probably "handheld" or "steadycam" used to create a more documentary feel to a movie. As for the slick follow-cam that trails the Falcon to reveal TIE fighters that were chasing her, that feels a bit showy, like it was made just for the trailer, because of the reveal at the end. TRON Legacy's lush teaser trailer was completely built out of scenes never part of the movie (in fact, the trailer was made as a "test" to gauge interest).

I don't know how old you are, but that teaser trailer was like manna from heaven for me and convinced me Abrams is the right guy for this.

They could still recruit. It’s not like that Japanese regiment in the Philippines that kept fighting for 30 years.

Oh, sure. No reason for TIEs to be on Tatooine.

And another thing, IS TATOOINE’S CORE MADE OF KAIBURR CRYSTAL OR SOMETHING? WHY DOES LITERALLY EVERYTHING IMPORTANT IN THE GALAXY HAPPEN HERE? Coruscant is an ecumenopolis, for crying out loud. Don’t you think that the planet chosen to hold 10 quadrillion inhabitants would be a little more, oh, I don’t know, RELEVANT?

The midichlorians sub-plot was a giant error.

It definitely cheapened The Force into a mere medical condition. Unfortunately, it is canon. Of course, "Han shot first" is also canon, but it didn't stop Lucas from screwing with canon.

Since the Midichlorians came up in the prequels, which was the past, they could say it was just a false scientific understanding people had at the time.

The X-Wings look like they're on some kind of forested planet (Endor?) and the guy with the red lightsaber is somewhere cold (Hoth?)

I’d say Kashyyyk, or hopefully somewhere else entirely. And Hoth was outside the habitable zone for anything; it just happened to have a breathable atmosphere.

And remember that Endor was a moon, not a planet in its own right? We never did see the planet it was around. Maybe they’ll shoehorn it into the background in the re-re-re-re-re-re-re-release of 456 for the 9 movie box set in 2021. Just in time for the announcement of Episode 10, because Star Wars is a Disney property now and Disney only cares about whoring out properties regardless of story.
