Instead of feeling deeply offended this CEO should put more pressure on these Chinese suppliers. Comparing to what other companies are doing is not enough. Others don't have apple resources or reputation...
I really doubt you are so free of buying anything which is not exploitive.
Nothing is worse than being lectured by naive hypocrites. You have these occupy wall street types, rallying against big corporations, standing there in their Nike sneakers, their North Face jackets, their Levi's jeans, spreading their message via social media using their iPhones. What a bunch of damn fools! You have mega rich millionaires who own multiple houses (fatso Michael Moore) who also supports the OWC crowd.
Lets all pop over to the factory next door making Samsung or other manufactures phones and other consumer tech to see if you can spot any difference! I will save you the job... there is none!
Is Apple the largest supplier of electronic goods to the West? No, so why is there no pressure on the other companies to improve the workers lot?
Are we all willing to pay more for our goods and have them made locally? No, so maybe we should all be less judgemental and encourage companies to openly accept the problem and work slowly (it's never going to happen overnight) to improve the situation as Apple has done.
I expect Apple to strive for excellence, just like they do with their products.
Apple can do better regarding the supply chain. Comparing yourself to lousy sub par companies is not what I expect from Apple. Good enough won't do. It is a recipe for complacency. I expect Apple to set new standards and push the Human race forward. This is why I am happy to pay a premium for their products/services.
If Apple - a highly profitable company - cannot solve this issue, then Capitalism has no place in this society.
Merry Xmas to you all,
A very disappointed Apple user and concerned fellow Human being.
the furniture you bought made from rain forest wood cut from under native peoples.
I support the exploitation of rare and exotic woods, especially when it comes to things like guitars. I'm not a guitar player (even though I own a few guitars), and what counts is having the best possible instrument. Everything else is secondary.
Certain woods will resonate better than others, giving a better tone, and that's what's important.

Except that it is clear that Apple is striving in this area, and is setting new standards. But because they have not been immediately and completely successful you feel able to condemn them and Capitalism? What an idiotic post.
Actually, the final breaking of the UK was America threatening to sell your debt over the Suez Canal. It was a mistake in retrospect, but if you wanted a moment that it became clear the UK was finished as a world power, that was it.
Now, now gents, we're all part of the same empire. And look what a monster it's become...

Apple is doing more than anyone else. But it's not only Apple's problem to solve. If it bothers you so much then perhaps you should buy your products from someone else.
Welcome to modern exploitive capitalism. Apple is better than most BY FAR. Look at the clothes and shoes you are wearing, made in far more exploitive conditions by small underfed people & children in Bangladesh, the baubles you bought at the big box store of your choice, the furniture you bought made from rain forest wood cut from under native peoples.
Even in the computer industry, things are much worse all the way around. HP making servers in Mexico by Mexicans making under $1/day, etc....
Which is why picking on Apple makes sense. I tend to be an Apple apologist and believe they are better than most in terms of its treatment of workers. But lets not be blinded by fanboy-ism. The reason we can all purchase amazing products at ridiculous prices is not magic. Many people work hard for a pittance for our privilege. The reason Apple is picked on so often is that Apple sets high standards for itself and proclaims its values for the world to hear. I applaud that but it stands to reason that people will scrutinize Apple against its own claims / promises.
I don't support click baiting whether it is by the Panorama team or Apple Insider (and I am pretty certain this is essentially click baiting), but the value is that more people will watch and more people will, one would hope, understand that there is a direct connection between the low prices we pay for our luxury goods and other people's misery. The fact that Apple may be better than most is unimportant in this context.
I haven't seen the programme and would have hoped it gave credit to Apple where it does a good job in this area. but I don't have a problem with Apple being taken to task for not following its own contractor / worker guidelines. Apple can take it and Apple can fix it. Remember that Apple is one of the largest most successful companies in the world and and takes pride in putting itself high on the ethical pedestal. Once on the pedestal everybody will want to knock you off, that's just the name of the game. And if you put yourself up there you better make sure you have your house in order. Pointing to the others and saying 'look how bad THEY are!', doesn't really cut it for the leader of the pack.
Agreed! It's time that certain people put their money where their mouth is!
Why, when its so much easier to be a hypocrite. If Apple is responsible for the plight of Chinese factory workers then aren't all the people who purchase Apple products responsible too? If nobody buys iPhones there's nothing for Chinese factory workers to assemble is there?

Do we know for a fact this is the case? Has Apple admitted it (or not denied it)?
Not the first time the BBC Panorama did a hit piece. Would like someone to do a hit piece on their practices. (that goes for all media organizations) Then they will cry and complain it wasn't fair. Fair is always determined by who is doing the reporting.

It would be hilarious, if in the near future, robots would replace the majority of human factory workers, and then millions of Chinese people would lose their jobs, and they would all be starving, and then I guess that these same people would be blaming Apple for that too. At least the starving Chinese wouldn't have to worry about working for 60 hours a week!" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

Ah so this isn't about Apple it's anti-capitalist garbage wrapped around we care about Chinese factory workers, and throw Apple in there for the ratings/page views.

Apple happens to make the best products out there. It is a seamless experience between software and hardware which I am happy to pay a premium for.
I am expecting Apple to invest their profits back into society. Right now they are sitting on a mountain of half a trillion $ of cash. I am not being unreasonable here.

Not all people have access to money. Those factory workers, working 60 hours a week, still won't be able to vote with their hard earned cash.
This is why we need to re-think Capitalism. The current system is neither good for the planet and society as a whole.

Marxism? Woah. I guess that we do not share the same political philosophies, to put it mildly.

I encourage you to watch the complete video [9:00]. It is narrated by Alain the Botton, a great philosopher in London.
Spoiler alert: Marx has been misrepresented by dictators.
