And despite his constant cheerleading, DED has yet to get the call. A travesty.
Apple likes DED right were he is. DED can say things that Apple (in their understated conservative way) can't say. However, I think Apple should show DED some love; maybe slip him a new 12" MBA for (ahem) "evaluation" purposes.
In a world where Apple bashing still goes on, I like a cheerleader to stand up and get a little over-the-top too.
I wonder if this isn't part of an effort to put together a comprehensive documentation of Apple's history, basically an Apple bible. It would certainly help to have people knowledgeable about the historical context, which is something I always appreciate about DED's articles..
Come to think of it, as an agnostic, maybe it's time I find something to worship. One could do a lot worse than Apple. Maybe they've already started:
"Lo, let it be known that on this, the 323rd day of the 38th year since the birth of Apple, the story of the inception of modern man shall be recorded in the reverent application known as Pages. Let no person be blind to the irony that on a day previously attributed to the antics of fools, the vehicle for the rapid evolution of modern man was ignited amidst the glory of the garage of the Founder's parents, for there was no room at the Hewlett Packard headquarters."
I don't know if I could consider something seminal unless it was saved on a 400K floppy, written in MacWrite and printed on an ImageWriter 1.
We don't know that Snell wasn't offered a job at one point.
In Snell's last Upgrade episode, as part of a discussion of limitations and (ignored) opportunities for Apple in the podcasting space (eg promoting standards for chapter-markers, making podcasting easier in Garageband/Logic) he mentioned that he couldn't see himself at Apple unless it involved podcasting or podcasting evangelism. He was responding to a comment by his co-host and made it seem as if he hadn't spoken with anyone at Apple about a job... and that given Apple's uninterest in the issues he mentioned there was nothing for him there.

Edit: No more coffee for me today.
Well although not a wimpy agnostic , and am full bore atheistic, I find that a very funny post. It has a certain Star Trekian feel to it ... 'one day in 2615 when the planet Apple (formerly known as Earth) inhabitants enter the glass temples they will read the word of Job and of his disciple Ive from the book of Breen.
I think they need a team of "reviewers" to try to replace the Late Steve jobs' ability to "sublimate" features, and functions of a device to allow it to "leave home, and enter the real world"...

How about (digitally) inscribed on tablets??

Yes, even more so because he has:
Information Technology Experience
A decade of experience in technical consulting or employment in information technology, recognized by the University of California to be equivalent to a Master’s Degree in Computer Science.
Congratulations go to Breen. I've read so many of his articles in Macworld. It's a huge loss for them. In fact, I miss the print publication very much. Two issues have hit my zinio app and I've yet to look at them. That subscription has seen its last update. The end of an era.

I was thinking a little along the same lines. Apple has a lot of great ideas and great tech, but it doesn't always seem quite as polished as it used to be, missing those nips and tucks that make it "just work." Perhaps these hires are to help bring some of that perspective back that was lost with Steve.
Let's see how the concern trolls in the media spin this as impending doom for Apple. The media concern trolls are out in full force. Two years ago the media was all concerned about lack of innovation at Apple. Some even wondering out loud if Tim Cook needed to be replaced, others spreading rumors that the board was pushing him to innovate faster. Now the trolls are all concerned that Apple is losing its way because *gasp* it's looking into the automobile space, and will be selling a smart watch. And of course raising the bar on the Watch. Never mind that last year Tim Cook told Charlie Rose the watch would "start with the heart", the WSJ says the Watch won't cure cancer so it's a failure and Cook needs to cancel it before it ships.
I hope Chris Breen has been hired in a PR capacity. I think Apple really needs help in that arena. They need more good people that shape the message and drive the narrative instead of letting the media do it for them.
I'm minded to agree with the WSJ.
In light of the failure Apple have had with the sensor accuracy, I think they should cancel the Apple Watch. I think Jobs would have, too.
Remember: for every yes, there are a thousand no's.
I was just wondering what Apple is doing with these people and their particular set of skills.
are you certain writing & editing are there only skills? I'm not. there are many aptitudes at Apple, programming and engineering are some, obviously, but there are others.
Comments
Not to mention Guy Kawasaki.
Finally, proof that Apple are developing a car. I predict they'll soon corner 10% of the market!

ANYONE feel this way too, up-vote this post....

Smart move

Love the sound of his voice.
Yep, wish I had hair like his, too!
If this comes to pass, I suggest another tech blogger's name: Topher Kessler

Atheism is too much of a commitment

The question is whether these "over-the-top" "cheerleaders" do more harm than good, like the Apple "Lemmings" commercial.
