How amazing would it be if Apple finally put a dedicated shutter button on the camera?
How nice would it be if they moved the lens where fingers weren't always in the frame...
You know like Samsung?
I bet people drop their iPhones a lot because of that, having to just hold on the edge especially the rounded edge. Most people are right handed too so they will be gripping it with their left hand near the lens which is less coordinated sometimes, especially since that is the hand you would use to trip the shutter with the volume button too. I suppose you could turn the camera upside down but I'm in the habit of using my right hand to reach the on screen button.
The other thing that was disappointing is when they took away the ability to press and hold, then simply release to snap the shot. There is a tendency to introduce camera shake if you have to hit the button instead of just release it. They could have put another button for rapid shooting.
And while I'm bitching, I don't particularly like the power button location. I end up turning off the screen by accident all the time now.
Maybe they are using the curiosity trick, ... 'What is that ad ... ?' which sometimes gets more attention than the obvious.
I'm not certain. It's a big city and people have a very short attention span. Some are going to be curious but most will just pass. It's a good location but the billboard is at an angle with the street, the view is on a little square.
I don't have GPS so not sure. I have never uploaded an iPhone picture but I will do that and see if GPS shows up or not, that's a good point if you uploaded images of your own home!
Pro Tip: If you like to keep your geotags on because most of the photos you take with your iPhone are for personal use, but every now and then you want to upload a photo you've take to the internet, you can easily remove that geotag an other EXIF data to help maintain your anonymity by brining up the photo in Photos, making it full screen, and then taking a screenshot of it. Then you simply upload that screenshot, not the original. Screenshots don't include geotags or other info found in EXIF.
Next time on Pro Tip we'll be discussing an old trick I picked up in the Sudan. Hint: It involves sticking pencils up your nostrils and putting underpants on your head. Wibble.
But why would you need a separate button when you're not in the camera? Unless you do want to take pictures of the inside of your pocket.
Because pressing a single button at any screen at any time even when the phone is off is a much easier and elegant solution to launch the camera than any different combination of swipes and presses that is needed to launch it now.
The shutter button on a point and shoot camera are pretty much where the Volume Up button is on the iPhone. I'm sure that's why they choose it.
The problem is that the lens is on the same end of the phone. Traditional P&S has the lens on the other end and up high, so you can grip the camera without obscuring it. The iPhone configuration leads to a lighter grip and more shakes.

How would you prevent accidental photos? Even on a P&S, you still need to turn the camera on and hit the separate shutter button.

I have a Tasker profile to automatically turn the camera on if I rotate the phone into a landscape photo orientation. Such use of sensors could easily eliminate most accidental photos.
Interestingly, this Tasker profile was overshadowed by my Moto X's default twist gesture that opens the camera app and also switches between front/back cameras. So freaking handy, and can be enabled when the phone is still locked.

Do you have a habit of turning your phone on or changing the volume when it is in your pocket? The answer is the make the button need enough force. If you have even played with a Lumia phone you can tell how nice it is.
Actually . . uhh . .they don't look that great. . there is one right at my bus stop in Washington DC. Dupont Circle - West. D2. line. The resolution is terrible. Not that that is the phones fault. Billboard photos should be left to medium format.
Anyway, I am sure allthe isheep will be cooing about how wonderful they are, and pay through the nose for the next iphone, so they will have achieved their purpose.
I will photograph the shot I am talking about to show you my point . .
Not people "Will" laugh at Apple . .they already are . . for anyone who has done anything close to professional photography, these photos are a joke . .
If Apple's two year old specification cameras really outperformed android, Apple would post an android photo next to the iphone photo and show the difference.
Apple would not dare do that . .the emporoer would be shown to have no clothes.

They don't need to. The volume buttons double as it.

Only when you are already in the camera app.

Yeah, I'm not sure why it would need to be dedicated when the the VolumeUp button works great for still photos.
If there is going to be any dedicated button added to the iPhone I'd like to be for my Siri personal assistant.

You can use it much more like a traditional P&S if things are arranged properly (Lenovo Vibe Shot):
The shutter button on a point and shoot camera are pretty much where the Volume Up button is on the iPhone. I'm sure that's why they choose it.
