The new MacBook isn't yet available. Apple specifically mentioned that the new USB connector supports DisplayPort technology, so I will guess that an adapter will soon be available. That said, this new machine is the bottom of the MacBook line, MacBook < MacBook Air < MacBook Pro. It's not surprising that it doesn't have all of the features as its more powerful siblings.

Really? How about a bit of a lesser magnet, proportionate to mass - wouldn't that work? ;)

    Then it releases too easily.

I am not sure that there is enough space for a "standard" size USB connector.

Not so. From the Apple product page ...

    • Headphone port

      • Headphone/optical digital audio output (minijack)

      • Support for Apple iPhone headset with remote and microphone

Thanks - Still odd, that the macbook is not yet available, but its up and spec'd on Apple website, and in the specs it says it can drive an external monitor of 3840 by 2160, but there is no mention of an adapter. Maybe Apple will out a new monitor with usb-c?

The web site lists several adapters, for HDMI, VGA, etc etc

no need to add etc etc, they only mention 2 you mentioned, HDMI, VGA. As I stated none of these will work with Apples own Monitor, which needs thunderbolt or display port, which the new macbook says it can support. Yet there is no mention adapter that can connect the new macbook to an apple monitor.

?!? 'Couldn't care less about fact or reason'?!? Are you ****** nuts?... We actually do design for a living, dear. Yes, the new MB is meant as an ultra-portable and yes, normal daily functioning is greatly hampered by the single port. The dongle is an odd, unattractive and unnecessarily forced appendage to a rather sleek retina laptop. An additional port and an appropriately calculated MagSafe would not brake that bank or hurt the design, they will make the machine useful.

Is Apple going to start removing Magsafe, Thunderbolt, and standard USB ports from all laptops?

For home or office use, it would have been better if Apple also announced a full featured USB-C dock (power, audio, multiple standard USB ports, ethernet, Displayport MST, *No Drivers Required*) that will be ready to ship the same day as the new MacBook.  How long will it take for third parties to start making USB-C docks and adapters?

It may be $79 more for you, IF you need the connector. I don't, so it's NOT $79 more for me. Ala Carte is better for most of us. It is DESIGNED to be a WIRELESS link to the Apple eco-system. If it's not for you, it's not for you. The "Air" and the "Pro" are still available. Please stop the whining.

Sorry, but I hate dongles, I use both USB connectors on my MacBook. The MagSafe connector has saved my Mac dozens of times. Now, that I think about it, I use EVERY connector on my MacBook surprisingly often.

This new MacBook must certainly not be for people like me, except I can't think of a single person I know it could be for, that wouldn't be better served by a MacBook Air or a MacBook Pro or an iPad for that matter. Ok, I guess iPad users would be well served by something this light and powerful that's a real Mac. I just hope this isn't representative of the future of Apple in terms of laptops and usable ports (Please, MagSafe... MAGSAFE!)

Please Apple, stop removing stuff for the sake of removal (and Ive's OCD when it comes to thinness and ports) without thinking of usability and practicality. Thank you.

    Just pondering...

Truly amazing isn't it, how they got to be the most successful company on earth without thinking stuff through, isn't it? Maybe they need you on their design team.

Probably not. This is the low-end MacBook. Did you not notice they upgraded the other MacBooks to Thunderbolt 2 yesterday?

That's bit hostile, isn't it? Are we having a grouchy morning there?...

No need for malice, an extra port and a MagSafe would not have hurt at all. Tnx for taking the burden to generalize for everyone, but a highly portable machine has to have connectivity options. We all love the Apple ecosystem, but the huge dongle is not the elegant solution to that. Kindly chill out please.

It was DESIGNED around WIRELESS connectivity. The "dongle" availaibility is a gift to the folks dying to make it into something it is not designed to be. WIRELESS. If it isn't for you, get an "Air" or "Pro".

The future’s irrelevant. USB 3 didn’t even use the same connector and they just invented C; the trend is toward MORE new ports, so that’s not a point in their favor. Anyway, hopefully all of the existing ones are now rendered obsolete. BUT WE KNOW THAT PRINTERS WILL IGNORE THAT AND KEEP USING B, effing piles of…

Not over USB, no. But USB 3.1 (and type C) include something called Alt mode, which among other things, allows the use of using the USB 3.0/3.1 pins as display port. Apple's own site lists the new Macbook as complying with Displayport 1.2 which is already ahead of any USB at close to 18 Gb/s. They also list it as USB 3.1 Gen 1 and only supporting USB 3.0 speeds (not 3.1) so this Macbook won't support 5k, but future Macs will/might.

OK - got it, a grouchy morning dwindles into a finely grouchy afternoon... I do understand that it was DESIGNED around WIRELESS. However, it is a full fledged computer and with its size and capabilities it is also meant to be a light presentation machine - i.e. connectivity (in an aesthetically pleasing way) is essential. We already have couple of Airs - but we miss a nice retina on them. The MBP is definitely heavier to shlep around for a day. Frankly, I don't understand what makes you such an expert on design and its intent, capitalized or not. On the other hand, we do design for a living as mentioned and - as a professional - I can assure you, that having at least one additional port will not harm appearance, or price point, or weight; it will only enhance function and will result in greater usability and wider user base... Dude... :smokey:

Not a helpful post with useless link.

Then the answer is clear-you wait until Apple releases a Displayport adapter.
