I will again point out that this is exactly as I have predicted and foreseen, and have posted about repeated here and in many places. For years now I've been saying that Apple will be releasing great products that everyone loves and buys. I've written repeatedly about how Apple will make media available in new and exciting ways, make it possible to connect devices, share information and content, assist people in making personal choices for their well being.
What do we think motivated Apple's price drop to $69?
I see three possibilities:
1. Burn off inventory. (suggested -- and then negated -- above)
2. Prep for a 2-tier offering (entry-level vs. advanced)
3. Increase ownership metrics so that content-providers are enticed with a bigger addressable market.
Thoughts?
Think of the iPhone model: carriers buy iPhones and resell (lease with purchase) to customers.
If AppleTV replaces set top boxes, there are benefits to the consumer, cable carrier and Apple.
Consumer gets a better UI. Ever try to find a program on FIOS?
Cable gets a weapon to wield against the cord cutters.
Apple sells a crapload of iStuff.
The content producers have to buy in or be left behind.
Al la carte is always more expensive than all you can eat.
Nice! Since it may be announced at (the supposedly software-centric) WWDC, maybe we can hope for a UI overhaul as well.
Me thinks a lot more people want a new Apple TV over a watch.
The Apple Watch, in conjunction with Siri, is the remote control for the new Apple TV, HomeKit, HomeServer ...
I take back my former skepticism about Apple's TV service. My concern was that without original content Apple's TV platform wouldn't gain widespread use over competitors. Now I see what Apple's exclusive TV content will become, apps.
What will the remote be for the new ATV that lets you run apps? An iPhone app?
I'd love an AppleTV with gaming possibilities. They wouldnt even need to add much hardware as so much can be done through streaming. Would be fantasic to have access to something like Playstation Now (streaming service for PS1, PS2, & PS3 games). Sony currently allows streaming to certain smart Bravia TVs. Just grad a bluetooth PS3 controller and you're set. Sony did specifically name the iPad when it spoke about other platforms for their streaming service so why not the new AppleTV as well?
It's more a consumer (cheapness?) choice rather than a technical choice. Each year I say "I'm going to update my AppleTV" and then I hear the yearly rumors about them updating it soon. Therefore I decide as a consumer that'll I'll wait and see if the update ever materializes and use the one I have as it's not having any issues.
It's more a case of me not wanting to update to the latest version and then them coming out with a new model a month later or anything...
So its your fault the have not updated yet ! If you had bought your ATV two weeks later the would have already update it. /s
That is a good news for me because I am a big fan of apple. If i got money in coming days i will try it and i also see in this era that there is many things that is upgraded so i saw a site http://www.chicagoknifeworks.com this is a wonderful site and in this site there is a verity of knifes and other things that i have never seen.
AFAIK, the present AppleTV is 32 bits. So The new AppleTV will be 64 bits and be inline with all other iStuff... (And all of the non 64 bit iPad's / iPod's will be discontinued... Anything before the iPad Air)
The New AppleTV also means new iPod Touches ... And Every Apple device will be 64Bits to provide a cohesive programming environment. (Apple watch...i do not know if it will be 64bits because of power/ embedded Concerns...)
As far as I know it's been selling quite well actually.
same here. ive blocked the trolls, but just ask anyone trolling on sales to link to their data that its not selling well -- there isnt any data, of course, so the troll will be shut down.
Really? Vinyl sales are at an all time high, and people are switching back to analog formats for the richness of sound vs compressed digital formats. 24/192 uncompressed audio isn't that "niche" anymore. Pono, HDtracks.. ect. It's on the rise. Apple should be ready for it.

Yep, 1 & 3 especially. People possibly don't initially think about #3 but that is a major motivator for the content producers and content distributors, which means if they are enticed to join ATV (to get access to more consumers), more people will want to buy ATV, which means more content producers/distributors will join, and on and on.
I'm very excited about the notion of new ATV, been a big fan since gen 1 (when I cut my cable), on gen 2 now (hacked for XBMC), so an app store with options like XBMC (oops, now "Kodi") and other home theatre apps will be hugely useful, but also the games are what I'm very much looking forward to on any new device. Plus, so much I can't even imagine at this point until we get them into our living rooms and start using them, along with the great apps developers will create, this device could really shake things up in very interesting ways regarding home computing, game playing, home theatre... Fun times ahead if they do have a device ready to go.
Apple please stop. You are killing me with one after other groundbreaking products announcements which seems way ahead of competitors and often we can think of what we want/need. I have feeling, this new Apple TV set top will soon become preferred Home entertainment and central gadget/devices/appliances control HUB. Can't wait.
I think 4K will always be a niche product, just like 3D. Look at how long it took networks to make the switch to HD. This was fairly recent so I doubt anyone would want to spend money to upgrade all their equipment so they can broadcast in 4K.
Actually, 4k is available from streaming even if cable doesn't support its. Also, any IP TV distribution system like U-Verse could support 4k right now because channels feeds are stream instead of broadcast, so they have plenty of bandwidth for it.
4k will be adopted because its relevant on screens bigger than 40". Any big screen TV will look better in 4k than HD.
4k is also relevant in PC monitors, you get retina on PC's at 4k resolution.
4k is getting available on low price cameras and on high end smartphones, which put it in the hands of consumers.
Regarding 3D, it will work once they can do it without glasses.
It's possible that they'll have an Apple Designed game controller, but it is also possible that you would use your iPad/iPhone via bluetooth as a controller for the games on Apple TV. Again this is hugely speculative there are slight possibilities.
Or maybe Apple TV will support third party bluetooth game controllers the ones that are already available for iOS devices.. Hence opening up the Apple TV SDK for software as well as opening up the Hardware and adding the device to a newly created MFATV (Made for AppleTV)
Since there's a huge industry for third party accessories and devices that interact with iOS devices, there can be an equally huge opportunity for an Apple TV accessories, which can mainly include HomeKit.
Talking about home kit, I can see the big screen being a sort of a control center for your home where you can see the data from all of the home kit enabled devices.
This all sounds so exciting, lets just wait another 2-3 months to see what really happens
If Apple brings ForceTouch to iPhones and iPads, they'll both make excellent game controllers. I think they will and think ForceTouch and AppleTV will work nicely together also as a remote. Many folks have complained about the gum stick ATV remote; with FT and Siri, Apple may have removed that pain point.

Maybe 'quite well' isn't good enough for Apple.

All hail how visionary I am.

I'll believe when I see it.

Finally. The new model will be $99, the old will still be $69.

I really don't see 4K ever happening.
... ever ...
