Several posters seem to believe this represents a new career direction for him. Probably few know enough about theater to explain what a coproducer does. Write a check is it, basically.
You describe an angel or backer. A producer and even co-producer has a creative, logistic, and oversight responsibility as well as a financial one. Probably does things very similar to some of his administrative tasks when he was at Apple. [But it depends. As in film, producers might do anything from lawyering , insurance, publicity, contracts, etc. and cash.]

No, I am describing a coproducer. A producer has creative control. A coproducer generally does not.

The administrative tasks I describe don't exactly amount to "creative control," nor are they, "just writing a check."

No administrative tasks either. Coproducers write checks. If you look in a theater program, the people you refer to as "angels" or "backers" are listed as "coproducers."

Well that was an unexpected turn of events, and mildly amusing too...Silicon Valley to Broadway - west coast to east coast, what a contrast.
