Who's buying at MacWorld New York?
So, Apple is going to announce new Power Macs at the expo.
1. Who's buying one after they're announced?
2. What do you intend on using it for?
3. If you're going to pass on the new models given the likely specs, what would make you buy?

But no, for what I do, the dual 1 GHz machines were already way faster than necessary, so I bought then. I tend to use my computers until they wear out, not until I feel I need a faster machine. My last machine was a Frankensteined Beige G3 and it died in January.
Regards,
Pete
Otherwise, I'm waiting for the G5.

- Updated G4 with new case, new design, faster processors, price drops, DDR-RAM, screaming speeds, all sorts of goodies
- G5, with any of the above
- G4 iBook with a slightly revamped design, or maybe a middle-of-the-road G3 iPowerBook that has the best of both worlds, a worldly design, and without a price that's out of this world (a la PBG4)
- 17" HD G4 iMac
- SuperDrive eMac
- Redesigned PowerBook G4 that fixes some of the larger flaws, adds a SuperDrive, along with a hefty price drop
- Apple hybrid digital still and video camera
- New Apple wireless webpad/iPad touchscreen display
- Apple PDA
- Steve Jobs in a hot gay porno

Hopefully they'll release the G5 by then.
Except for reading AI , I'll use it for Java programming (now that Eclipse (a very nice Java IDE) is being ported to MacOS X), digital photo / video editing, surfing etc.
I'll buy probably no matter what Steve presents in NY as long as it has a new MoBo. I just can't wait any longer...

I hope you're patient!
the question is gonna be to max out with the top of the line system, or pick up a fairly inexpensive stop gap.... i can get about $900 for my current system, say $700 by then... so i'd be willing to trade up for the short term...
what do i wanna see? ghz, whatever 1.2-1.4 in their wherever, its fine, duals across the board would be a pipe dream, biggest thing is the mobo tho... i want true ddr, none of this 1gbps restriction.... a new case would be nice too, but thats cosmetic... after fx is just unbelievably slow, and i cant afford an ice, so whatever comes through, i gotta get...
these days the "faster" runs around $2300, if you've got that much, drop the extra $700 or so for the better video card, ram, extra processor, higher clock, etc...
if price is an issue, go for the fast, it'll retain its value a lot better, and you won't feel so bad about replacing it too soon. my sister got a "faster" quicksilver after mwny last year, with what she paid for it, she's gonna be using it for a looong time, and she doesnt need the superdrive or the extra mhz... whereas $1599 for the good system? thats definitely worth it.... unless you have a practical purpose for the superdrive... i mean, im gonna be in school another few years, if i absolutely have to burn a dvd, ill go to a lab and do it...
i have always completely maxxed out whatever hardware i've been given, even doing stuff with sgi's i had to cluster 10 of em to render my stuff, so im all about understanding the need for speed.... just think about the performance difference historically between "fast" and "faster" unless theirs something major like the "yikes!" vs. "sawtooth" thing
List of stuff to upgrade, in probably order that I will:
40GB western digital to replace 4GB dead Maxtor. Put Mandrake Linux on my 20GB and Mac OS X on 40GB.
750MHz G4 upgrade from PowerLogix
GeForce 4 MX
Extra 256MB of RAM.

<strong>I may buy if the next powermac has DDR (not a hacked DDR system as described by JYD and others) and the speed is around 1.4GHz (duals) and the price is lower than the current dual GHz macs.
Otherwise, I'm waiting for the G5.

You mean you will wait for a new CPU, whether it be a G4 or next-gen.
Remember, DDR266 runs at 2133MBps. The G4 uses 1066MBps. AGP uses 1066MBps. Combine that with DMA from your ethernet controller, and it doesn't seem so wasted anymore.

Of course...replacement for the broken ones doesn't count

Be sad for the people who have to buy now, and will say "Doh!" when the next-gen is released

If Steve gets his head out of his ass at MWNY and gives us something less antiquated in those two respects, then I might buy.
Ideal would be something along the lines of: 2x1400MHz or more, real DDR mainboard, with FireWire 2 and all the new stuff that makes it into the design and a nice metallic case that can handle at least 2x 5.25" bays. Also a looped PSU would be nice to have again. Sound-in ports are most likely a given.

<strong> <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> I'm looking to MWNY to give me hope for 3D on the Mac. I'm in the market for a new computer; I also happen to be a student of the 3D arts. At the moment, I'm considering doing that which up 'till a week ago I considered unthinkable: switching back to PC ( <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" /> ). If I don't hear any good news from A|W or Apple at MWNY, I may be forced to go PC (reluctantly, though). It's a damn shame, but I may have no choice.</strong><hr></blockquote>
If you're a student of the 3D arts, Apple's recent aquisitions should very likely convince you to continue using Macs:
