Getting into the MVNO business would have been ill-advised. It's a low margin, zero-growth, dog of a business best left to useless companies like Virgin and no-name start-ups.
Virgin Mobile USA and Boost Mobile are both owned by Sprint. They aren't MVNOs, they're a Sprint brand. In fact, those two are where most of Sprint's growth comes from.
All they really have to do is respond to the bullshit rather than ignore it. When some analyst comes out with a report ‘confirming’ the existence of, say, a new Apple TV, Apple should just release a statement like the one it just did about MVNO. Tell the world that that analyst has been sniffing model airplane glue and is unqualified to make such a claim.
Only problem is once they start doing that then anytime they don't comment people will assume that rumor is true. In this case though I get it. Apple doesn't want to upset the carrier relationships they have.
Everyone else needs competition, but not Google. You never Google fans complain about the lack of competition in search engines or maps.
Everyone should be fearful of what's happening to Twitter. The company is a mess right now and ripe for acquisition. The CW is Google will snap them up. God help us all if they do.
The point was that the fact that Google has entered those markets may have fed the rumor, regardless of whether or not it would be good for Apple.
You may be right about that.
Although, I honestly cannot think of a single instance in which Apple has entered even a single domain in which it appears to have said, "Google is in, or is thinking of getting into, that business, so I must."

No shit. If Apple were to get into the "carrier" end of their system, I'd imagine they'd do it a more innovative way; as in, say, pursue the original vision of having their devices operate on a nationwide wifi network. Or something. Whatever, I know I'll get harangued about that because infrastructure, square miles, Billions uv dollerz and all that, I get it. Whatever the case, I highly doubt they're going to jump into the MVNO cesspool.

Speculators may make assumptions as Apple and Google compete in the area Apple makes the majority of its profits (iPhone). Extrapolate to the areas in which Apple has not entered (cars, wireless, fiber, robotics, etc.)...

Yeah, like it's even a remotely serious or material business for Apple.

That's not what you said. That would be a typical reaction tho from some folks who hear an answer that, while the truth, isn't what they want to hear. Not pinning that on you of course.

BTW, did you notice the other day that Google set up a subsidiary, Google Auto LLC? Could be for liability reasons or for some bigger project, perhaps building/partnering on an actual car of some sort. AFAIK they haven't discussed it.

I'd rather be sending my money to Apple Wireless than AT&T. Oh, well.
You’d still be sending your money to at&t, just indirectly.

I don't normally cite Wikipedia, except when it is too obvious: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgin_Mobile
Sure but plenty of other sites jumped on it. So now they all have egg on their faces.

A lie repeated is a lie amplified. In time, the source is forgotten and the echoed lie becomes "consensus on the web."
