1) This will read to many here as being a desperate move, but it's also a move a company that is certain about their product might offer.
2) it's not confidence then they have absolutely nothing to lose by doing this. What's the worst that could happen? Not a single trial customer switches to Samsung, so they're back to square one, but now they have a list of names and contact info with implicit permission to solicit you again in the future. I don't see a downside. It's pure win-win for them.
Not just Samsung have a list of names, but also Google.
Google is sure to be with Samsung on this.
After all Google has been losing android spy information when the user choses Apple's iPhone.
I think this is a very smart move as they are targeting the "swing-voters" and they will get a lot of detailed market research data on what factors would make them swing. I would imagine that the T&C's would include having to answer some sort of experience follow-up.
As others have noted it is pretty much paid for due to the excess inventory on hand and is much more effective use of a portion of their $$$B advertising budget.
If they are so confident that their play will create loyal Samsungites then they should combine this with a iPhone trade-in offer and a concierge service like the Genius bar to ensure a smooth migration of content and apps. Will that be cost-effective? No way, but Samsung is not the first company to buy marketshare.
It is desperate and cleaver at the same time. Why? Well how do you continue to ship more units than your competitors but not sell many more, while at the same time not swamping the market with unsold products. This is how. If they get broken I assume the 'consumer' pays and viola no more surpluses.
And for my next trick the mighty Samdini will make all their mobile profits vanish!
This would make sense if Samsung had a niche, not widely known and superior product.
Instead anyone that has any chance of switching to another smart phone has likely had ample opportunity to pour over the samsung offerings, amongst the great many other options available.
Not just Samsung have a list of names, but also Google.

The Hippocratic here is unbelievable. I love how you seem to dislike Google and Samsung collecting your data - which I'm not disputing - but you seem to think that Apple harvesting your data is A-OK. Apple has proven numerous times that they are systematically collecting data and sharing it with the NSA. I don't deny the fact that Google and Samsung do it as well, but don't pretend that Apple somehow immune and playing the good guy in this.
If you're against your "spy information" as you put it being harvested, you shouldn't have a smartphone - not from google, Samsung or Apple, and you certainly shouldn't praise a company for not doing it when they very much are at the forefront of it.
Do not underestimate the power of "not completely honest" marketing. We have seen how IDC, Strategy Analytics, Gartner and other agencies have manipulated data to make it look like Samsung is doing well then three to six months later the truth is revealed. After the truth is revealed, the agencies find more data to manipulate.
During the next three weeks, look for articles claiming Samsung has managed to sway iPhone users to not only test drive, but to actually switch to a Samsung smartphone. Also look for articles that...
Provide "detailed" comparisons of how much better the new Samsung phones are to nearly year old iPhones.
Promote how Samsung has managed to be innovative with the new phones.
Promote how great Samsung Pay is compared to Apple Pay without announcing all of the banks, credit unions, etc. that actually, or will, support Samsung Pay.
Claim how to up its game with the new iPhones to stay ahead of the new Samsung phones.
Forget the last year that Apple iPhones easily trounced Samsung phones.
Forget how Apple's strategy forced Samsung to repeatedly change its strategy every quarter of the last year.
You get the picture. I wrote three weeks because that is the window of opportunity Samsung has before the next iPhone is announced.
Look for the articles to be widely propagated by... Fortune, Bloomberg, Reuters, MarketWatch, Yahoo! News, The Verge, Engadget, CNBC, WSJ, NYT, San Francisco Chronicle and LA Times (2-3 days after the others), USA Today and FT.
When the new iPhones are announced... look for articles stating how smart Samsung was to get its phones out before Apple to give Apple customers time to "clearly" see how much better the Samsung phones are compared to Apple's iPhones.
When earnings are announced in October 2015 and January 2016, look for a repeat of last year's announcements for both Apple and Samsung. " src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />
Why in a world I want to waste my time ? If I liked and wanted to use any android phone including Samsung phone than I would have bought it? Desperate efforts by Samsung to try to latch happy iphone users to lure to switch before they upgrading to iPhone 6S

I'm curious. It says activated... So is it going to be on a plan paid for by them? I guess the "worth" part would be just tether your iPhone to it and go nuts with Netflix! Lol. Then ship it back. Ehhhhh didn't work. LAME. I did not see anything in the terms and conditions about being responsible for data charges. Or that it would be added to my plan etc etc.

Hahahahaha.
I wanna see those numbers when this is over.

Wow, Yet another move from Apple's playbook! This is how I got my first Mac, and I've never gone back. (Yikes, did I just give away my age?!)
No thanks, I think I'll stick with the real thing rather than an imitation.

I should do the trial, take a bunch of pics of one of my dog's piles, and then send it back. Think they'll get the hint?
Too small of a pond.

The new iPhones are almost here and this is pure desperation.
