Isn't the real headline here "Google will help sell more iPhones"?!

    Very true, and I agree.

The sub-heading should be, "Google desperate to keep it's nose up your ass 24/7."

Considering you purchased the 38mm, you may want check the sizes before buying. Most Android watches are large, even relative to the 42mm model.

It's funny how we still use anachronistic terms like "watch" when describing wearable wrist computers.

so an android watch gives users the ability to use an iOS device or an Android device. choice is good for the consumer. its nice to not have to own a specific brand phone because of your watch.

Ultimately, this will just show in the long run how good the ? Watch actually is compared to other smart watches. And choice is never a bad thing. Anyone preferring a round smart watch for their iPhone now has their wish granted. Hopefully the ? Watch still dominates the smart watch market after this.

I thought about that when apple named it a "watch" at the time because showing the time is such a small part of what the device does for the user. I finally decided it was a strategic naming so Apple could better smooze the fashion industry and set their product apart from the Android crowd from the get-go.

Doing so is more of a long term strategy and should pay off — from the looks of it, the "me too" competitors aren't even going to pretend to be in the fashion business what with their plated gold and clunky wrist bands...

There's obviously technical reasons for the black border so I wouldn't really call it a waste of space. Most of the Android Wear watches are really large because they're using hardware to cover up the bezel. And I've seen plenty of Android Wear screen shots that seem like a waste of space....like a text message where half the screen contains a photo of the person who sent you the text.

Could not agree more. The square shape is undoubtedly the best use of space for a smart watch. It just so happens that the ? Watch is also absolutely gorgeous.

While I still prefer the Apple Watch in terms of looks and functionality, I think it's pretty neat they're supporting iOS. I guess it might help them get a few more sales from certain people.

Personally, one of my main "wish list" items for a future Apple Watch (with improved batter & power mgmt) is to have a setting which would allow the user to enable an always on (low power) "watch face".  The customizable watch faces are an enjoyable part of the device (and sure to expand over time), and you would like to be able to display those.  The key here is on implementation - it can't just be an always on screen, which would have draw backs.  Basically, you only want the watch face to show in an always on mode, rather than notifications as they come in, or the home screen if that is last place left, or that last application, etc.  In other words, have a low-power mode watch face displayed, but when you raise your wrist to activate, it goes to the location per the setting (which could be watch face but with proper brightness, last application, or showing that notification).

This feature should be easily enabled / disabled with either a gesture or easily accessible setting.  For example, when in a darkened environment and you don't want anything displayed.

So if I'm an iPhone owner, the reason I'd want an Android watch would be.... None!

See, you're thinking like a considerate person. What would spoil the joy of owning an ?watch is witnessing assholes keeping their "always on" display showing all the time. "Look at meeee! I have an ?watch!"

The flat tire is f**king annoying as hell, but the huge black border of wasted space around the physical display on my Apple Watch Sport is nearly as annoying stylistically IMHO.

    Never even noticed it...

No, I think it's more likely "Google actually tries to sell some Android watches off the back of the iPhone's success"

What are you talking about.  I barely even notice it because the background is black.   The flat tire thing on the other hand......

I'm sorry but this is just bad. And it would look comically huge on anyone that had a small wrist. And what's up with the ragged text near the edge of the display. Shouldn't there be some kind of border or padding that prevents the text from butting right up to the edge?

OMG, what a smart way for Google to install their advertisers  malware.

I suspect Google will underprice Apple's watches.

Google should feel obligated to give the user a price break for providing info to Google's advertisers !  <img class=" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

Google doesn't make any smartwatches and doesn't set prices for them.
