Fair enough but my point wasn't specifically controllers.  The more competition you have, the better prices are... for games, for controllers, for cases, for everything.  Third parties can make cases for very cheap, and thus sell them very cheap.  Controllers obviously cost much more to manufacture than cases, quality ones anyway.  Its absurd to think that everything should be $5.  But I'd have much more confidence in fair prices existing in a system such as an App Store, with thousands of competitors making games, than I would with Sony and the prices they charge for games.

Hardcore gaming will live on but it won't be mainstream.  Right now mainstream gaming is Xbox/PS.  In a few years mainstream gaming will be AppleTV.

The pattern has been set with portable gaming.  A decade ago mainstream portable gaming was Gameboy. Not anymore.  Its clearly iOS/Android.  Why?

    1. Games are reasonabily priced on mobile platforms.  $40 Gameboy games are ridiculously expensive.

    2. iOS/Android devices do way more than just games.  Gameboy just plays games.

But those 2 facts don't stop the most hardcore gamers from buying Gameboy/PS Vita.  But it did stop tens of millions of casual gamers from buying a stand alone portable gaming device.  I see the same thing happenning for home gaming.

But even the hardcore base of Gameboy/PS Vita players is rotting.  Because of lack of sales less and less developers are making Gameboy/Vita games.

It will take several years but AppleTV will take out 30-40% of the market from Xbox/PS.  Sony/MSFT can only do 2 moves:

    1. Lower the price of games/systems.

    2. Make the Xbox/PS full featured entertainment boxes

Both options will attract more casual gamers but would HURT hard core gamers.  Hard core gamers could care less about their Xbox turning on their lights.  And lower the price and adding non-gaming features would hurt the investment in games.

    Pretty dire situation for Xbox/PS.

The choice is simple.  Does Xbox/PS make radical changes to their business plan to retain and attract casual gamers?  Or they risk losing a ton of casual gamers and stay the course to entrench the hardcore gamers?  Such a tough choice that I have no idea what they should do.  This is the very definition of disruption.  When a company is forced into decisions they would rather not make.

If you really look at both consoles, they are full featured entertainment boxes. You can rent/buy movies, music, apps, etc just like you can with an Apple TV.

Even casual gamers care about FPS and graphics. No way Apple TV games could even come close to matching a game such as the Last of Us. I don't see Apple TV taking away sales from Xbox One or PS4.

Sure sign a company is scared of Apple:  They make spoofs.

IMO this is the biggest evidence that the AppleTV will disrupt gaming.  Did Sony do this when the Shield gaming platform come out?  hell no.

Sony spends a ton of $$$ on research and probabily knew an AppleTV with gaming feature would be a huge threat.

It does seem that companies sure jump on the defensive when Apple is about to make an announcement. Considering Apple didn't call out anybody with their announcement Sony seems nervous, very nervous.

Could it actually be a collaboration with Apple and not a shot at them? Sony has expressed interest in bringing its Playstation Now streaming service to other companies platforms (i.e. Samsung Smart TVs already). Maybe they will be announcing a Plsystation Now App available for download in the new Apple TV App Store?
I'm don't really think this is likely, but would be a neat idea if the AppleTV incorporated PS Vita TV capabilities.

I doubt many casual gamers buy the PS4 even now.  An Apple TV for $149 that gets people play casual games could well be a "gateway drug" for people buying a serious gaming platform like PS4.

I'm a casual gamer and I bought a PS4. Mobile games, like what we probably will see on Apple TV, don't come close to the games you can play on consoles.

What does money in the bank have anything to do with bankruptcy or the future of the company? When you still have payroll and no products that anyone wants to buy...what good is money in the bank? It doesn't last forever.

That would be great. I considered getting PS Vita TV for our second TV so my son can stream games from his PS4 when we are watching TV. But the price was high for just that use case.

You are terrible at shopping. You don't need to buy an additional controller and games can be bought either in a bundle or off the online store for much less than $50.

There are bundles for less than $400 that include a game, and a far more capable gaming machine than an AppleTV, current or imminent.

Most casual gamers won't be hunting down deals.

And most casual gamers want to play MULTI player games, so an additional controller is a MUST.

So it still is about $500 just to start playing.  That is a MASSIVE investment for a casual gamer.

But the AppleTV is only $149.  And its very easy for a casual gamer to justify it cause it does a ton of other things like stream Netflix.

Multi player games don't mean that you need someone sitting next to you. You could play with someone in another state, or another country. Friends can play in the luxury of their own homes, and communicate via a headset.

That's what most people do. They aren't playing multiplayer games with a friend sitting next to them. I've had my PS4 since release and have yet to buy an extra controller. When I play with friends, it's always using the mic that came with the PS4.

I always had generally positive feelings about Sony, from my fifth birthday when my dad gave me a Sony clock/radio until several years ago I got a PS3. I was an early adopter of the PS3, so it cost $600, and at a certain point they started periodically forcing me to get software "updates." They block you from using the device until you've downloaded and installed the latest software, and one of the early updates permanently filled the home screen with advertising which I now have to see every time I boot the thing up--no way to disable. I come home from work tired and barely have enough time to stream a movie, then boot the thing up and find out that I would have to sit through another 15-20 minute update cycle before I would be allowed to watch anything. Really annoying. I also bought one for a friend before this all started happening, and she has been really frustrated by this too. It doesn't happen as often as it used to, maybe just because they're now focused on pissing off the PS4 users and they've forgotten about us.

Also, it died after less than two years, and cost about $160 to repair.

Steam has been far more disruptive to gaming than the Apple TV will be, at least for a very long time.  The 'hard core' gamer set exists almost entirely in Windows PCs running Steam, and the consoles are for the broader audience who wants the A titles on a cheaper device and don't mind not having the crazy power of a PC.  Maybe Apple can steal some of the console market, but they will not get any of the hard core gamers with the (still rumored) new Apple TV.  Casual games, in my experience, are a bit of an afterthought on rather half baked devices.  Not one of the casual game devices has been successful since the Wii, and that was far less casual than an Ouya or PS TV.  Apple does have a strong library of iOS games, but none of those are strong enough to compete with PC gaming, and few can keep up with XBone or PS4.  Casual gaming works on portable devices, but for sitting down and playing for hours...it's all about horsepower and content.  Playing Angry Birds, for example, on a big screen for more than 15 minutes...is lame.  Sony and Microsoft are fiercely competitive in this space and they have pretty much taken down the once mighty Nintendo, and more casual, family friendly games were pretty much entirely Nintendo's business.  Good luck, Apple.

Also, no way in hell a Apple TV will give the same performance as a console much less than a PC gaming rig. Nobody is disrupting gaming.

Well, if instead of saying something vague such as "nobody is disrupting gaming", which I certainly agree with, we say "the AppleTV cannot possibly disrupt the gaming revenue stream", then I have to disagree.  I've known plenty of casual gamers who purchased Xboxes or PS4s simply because when they went looking for gaming solutions on their television, these were what they heard most about.  In other words, I think a significant fraction of people that buy such systems are not hard core gamers to begin with.  Another alternative for such people could certainly put a dent in sales.

It should think you have the same POV of Apple when it sells an iPhone 6 for $650 and the 6 Plus for $750 with only 16GB of storage...

Though this is a ripoff of Apple, I can't get all that angry about Sony - it's the goobers (I'm being extremely polite) at Sungscam whom I despise.

Over the past couple of years, I've talked two families in my extended family out of buying Sungscam washer / dryer sets. It feels great to deprive them of revenue.

All song will do is Copy Apple.

They're the Samdung of the gaming industry.

They stole EVERYTHING from Nintendo, even attempting to publish Nintendo knock off games.

OK, I trust your opinion, because I don't follow gaming...at all.

Time to talk family and friends out of buying Sony, too.

    Thanks for the info.

I wouldn't mind the $50 (actually $60) games if they didn't also require another $40 in DLC. The prices for controllers are ridiculous though.
