I agree. It makes sense to have a new "unique to the casing design color," at least with the 'S' model, to help drive sales of this status symbol. I bet a lot of people don't care for gold or rose gold but bought it anyway because it's unique. It will likely hold its original value a little better than the others, too.

And this will be true for other countries as well but China is the big status symbol capital of them all.

There's also the small population that will upgrade only for the color.

I'm running a poll over on the verge and while it is only at 40-50 votes so far I would say space grey and 64gig are ruling it.

rose gold is doing quite respectable trade along with gold and silver - though silver is the least - I think Apple dropped the ball on going from white to silver.

It might be more than just a subjective choice, but how we interrupt the colors could be highly subjective. I'm personally not a fan of gold color for fashion, and while there are probably some cultural aspects to that, it could also be in how the cones in my eyes or parts of my brain that interrupt the data from the cones registers colors with a golden hue.

What makes it more ridiculous is the iPhone became the most profitable handset — not just smartphone — in the world in around a year or so after being on the market and despite that it's just continued to excel. Tim showed how iPhone sales in China, Apple's 2nd largest market after the US, are through the roof, which is absolutely remarkable.

You probably don't read chinese, but in China online store, all iPhone are still available to buy, including the Rose Gold. In HK it's only sold out because they want to make a profit and sell it across the border - they may be in for a nasty surprise when there are no buyers and stuck with iPhone 6s.

I would have expected that, but the registered users of "The Verge" do not (thanks to whatever higher being) really represent society at large. We would all be swinging Windows Phones then.

I ordered silver again myself, but I agree, especially the backside of all models after the 4S leaves a lot to be desired. Since the 6(s) Plus is too slippery for me to hold it securely, I use it with an Apple case anyhow, so I do not mind... all I want is a white front, and gold is not my thing.

Like in past years, I found the Apple Store App to be a far more efficient and dependable way to order the new iPhone when it first comes online. I also decided to downsize from the 6 Plus to the 4.7" iPhone 6s because the new Plus clearly weighs more than the old one which was heavy and bulky enough. This article may help some of you decide:

Good luck whatever model you choose.

Beautiful color. When I first heard the rumor it just made sense.

This color is also being purchased to differentiate between models and in China the iPhone is a status symbol. Showing you have the latest model is part of that.

Genius.
that's what I've been saying about the new color to drive sales especially in Asia. Most people in Asia use probably 10-15% iPhone capabilities such as texts, video and social networking and care less about apps. 16GB would be gone first over there. I lived in Asia before and I know. People are willing to spend 6-mo salary on an iPhone. It's all about status symbol. You can get a lot of attentions from people or girls with your latest iPhone and your cool ride while you are completely broke.

Well, they did not really succeed. Apple's stock did not drop more than all stocks overall. And clever investors know that the China situation has no effect on the Chinese people who can afford iPhones, any crisis is always paid for by the unwashed masses.

Of course the "S" models will boost sales, since the 4S the "S" years have always increased the user base faster, and there are much more people due for renewal than last year. And, with Samsung asking identical prices now (for remotely similar phones) and Android security horror stories all over the media daily... a child could predict how this will go. As always, this was a nice opportunity to buy more stock. I did.
that's exactly what I was laughing at these idiots on Bloomberg yesterday about their analysis on Apple with weak China and dollar appreciation. I said to my wife that these guys ain't know shit about Asian consumers. I said Apple would sell out Rose Gold phone in a few hours and every single new iPhone over the weekend. Guess what they beat my estimation too. I myself got 2 orders of Rose Gold 6S and 6S+ 64GB for friends in Vietnam and it'll cost over $1300 for 6S+ Rose Gold over there now.

Initially was like "Rose Gold sounds cool" but the pictures ranged from pink to reddish, and without seeing that color in person I wasn't really fond of buying that blind if was closer to pale pink. The color I prefer things is either Black, Grey/Silver or Red-Burgundy. Not fond of "gold" items since they attract attention.

People who are color-blind probably different things:
eg: Rose Gold looks like pale gold to red or green blindness, but pink to blue blindness.
http://www.color-blindness.com/coblis-color-blindness-simulator/ use a stock image of the iPhone 6S like this http://newstactics.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/iPhone-6S.jpg

The color sounds awful to me. Like anodized metallic salmon. I used to own a 'champagne' colored car. It was horrible. But that's just me - color is a subjective choice and I'll always respect other's choice. I might shake my head quietly. I mean, I used to drive a metallic beige car!

Salmon has more orange. What Apple calls regular "gold" is what hi-if manufacturers of the early 90s called "champagne".

It should be 18 k marketing

Rose gold exist since a long time for music instrument, even if it's uncommon

There is also rose copper, but i's not exactly the same color

Now, more and more watch are in rose gold (but real gold here and not the Apple imitation) Rose gold is fashion in the watch industry.

The special I watch  edition is rose gold (real one) . So the I phone rose gold, has the same color.

I owned a Lambretta Scooter in the 1960s and painted it a colour called 'Polychromatic Copper Pink' which was just very slightly darker than Apple's Rose Gold.

Although pink is normally regarded as a feminine colour%u2014the Rose Gold Apple Watch with Rose Grey strap only comes in 38mm size%u2014I'd be happy with the Rose Gold.
The rose gold versions have been the first to slip, suggesting that consumers are responding well to Apple's new option
Or suggesting that those were the ones in shortest supply..

Using this logic you would have concluded that the $15k Watch Edition was the most popular model because it had the longest lead times.

Because the metallic pink color looks like rose gold. If you're unfamiliar with the term, look it up.

Yes only Apple know the stock in various colors and various memory amount.

That's said, I have the feeling, that the rose gold , may be popular.

I have ordered one 6 S in 128 GB in this tone, to replace my defective 4S ( I can only use it, like an I pod: can't phone anymore)

Yes, you are right, it's not just a colour but an actual alloy. They make it by mixing copper with the gold. Well you learn something new every day.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colored_gold#Rose.2C_red.2C_and_pink_gold

First, obviously it's not actual rose gold any more than space grey comes from space. That's only how they named the color. It's 7000-series aluminum anodized in a rose gold color.

Second, actual rose gold is not made from "mixing" copper and gold. The gold used in a watch, for example, needs to be hard enough to withstand normal wear and tear and pure, 24k gold is too soft for that. When you see 18k or 14k, that is a gold alloy, with the gold molecularly bonded with one or more other elements giving it more strength and hardness. The choice of other elements used in the alloy determines its properties, including color. A gold alloy using copper gives it a pink hue, hence the name, rose gold, which is commonly used in jewelry.

They could have just named this the pink iPhone, but that would sound cheap. Instead they gave it a name that evokes the gold used in the expensive Watch Edition and fine jewelry. It's the same reason car manufacturers use the name "champagne" instead of "metallic beige".

Not astonished that the "new" color sells like crazy, but a bit astonished that the Plus version is again having worse availability (or higher demand) than Apple expected (or can produce). They also seem to be a bit short on 128 GB models for both models / all colors. I would understand if the Plus is harder to produce (for whatever reason), but making enough 128 GB models should not be an issue? Do they really think people with data allowances around 200 MB and 1 GB (the majority of affordable contracts in most countries) will all buy the 16 GB models and stream everything? Puzzles me a bit.

Apple only has so much manufacturing capacity at launch time. I doubt it's any different making an iPhone in different colors or with different amounts of flash memory, but they have to decide how many to make of each version, within the overall manufacturing limits. Naturally they will opt to make more of the most popular versions, and that means the mid-tier 64gb model in silver or grey. That's likely the main reason why the others sell out so quickly.
