But wouldn't that just cannibalize the iPad Pro? That's something you're so concerned with when it copipped iPhone.
Huh? I never worried about iPhone6 canibalzing iPhone6+. The iPad Pro will still have one or two features that the Air won't. But Pencil should NOT be one of those features.
You did repeatedly say that Apple would never keep the iPhone 6/6+ because it would cannibalize sales of the iPhone 6s/6s+.
I have an Air 2 which I love.
And Air 3 with new speaker system probably would nt sway me but if it haad Pencil support, I would maybe be intereted then.
Sort of hope yes and no.
Crazy huh?

Friken Apple better give us pencil support for iPad Air3. If not it would be another demostration of how ass backwards Tim Cook is running the company.
You're seriously overvaluing the Pencil. It is a small subset of an even smaller subset of possible users.
You knew nothing about the iPad Pro or the Pencil a year ago. Suddenly these are the must have features for the 9.7" form factor?
Yes they are for him. He knows about the Pencil now. I'd bet money it'll get Pencil support. If Apple doesn't give it Pencil support it'll be to make the Pro seem artificially more attractive to push buyers to higher price points. This thinking is killing Apple. And it has Schiller written all over it. Apple are quite simply too greedy. I believe it's tarnishing their brand. €114 to cover the front and rear of an iPad mini 4? Schiller is out of his gourd. Personally I think even the iPad mini 5 should get Pencil support and going forward iPads should add 3D Touch too. The idea is to make all these devices attractive, not just to always be only concerned about pushing people to higher price points which ends up crippling smaller devices. That's not how you make the best devices. That's short term vision stuff.
You might consider that Apple looks at the use cases when deciding which devices get which expensive technology guts. If only 10% of iPad owners would ever make use of the Pencil, then why add it to all iPads, or even to the majority? Nope, you'd be better off considering the actual tasks the Pencil would be used for (creative, artistic, engineering, etc) and then offer that support in an iPad form factor best suited to those use cases, which I would argue would be a larger display iPad. Which is just what we've seen Apple do, thus far. So don't be surprised if Apple doesn't add Pencil support to the smaller form factors. And it wouldn't be because they are specifically trying to upsell people, but rather that thet wish to offer the best possible experience to that segment of the market who would use the Pencil capability.
Apple would not have much to lose by including pencil in the iPad Air 3. They could do so and still keep margins close to what they would make on the pro model.
The iPad pro is a very nice machine. I have essentially stopped using my MacBook Air all together. The battery life is far superior to the MacBook machines, the performance is outstanding, the sound is far better, and the iPad never heats up.
While I would be willing to purchase an iPAd Air 3, I will wait until late 2016 for the A10X CPU.

I've virtually stopped using my 2010 MacBook Air, in favor of my iPad Air 2. That didn't happen initially; I bought my iPad Air 2 about a year ago and only gradually shifted my time away from the MacBook Air, to the point where today I sit down in front of the MacBook maybe twice a week for some task or other. I'm sure I'll do my taxes on it, but can't think of any other specific tasks For which I'd always choose it over my iPad. No iPad Pro required in my case.
I was saying that Apple is not afraid that the 6 (smaller phone) would canibalzie the 6+ (larger phone)
They should not be afraid that the iPad Air3 (smaller tablet) would canibalize the iPad Pro if both can use the pencil.
The only reason the Air3 won't have pencil support is because Apple wants people to spend more to get the Pro. That would be stupid and ass backwards IMO.
And yet you want Apple to kill their iPhone 7 after one year because a cheaper iPhone 7 would cannibalize the 7S. I don't see how this is any different. But I do think the Pencil is phenomenal technology and I hope it does come to more products outside of iPad Pro. But I also hope WWDC brings software changes specific to iPad Pro that make it more than just a bigger screen.

How is it that we remember better the things you've said? You swore up and down that Apple would eliminate the iPhone 6/6+ so they wouldn't compete with their s model counterparts.
Now since when is getting people to spend more a bad idea in your eyes? Ohhh because it's something YOU want. According to you it's a great idea for Apple to keep the 16GB iPhone model because it gets people to spend more to get the 64GB model, but since you want the pencil but don't want to pay for an iPad Pro plus the $99, the idea is bad. How many times does @rogifan_old has to say "it's all about the upsell"?

You should perhaps invest in one of the retina Macbook Pros. Whenever I want to do things other than light gaming and light websurfing I put my Air 2 away and go for my rMBP.

All excellent points. One thing I would add is that, even though the specific use cases you mentioned would be better suited to an iPad Pro, one thing an iPad Air + Pencil combo would be great for, is if someone's looking for very mobile note taking device.

That may not be as simple as that. There may be engineering constraints which would compromise the weight and thickness as well as CPU use during tracking with high resolution, which would then require a larger battery etc... The reason behind iPad Pro's larger screen is not to provide a larger view to get cheers and applauses, all such constraints together lead to a bigger device.

I believe it will. Otherwise, there's no reason for iPad owners to upgrade.

With or without Apple Pencil support on iPad Air, my next iPad will still likely be 2nd gen. iPad Pro. I love the size.

Hint: 99% of the time a car moves forward, not backward, so why add reverse gears?
